Sounders beat DC United 2-1 to win US Open Cup

  • Print

WASHINGTON (AP)—The Seattle Sounders hope to build on their U.S. Open Cup championship when they return to MLS play.

Freddy Montero and Roger Levesque scored to lead Seattle to a 2-1 victory over D.C. United in the Open Cup final Wednesday night, giving the expansion Sounders their first trophy.

Seattle came in winless in its last three MLS games and is in third place in the Western Conference.

“The team needs to win big games to start believing they can win big games,” Sounders coach Sigi Schmid said. “This is the first step in that process.”

Montero smashed in a rebound in the 67th minute and Levesque scored in the 85th as Seattle joined Chicago (1998) as the only teams to win the Open Cup in their inaugural season.

Clyde Simms scored for D.C. in the 89th minute.

The win was especially satisfying for the Sounders, who felt slighted after the United won the right to host the final from the U.S. Soccer Federation.

A media war of words between Seattle general manager Adrian Hanauer and United president Kevin Payne followed that decision, and the 17,329 who came to RFK Stadium more than doubled the attendance for D.C.’s Open Cup-winning victory over second-division Charleston (S.C.) last year.

“I was giving Kevin Payne a little bit of stick, saying that this is our attendance for an autograph session,” Sounders goalkeeper Kasey Keller said. “But, obviously, the D.C. fans were great. They were vocal, they were loud the whole game, but our fans in Seattle are something special.”

Montero thundered the ball into a gaping net to put Seattle up 1-0 after Freddie Ljungberg reached Steve Zakuani’s cross, only to be denied by a diving Josh Wicks.

Wicks lunged but couldn’t beat Montero. The D.C. goalkeeper was then ejected in the aftermath of the goal for apparently stepping on Montero, who was sprawled on the ground after scoring.

“I made a mistake and it cost us a player and it cost us the game eventually,” said Wicks, also lost his cool in a 1-0 league win at Chicago on Saturday in an altercation with Marc Burch, his own defender. “It is what it is.”

As United struggled to cope a man down, Levesque made it 2-0 when he tapped into an empty net after Sebastien Le Toux’s cross beat substitute goalkeeper Milos Kocic.

Simms also scored into an empty net after reaching a deflected free kick. United pressured through five minutes of stoppage time, but could do no more than force a clearing punch from Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller with a late corner kick.

“To think that you’re a man up and you’re going to piss away a two-goal lead, it would’ve been extremely disappointing,” Keller said. “But we hung in there. We lost a little bit of discipline there, gave up that goal. But we won, and that’s what matters.”

The Open Cup often suffers from the perception that it is a distant second in importance to the MLS Cup, which crowns the league champion every November. The U.S. Open Cup, which began in 1914, is open to all levels of professional and amateur teams associated with the USSF.

That didn’t stop around 100 green-clad fans from traveling to RFK Stadium from the Pacific Northwest. They jumped in delirium in their perch in the upper deck as the final minutes ticked down, and received an ovation from the entire Sounders squad before the trophy presentation.

“Whether it’s in Europe or in the (U.S.) or with the national team, winning a cup is winning a cup,” Keller said. “And we really wanted to make a point and win it for our fans, and for our organization that have really made this a first-class experience for everybody.”

Seattle was unfortunate not to lead by halftime, after

Wicks twice denied Montero from inside the 6-yard box in the first half and also kicked away Ljungberg’s low drive. D.C.’s best chance of the the half came just five minutes in, when Chris Pontius missed wide of the left post from about 6 yards.

“We were under the gun a lot,” said United midfielder Ben Olsen. “Give them a lot of credit. They’ve got some talented guys, and some pretty dynamic players up top. It’s a long night, even if you’re trying to play even numbers.”

DC United, all you people for seattle and los angeles and philadelphia, please, please

When you look at the talent for DC United, Wicks, Pontius, Wallace, they have players with great energy to them for 5 years at least. They lost the us open cup and that was because of wicks actions. Though in truth, he is exactly what dc united need. DC United is a team which should be leading the league, but get complacent , especially at the back. Next year, when this club starts the year, it will be at the top. DC United has actually formed a relatively good club within a year.

And, like the new york red bulls, this is probably the beginning of another great rivalry. In a week or two seattle and DC meet again at RFK and I imagine DC United will be more than pumped up. This happens in soccer. I have seen more bloddier and rougher things happen. Any one who is a real fan knows that and if they are honest knows there is no blood feud here.Wicks energy is all about competition, so lets put this act in the right perspective.

    GO DC!!!

Wicks needs anger management. He should have been carded after his tirade with Burch the previous match. Again, MLS refs are not doing their job.

Samson, I couldn't agree with you more. I'm just wondering if mls is ever going to make the switch to a european schedule. It sounds good on paper, but I don't think it's possible to play in places like new england and toronto in january and february.

i agree...i have been saying for a long time that i think the mix of young latin talent and young u.s. talent combined with veteran european talent is going to prove to be a great positive in the future..it is important for us to build solid foundation so that when we do start getting prime europeans the level of play for the league as a whole is solid..you dont want players coming here in their prime and leaving with a sour taste in their mouths...when they come, i want them to stay....we've got some great young latin and u.s. players...freddie is a great player, and we are lucky to have him...if we could get more guys like that, just imagine how our young players will develop...most of the top talent going to europe today is from south america anyway

The top player i have seen ALL year in MLS is FREDDIE LJUNGBERG...

I am not a Seattle fan but i now make the effort to see their highlights due to "Fast Freddie"...

These types of top skilled Euro players are the type the MLS needs to bring over...he can still play with the best of them...his work effort is great...his attitude in playing in the USA is super...look at how excitied he was winning the U.S. Open last night...

The MLS should MARKET THEIR TOP players NATIONWIDE and not just leave it up to the indie teams front office...

FREDDIE should be a poster boy for the MLS as he is a true player to watch...he is making me a fan of his...

Samson, the reason the players are not getting paid much is so you dont have outrageous wages for teams that cant generate a ton of money in a country that hasnt yet gone soccer crazy.

I feel really bad for these players first the MLS hardly pays them anything, then they cram the entire schedule into the hot summers of the US then the know it all fans come in and talk smack cause the guys cant play in 100 degree whether, i would like to see the PL or La Liga teams play the MLS schedule its damn near impossible thats y teams cant keep momentum going for more than a year or two cause the guys just break down. and the roster the roster WTF is that all about, i mean the MLS owners are all billionaires and some even own NFL and NBA and NHL teams as well and they are not willing to raise the salary cap to at least 10 million a year, 2.3 million divided up between 18 players WTF is that all about.....i mean i love soccer and i want to route for the Galaxy but the MLS makes it almost impossible, its like they want you to route against the teams and the league.

In your face DC!!! A Seattle pro sports team actually won something resembling a championship. After all the hulabaloo over the site, it is great to see the Sounders WIN on the road in a big game.

This will help our momentum for the next few MLS games. Tough luck DC--maybe next year.

Wow, what an empty stadium. DC clearly doesn't care about soccer or this cup. Too bad they didn't put the Cup in a real stadium that would have been full and fostered some more interest in US soccer. 15,000.. really? For the Cup? Really DC? That's sad as hell. Wait, what's your motto for desperate ticket selling? "We win trophies... um, sometimes..." Yeah, that's it posers... suck it hard losers.

I don't think these MLS games can get more boring than what they already are! I cannot believed I watched the whole thing and it's funny how the commentators try to make big deals out of nothing to try and keep the game interesting but @#$%.. it don't work. too many average soccer players to the worlds standard and it's like watching highschool soccer
