US to train in Pretoria at World Cup

  • Print

CHICAGO (AP)—The United States will train for the World Cup in South Africa at Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria, the same base it used during last year’s successful run at the Confederations Cup.

The U.S. Soccer Federation made the announcement Monday after the governing body of Italian soccer announced the Azzurri will train at Southdowns College in Irene. The U.S. team will be staying nearby at the Irene Country Lodge and had also had considered Smithdowns College as its training site.

South America Rules , El numero # 1 BABY.
The European have 16 participants country spaces in Word Cup . Are they afraid of the others confederations that they may wind more Word Cups.?
I think that is unfair for the others confederacions becouse the Europeans are no fair to the rest of the world , the european countrys are very small and if they want to play in the Word Cup of Football Soccer they should do like South America , Central America , Africa , and Asia etc etc and only send the best 4 or 5 of the region to the world Cup and no like the Europeans that they are 80% to 20% to win a cup versus the others Confederations or the Eruopeans forget that South America Paten the World Cup .What is
going on ? The Europeans should share more spaces to the world cup with the others Confederations or " ARE THEY AFRAID?
Look where the Best Football / Soccer players are made, ARGENTINA , BRASIL , URUGUAY , PARAGUAY = SOUTH AMERICA + THE BEST TRAINERS AND COACHS
or no Look Estudiantes de la Plata a 30 million Dollars club a players making club VS Barselona a buying club a 1.000 millions dollars a 1 to 2 a win for Barselona I like Barselona but if Messi wasn't in that club the coach and his team woudn't won the Cup . I think the referee shoulded red car Messi when he when with his shoe up and fould the player from Estudiantes and the History woulde be another one.

The South American Football Confederation (Spanish: Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol; Portuguese: Confederação Sul-Americana de Futebol), known by the acronym CONMEBOL or CSF, is the governing body of football (soccer) in most of South America and is one of FIFA's six continental confederations.

CONMEBOL was founded in 1916 under the initiative of Uruguayan Héctor Rivadavia Gómez, but approved by the football associations of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay. Over the years, the other football associations in South America joined, with the last being Venezuela in 1952. Guyana, Suriname, and the French overseas department of French Guiana, while geographically in South America, are not part of CONMEBOL. These three territories are part of CONCACAF, mainly due to historical, cultural, and sporting reasons. At ten member nations, CONMEBOL is the smallest FIFA confederation.

CONMEBOL is one of the two dominant confederations in FIFA, along with UEFA. CONMEBOL teams have won nine of the eighteen FIFA World Cup tournaments, while only having hosted the tournament four times. CONMEBOL is also the only confederation in FIFA to have won the World Cup outside its own continent and on every single continent that the tournament has been hosted (mainly due to Brazil), whereas a European team has never been able to win the tournament outside of the European continent. Two of the top seven teams in the FIFA World Rankings are CONMEBOL members (Brazil and Argentina). CONMEBOL is the only confederation in the world to have three teams that have won the FIFA World Cup at least two times each (Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay), and has in its ranks the most successful national team in World Cups (Brazil, with a leading five World Cups). The confederation has also fared well in club tournaments. CONMEBOL clubs have won 22 Intercontinental Cups and three FIFA Club World Cups, one trophy more than UEFA clubs.

Among the tournaments conducted by CONMEBOL are the Copa Libertadores (analogous to the UEFA Champions League) and the Copa Sudamericana (analogous to the UEFA Europa League), both for club teams, and Copa América for men's national teams.

    Andrew,
That's a good suggestion about our guys training in Colorado. That would also be great for us playing in Mexico City, with the high altitude there. I REALLY hope that we beat England, etc. Getting to the round of 16 or better would be HUGE,especially after what happened in WC '06. GO RED,WHITE AND BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!! ^^

US always gets up for the big matches (Spain 09, Brazil 09, Portugal 02, Italy 06) and always seems to struggle against teams they should be able to beat easily. England would ignore the US at it's own peril. US is more than capable of a drew or even an upset. US typically plays more aggressive and without fear when they are the underdog and usually get the shock result. And yes, for the record, English are @#$%s who think they are God's gift to soccer (football) and tjheir arrogance in the sport will be their undoing yet again.

I love all these English morons who say that we should say "nil" instead of "nothing and various other things.

Most people in this country could care less about SOCCER, but we'll still beat your ass. What will you say then?

I think it's hilarious that a country so hellbent on SOCCER can't even win a World Cup.

I can't wait for the USA vs. England match. I love that England fans are quickly saying that England will easily win...I'm confident they're in for a rude awakening.

England has arguably the best players in the world, and yet as a team, they're notorious for underperforming. They should be embarassed with their performances. USA on the other hand has mediocre players (compared to England's players) and has managed to work well as a team and exceed expectations.

USA will pull off an upset on June 12. USA!!!

st8j(#19) you make an excellent point....the usa dominated the brazilians in the first half of that confed cup game but in the second half they looked totally spent and never really mounted a good attack........this team needs to find a way to either train harder focusing mainly on how to run for all 90 mins or they need to find a place where they can train in altitude to get them used to playing at higher elevations(ie Colorado).........if the team were to train in Colorado their cardio would benefit greatly and they would hopefully be able to play all 90 mins and stand a surviving chance against the bigger teams that have great stamina and endurance.......now as for the draw, i feel as though usa should be able to advance to atleast the round of 16 if not beyond......slovenia and algeria have strong teams, but if the usa plays the way they did against spain and in the first half against brazil, they are truly capable of beating any team............hopefully next years world cup doesnt end in utter disappointment like it did in 2006........GO USA!!!!!!!!!!!

and if they blow it..........GO ARGENTINA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steve, I hear ya. Good points.

