Injured Ronaldo ruled out of playoffs by Portugal

  • Print

LISBON, Portugal (AP)—Cristiano Ronaldo will miss both legs of Portugal’s World Cup playoff against Bosnia-Herzegovina after the team’s doctors ruled that his ankle is still injured.

The Portuguese Football Federation said Tuesday in a statement that doctors checked the winger’s fitness after he flew into Lisbon and agreed with Real Madrid’s diagnosis that the player was unfit.

Madrid had initially balked at allowing Ronaldo to travel.

Portugal plays Bosnia-Herzegovina in Lisbon on Saturday and at Zenica on Nov. 18 with a place in next year’s World Cup tournament in South Africa on the line.

Ronaldo was hurt on Sept. 30. He aggravated the injury while playing for Portugal in a qualifier against Hungary on Oct. 10 and hasn’t played since.

    I would have rather paid Ribery the money that that @#$% makes! A real team player not a ball hog!!
    Footballer of the year! Worst choice ever!! Should have been biggest weiner of the year and someone who has 0 respect in the soccer world!! Does he even know the meaning of team. A real champion wins the world cup and until he does that he will always be nothing!!

    @35 .....Hm....Let me remind you Portugal got beat by mediocre teams before, the Greek team of 2004 was mediocre team wasn't it?!?! 'Coz they haven't won sh** since or played impressively ever since (not even than IMO), and than Albania...so don't talk about mediocre teams and Portugal!!
    GO BOSNIA!!!!

    Hey Jack....u remind me of when all the colombians were saying tha colombia was going to win the World Cup a few years ago....bla bla bla...then they didnt make it past the first round.

    Bosnia is borderline mediocre team, it might be improving, but there is no reason for you to be all excited about it. They will likely be watching the world cup from home on the TV, just like you.

    wow ur a real rocket scientist...duh...you can put any player...CR, Messi, whoever on a average team and they won't win anything....duh....no player wins things on his own.

    I guess you know more about soccer than all of the media and all of the soccer coaches that voted for him, on the Golden ball and Fifa player of the year.

    You're a jackass.

    @Barcamanu
    That's a lie, only a small number were penalties, most were free kicks and shots on goal.

    Both messi and Ronaldo are great players, for me both are good in their own pattern , i fancy both, but Ronaldo alias Obrigado is a star as well as a specialist whose enemies ,Fans, admirersand those that hate him cannot afford to miss watching whenever he is playing. instead of creating a difference, have you ever think of what it would look like seeing them play in the same club/team.

    to #15 and ronaldo doesn't need a good time to shine? he's a great club player yes... but but him on the international stage and he continues to flop and he doesn't deliver in the high pressure games either... barca completely shut him down last year... and messi scored an easy header... are you kidding me? the dude is like 5'6" (compared to ronaldo being 6'1") he jumps higher than a defender and sinks it.. and yes messi is on a better team... better in the way that the don't have to buy all their talent... 7 out of their starting 11 in the champions league final were all brought up through their youth system... real completely fell apart with out him
