‘We got robbed’: Irish demand replay with France

  • Print

DUBLIN (AP)—Ireland appealed to France and FIFA on Thursday to replay their World Cup playoff after an obvious hand ball by Thierry Henry set up the deciding goal.

Ireland’s government and soccer association asked for Wednesday’s 1-1 draw in the second leg at Stade de France to be replayed. France advanced to next year’s World Cup in South Africa 2-1 on total goals.

FIFA said it received Ireland’s request for a replay, though it was unclear if the governing body of soccer would seriously consider it.

Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni called the prospect of a rematch “impossible.” Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen said he would “have a chat about it” with French President Nicolas Sarkozy at a meeting of the 27 EU leaders in Brussels.

“Fairness is part of the game,” Cowen said.

FIFA declined to comment specifically on Ireland’s protests but pointed to its rule forbidding second-guessing of on-field decisions by referees.

John Delaney, the Football Association of Ireland’s chief executive, said he doubted FIFA would respond positively unless French soccer authorities agreed to Ireland’s call for a rematch.

“It’s up to them, in particular the French, to recognize there was a travesty last night, an injustice,” Delaney said.

In extra time, Henry twice handled the ball, then passed to William Gallas in the Irish penalty box for the deciding goal. At the time, the game was 17 minutes from reaching a penalty-kick shootout.

In 2005, FIFA invalidated the result of a World Cup qualifier between Uzbekistan and Bahrain following a referee’s critical error. Trapattoni appeared to immediately undercut that appeal by offering his own assessment of FIFA politics.

“I know it’s impossible to repeat the game,” Trapattoni said.

Instead, he urged FIFA and the European soccer’s governing body to consider video replays, saying what happened to Ireland “can be repeated in the future. That’s why we have to stop it.”

Ireland assistant manager Liam Brady and several players appealed to France’s sense of honor.

“If the game’s going to survive, it’s got to be an equal playing field,” Brady said. “If we’re going to have integrity and dignity in the world game, the game should be replayed. And we’ll go to Paris to play it.”

Some Irish players accused Henry of lying when he told them that his hand ball had been accidental and instinctive.

“I asked him on the pitch: Did you hand-ball it?” Irish left back Kevin Kilbane said. “And he said, ‘Yes—but I didn’t mean it.”’

Kilbane said he also asked referee Martin Hansson after the final whistle if he had seen the play.

“He said: ‘I can 100 percent say it wasn’t hand ball.’ When he said that to me, I knew full well that he was just lying to me because he hadn’t even seen it.”

Irish Justice Minister Dermot Ahern said he doubted FIFA would sanction a replay. He reflected the widespread Irish view that the sport’s powers favored France’s qualification.

“They probably won’t grant it as we are minnows in world football,” Ahern said, “but let’s put them on the spot anyway.”

Irish lawmaker Joe McHugh said France should follow the 1999 precedent set by Arsenal’s French manager, Arsene Wenger, who volunteered to replay a match in England’s FA Cup after Arsenal won on an unfair goal.

Several Irish players were in tears after the game and rued their missed scoring chances after outplaying France much of the night.

“We got robbed,” Ireland defender Sean St. Ledger said. “We feel cheated. We were the better team.”

Henry’s hand ball, he said, “has cost a lot of us our dreams.”

I'm a soccer referee, and will freely admit that we should be using cameras for major decisions such as penalties and disputed goals. But the referee and linesman in this case made several mistakes anyway; (i) the linesman missed two offside players just before the goal, (ii) the linesman had a clear line of sight but failed to flag the handball, (iii) the referee could simply have asked Henri if he had handled the ball - because as long as play has not restarted, the referee can change any decision, and could then have given a free kick to Ireland instead.

The referee's authority has to be respected of course - otherwise there would be chaos. But in such obvious cases as this, far more damage is done by turning a blind eye to a catalogue of errors by the officials. FIFA should declare these to be 'extraordinary circumstances' and arrange the replay. I'm sure the French people would want that too, because whatever subsequent success they now have in the World Cup will be stained by this event.

Would Thierry Henry really say such a thing?

"Hello, I've called you all together to apologize to my teammates, my opponents, a worthy Irish side, all of France, and to all the Fútbol world. I intentionally controlled the ball with my left hand, and as a result, William Gallas scored a goal. As you all know, this goal allowed France to advance to the World Cup Finals. After reflection and consultation with those I trust, I am requesting the game be replayed. I have submitted a formal request that this happen as soon as possible to FIFA and the French Fútbol Federation.

"As for the actual incident, please allow me to explain: As you all know, fútbol is a fast game and plays happen very quickly. The ball was heading out of bounds and, of course, I didn't want it to. To prevent this, I controlled it with my left hand; and, as crazy as this might sound to someone who hasn't played fútbol, I did so instinctively.

"I did not, in the heat of the moment, consciously make a decision to violate the rules of the game. Just after I did it I expected to hear a whistle to stop play. Instead, I heard the crowd react to the goal and I celebrated accordingly. As I did so I immediately realized the quandary I had created for myself. As a player, I don't believe I have the power to call off a goal by admitting to the referee I controlled it with my hand. If I had to replay that moment, however, I would have tested this belief.

"I would have, I should have, informed the referee of my mistake and let him decide what to do. Instead, I let things be and many people have suffered as a result. Mostly, the game has suffered and I do not want this to be my legacy. I am not a cheat. I am a player of a beautiful game. I want fairness and the honor of the game upheld. This is why I'm requesting the game be replayed, and I hope FIFA and the French Fútbol Federation will comply with my request. Thank you."

It is an awful travesty for the Irish side, and I can't say as for sure that Henry did or did not handle the ball intentionally. What I do know, is that if either of them had won their group, there would not have been the opportunity for this to happen. It is tough to see any competitor have to be defeated in this manner, regardless of the sport. Either way, I don't believe FIFA will open a whole can of worms by replaying this match. Germany in 2010!

I'm a proud Irish-American and I'm very disaapointed that the Irish did not qualify for the 2010 WC in S.Africa. However, I believe that replaying this game would be an embarassment for the Irish. Bad, and downright awful calls are made constantly in sporting events. That's just the way it is. If every game were played until each call made by an official was exactly 100% accurate there would be no end to the games.

What have the Irish done in the history of man? Created Guinness? That's about it.

What has France done except perfect the waving of the White Flag and waiting for the US and British Empire to bail their sorry @$$es so they don't get worn out by the Germans again.

I hope the two countries with the most ethnic Irish descendants, England or the US, beat France to a pulp...that or the Germans will do it for like the millionth time...

I'm not bashing on Ireland, just praising France. I'd rather live in Ireland than where I live now, U.S. of Hate, where I have to have an on-campus job to pay for some tuitiion for the first time ever. A sociology honors student and I cannot get a full schlarship and we don't have health coverage for everyone and too many rich people not supporting those who shouldn't have to work because of disability, they are in school, so on.

The US "agencies" now know your identity geosa and your enemy pronouncements. You HAD a student visa...

It's still not enough. Maybe you could get someone to play the heavy on one of the qualifying teams that plays France in the Cup. That would utterly crude and barbaric and disappointing as hell to the French if their cheating player got hurt.

Then they would know how if felt not just to have the handball uncalled but to have that bastard parade around the field like he'd scored on the up and up.

Have a Guiness Ireland. You got screwed by a player willing to play that way and then pretend he didn't. Pretend is too strong. He inherently plays that way, always did, and someone should pay the bugger back. Aye.