New wave- The term soccer originated in England. American football and soccer came about at the same time here in the United States. American football was more popular. Soccer was originally referred by Americans as football as well. Instead of creating confusion, Soccer, the English nickname for it became the term used by Americans. Why change the more popular sports name? So we don't affend Europeans? We still use an English term for the sport. GET OVER IT, Americans don't fall asleep at night thinking about comforting people across the world by changing the name soccer to football. Yes players use their feet to play soccer. Players use their feet, legs, arms etc. in American football. Should we change the name to bodywithpigskin ball? No, football works just fine for me and the rest of America. It seems that you just need something to whine about when it comes to Americans.
As for your predictions about how the USA will perform in the World Cup. I guess that is your opinion, however I feel you will be dissapointed come to June. Oh and the way some of the teams across the world take dives(probably whoever you root for as well), and flail and cry and roll on the ground over no foul whatsoever is pathetic. At least when you get to watch the American team take the field, they'll play like men. If you get a chance check this video out
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXHCbIBEhc0
The American McBride take a cheap shot, doesn't whine, gets up, gets stiched up and is back in play 2 minutes later.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPYsQXw7By0

On the other hand you have mysterious invisible bullets shoot some other international players.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8W00d3yJKl4

I'd rather have my national team play soccer like men, instead of playing football like cheating babies.

Reason to smile? England vs TEAM USA = 3-nil (not 3-nothing)*
Slovenia vs TEAM USA = 1-nil (not 1-nothing)*
Algeria vs TEAM USA = 2-nil (not 2-nothing)*

Memo to the YANKS: Stick to handball and go throw a pigskin 10 yards and yell TOUCHDOWN!

*American commentators use nothing instead of nil (0) when telling a score.

    PS: It's football not soccer.

Wes, Just to correct Richard P again, who is giving out bad info here, Slovenia didn't beat the Czech Republic to qualify. Their game was 0-0. Slovenia finished ahead in the group because the Czechs played lousy. Even Slovakia finished ahead of both in the qualifying group! Before that, the Czechs beat Slovenia in 2008. And as for Russia, they beat each other but Slovenia advanced because of better away goals. Wow! Now isn't that impressive? Based on this record, I'm supposed to believe Slovenia is really tough? They are lucky to be here. Sure, they could beat someone only because even the best teams have bad games sometimes.

Steve- Im just saying they shouldn't be overlooked. Yes, I am happy USA got Slovenia over France or Portugal. Yes, Im happy USA got Algeria over Ivory Coast/Ghana/Cameroon. However neither Slovenia and Algeria are pushovers. They won't even be pushovers for England. If the team has that attitude that they are pushovers then were gonna regret it. Don't get me wrong here... I think were getting 6 or even 7 points out of this group.

Couldn't agree with Richard more... The USA doesn't give a crap about fancy footwork or tricks. It comes down to winning. Americans will get behind a team with grit, determination, TEAMWORK, and HEART over a team that looks cool. Plus we can't overlook Slovenia or Algeria like he said. This is actually where I have faith in Bob Bradley. He will make sure that the team stays focused on getting 3 points against each of them.

Does anyone realize how well we lucked out in this draw? If get out of this group, which is completely feasible. Then there is a 50/50 chance we don't get Germany in the group of 16. Germany is in a tough group and can get either 1st or 2nd in their group with Ghana, Australia, and Serbia. That would leave us in a promising position to move on to the quarterfinals. Even if we do get Germany they can be beaten. Players like Klose and Ballack aren't in their primes anymore and the team in general lacks the creativity of the South American or other European teams. From there on out anything can happen. The quarerfinal mathup could possibly be Mexico/Argentina. I was at the Argentina/USA matchup in Giants stadium and we drew them 0-0.
All im saying is that we have a great opportunity to make some magic happen this world cup, Actually I don't even know if it would be considered magic anymore because I truly feel that USA has a solid team to make a run at it.

Steve(#28)...Just wondering if you actually know anything about soccer? Slovenia beat Russia AND Czech Republic to qualify. Algeria won all of its games down the stretch to qualify. These teams may not be a powers but they are hot and confident...a very dangerous combination. The US would lose to both of them if they had your attitude. Thankfully, the US knows that they can't look past ANY team in this tourney and therefore will beat Slovenia and Algeria.

LarryC(#25)...Nice hate on the US there. See, the problem with your statement is that the US doesn't care about style points...style points don't count for squat...unless you're a US hater of course. Here in the US all's we care about is winning. Period!

The US certainly got a good draw. We need to capitalize on this and move to knockout where the REAL games begin. I have faith in our boyz. I've been saying it all year that there is a sense of destiny with these guys. I'm not guaranteeing a WC trophy for the US so haters back off. But I do sense this team will make a great showing...I wouldn't be suprised to see them in the quarters again. Go USA!!!!

The US team can win new fans by beating England who are totally dismissing the US team and do not think the US stands a chance against them. The USA team needs to prove to England and the rest of the world that they are serious about making it beyond the first round and deep into the tournament.
