CL Comment: Dynamo Kiev v Inter - Late Goals, Lost Bets, Sheva's Love & Lucio's Chest

I should have known this was going to happen. Earlier today I was explaining to my boss why Manchester United are the most disliked team in England. One of the key reasons dated back to the end of the 1992-93 season where Manchester United were chasing their first league championship for more than 25 years.

They were showing signs of 'bottling it' in the run-in, as they had done the year before when Leeds beat them to the line, and were trailing 1-0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday in a match where they looked destined to throw away the title. Then the referee would play eight million minutes of stoppage time, defender Steve Bruce would score twice, United would win, and Alex Ferguson and his assistant Brian Kidd would run onto the pitch like madmen as they knew the Premier League was now theirs.

Usually when I tell these unusual stories, they always find some way of immediately repeating themselves. It's happened too many times before, believe me.

And it happened tonight as Inter rose from the dead against Dynamo Kiev, just like United 16 years ago, to score twice in the last four minutes. The manner of the victory, when everything seemed lost, and after Inter had squandered chance after chance in the second half, highlighted the never-say-die attitude of the Nerazzurri.

Manchester United are so hated in England partly because they have scored so many late goals over the years (think Barcelona '99 v Bayern Munich for the ultimate example). Haters call it luck, but realists will acknowledge it is the sign of a team with great spirit - even if Inter's win did arrive with considerable help from a dodgy Dynamo Kiev goalkeeper.

Wesley won it for Inter at the death

Having seemed on the verge of a Champions League exit, when you consider Inter's next game is a trip to Camp Nou to play champions Barcelona, the incredible late show has catapulted the Beneamata from bottom to top of Group F. Now, regardless of what happens in Spain, Inter know that if they win their final clash at home to Rubin Kazan they will qualify for the knockouts.

Here are a few other things we learned tonight:

  • Andriy Shevchenko loves playing against Inter. This was the 15th goal of his career against the Nerazzurri. The first was almost exactly 10 years ago during the Milan derby.
  • Inter ended 13 months without a win in Europe. It had been eight games since they had tasted victory against Anorthosis Famagusta in October 2008.
  • Oleksandr Shovkovskiy won't have much trouble taking back his goalkeeper jersey once he is fit again. His deputee Stanyslav Bohush was to blame for both Inter goals.
  • Wesley Sneijder will definitely be making Goal.com CL Team of the Round after a mesmerising second half performance.
  • Samuel Eto'o misses chances. Yes, he is world class and is prolific but he is not super-clinical.
  • Inter's 4-2-1-3 formation in the second half was as entertaining as it was effective. 'Mour' please Jose.
  • Goal.com's Ewan Macdonald will be regretting betting £30 on a draw after Shevchenko scored. A Scotsman throwing his money away?!
  • Lucio needs to tone up his chest.
