Onyewu out 6 months, jeopardizing World Cup

  • Print

CHICAGO (AP)—American defender Oguchi Onyewu will be sidelined for six months following surgery to repair a ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee, a layoff that could jeopardize his appearance in next year’s World Cup.

After Onyewu was injured in last week’s World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica, the U.S. Soccer Federation originally projected his recovery at three to four months. The federation issued a new estimate of six months on Thursday, a day after national team physician Dr. Bert Mandelbaum operated on Onyewu for one hour in Los Angeles.

That gives Onyewu little time to regain his form ahead of the World Cup, which opens June 11 in South Africa.

The 27-year-old Onyewu signed with AC Milan last summer but he appeared in just one of the club’s 10 competitive matches this season before getting hurt. AC Milan chief executive officer Adriano Galliani said last week the club hopes to receive compensation from the U.S. federation because of the injury.

Watford’s Jay DeMerit, another U.S. central defender, is sidelined following a cornea replacement operation last weekend. Forward Charlie Davies is likely to miss the World Cup after sustaining serious injuries, including several broken bones, in a car crash last week.

At Mike F. I'll say whatever I want whenever I want. It was clealy a typo whereby I ommitted 82 WC. You're a classic internet dork that starts referring to grammar when you can't validate your point. Your post that I initially attacked was clearly out of anti US bias than it was on knowledge of the game. Then, you whined like a girl that I was harrassing you after you were the one that stated the US were sissies. Don't talk sh*t if you don't want to deal with the response. Capiche? All my points regarding the US - Italy game were quite valid, and you can't deal with it coz you're obviously anti-yank and speak out of your @ss on the sport. So, once again, I've been watching the game since the 82 WC, and I'll own you on the game.

Andrew you are a clown. Please refrain from commenting on this post anymore. Also learn how to read and write before you post anything online ever again. Your grammar is horrible.

Wow Andrew seriously get a clue before you post idiotic comments like that. First things first, I bet you would definitly kick my teeth in if you ever saw me because you disagree with my comments. Thats real grown up, what are you a 5 year old. Or are you just someone who likes to commit internet harassment? Second, let me give you a geography lesson. Most of the American on team USA werent born in the United States either, therefore they are just as GUILTY as Rossi for playing for the country they have worked to get their citizenship in. Third, please dont ever post a comment on a soccer related topic again unless you actually have an understanding of the game. I think I would be doing alot of people a favor by getting you to stop sending idiotic comments.

@ Andrew, Learn the sport before posting.

The reason Italy did not score again even though the USA had a man down??? USA playes a 10 man defense...it was a 9 man defense after the send off.

As far as the USA's defensive issue...they have a Mexican American that they picked up....but Bradley has no common sense.

Torres and Donovan in the midfield would be great for team USA, Move Dempsey and Altidore upfront and bench his son.

USA has some depth this world cup....but the head coach is an idiot.

LOL @ Mike F. Is the F for @#$%ot? According to Mikey, the only reason US drew w/ Italy was because of the own goal. No mikey dikey, the only reason Italy didn't get upset in that game was because the paid off ref sent off 2 Yanks after the Italian got rightfully sent off. The precious @#$%oty Euros couldn't stand the thought of precious Italy losing to a bunch a Yanks. We beat Portugal and Spain in competetive tournaments and you know good and damn well USA was gonna get one more and win that game 2-1. BTW, Italy couldn't score w/ a man advantage, so the draw was the least the Yanks deserved. As for Rossi, he was born in New Jersey. What part of that don't you understand? Italy got that win thanks to an American. My family's from County Mayo but that doesn't make me real Irish does it? Sissy Yanks. You talk real tough on the internet but I guarantee I'd kick your teeth in if I ever saw your @#$% talking ass.

The US defense was weak to start with so whether he can make it back in time for 2010 is really not that big of a deal. Oguchi Onyewu was more of a spectator anyhow, never seemed to learn how to mark an opposing player and moved too slow to be of much help. I guess he was too used to sitting on an Italian bench and not playing!

hey post #34, did you watch the milan real madrid game? guess who won!! have you watched any serie a games lately? this dumb american defender hasnt done @#$% for milan. he was playing like a lost puppy. he is no where talented enough to play in serie a. nobody on the us team is. and lets go back to the 2006 world cup. italy dominated the united states. the only reason it was tied is because christiano zaccardo scored an own goal. and oh, by the way who won that tournament? and if thats too far in the past for you lets back up to this past summer when italy dominated the us in the confederations cup. all the united states had to say after was oh rossi is a trator. he has lived in italy for half his life. god if i was a talented soccer player with dual citizenship id rather play in italy too over the united states. bunch of no talent sissys thats all us soccer is.

Have any of you watched any Italian Serie A soccer lately? The Italians look horrible! The AC Milan/Real Madrid game was pitiful. The way AC Milan's defense played again Madrid, Gooch would have been an improvement. Agreed, Gooch hasn't been playing very well, however, Milan hasn't been playing well either. Galliani's on the verge of bankruptcy! No wonder he's pressing payback for Gooch. His arrogance irks me. GO US!!! Handle business. I hope we play the Italians. If we tied them with 9 players in the last cup, imagine what we can do with a full squad.

CAN YOU IMAGINE the mistakes GOOCH would give up if he was given the nod to play at the World Cup ?
He doesn't play a lick now and look how bad he defends...
It is all over for the Gooch...nice guy...built like a tank...but moves like one too...
COME ON HOME TO THE USL Gooch...your days with the USMNT and Europe are over...
At 27 - if he never learned to mark a man now and cannot stop the habitual ball-watching he has - he will NEVER play top football...just a fact...he has the body but not the soccer brains...
    GOOD BYE GOOCH.
    Hello ?????

    i like Gooch.
    Seems like a nice guy.
however - BEST injury for the USMNT in years...BB will have to think outside of his predjudice ways and bring in a better defender....
GOOCH SUCKS as a defender. Game after game he is giving up the man who gets the goals.
Did you see his positioning after the Costa Rican player blew right past him ????(this is unnacceptabel at even NCAA level of defending). He frigging stopped running and stood there LOST. Gooch is America's best habitual ball-watcher and cannot mark a man with any consistance - hence why this physical stud was sent packing with from the EPL and will never play for AC Milan...
He is better suited for the USL or maybe the MLS.
What a waste of a physical presence. Top level football is not for the Gooch.

So he has a month in the season to get back in shape? Can Milan loan him somewhere or do they have reserve games in Serie A?
He probably will make the trip to SA to train but he souldn't play in the opening game. Unless he just has a spectacular sendoff friendly, there's no way he can go from 0 to play in the top tournament in the world. Opens a chance for Pearce or Clarenece Goodson to come back??

i was not as high on gooch as some ofthe others here but this definitely hurts. he is an intimidating presence...sometimes its not about the plays he makes but about the plays he prevents because the winger sees him there and decides NOT to cross to a striker since there is no chance the striker will get the header. now the us has to not only find a suitable replacement, but get them up to speed in a relatively short amount of time. not an easy task. but everyone who says this is doom for the us does not understand one thing....when you have a team with no real superstars, losing a few players does not crush all hopes...we will find another semi start, plug him in, and and kick some @$$ in the wc...SOME @$$, not all.
