US midfielder Dempsey extends Fulham contract

  • Print

LONDON (AP)—United States midfielder Clint Dempsey has extended his contract with English club Fulham until the end of the 2012-13 season.

Dempsey joined the west London club from New England Revolution in January 2007 and signed a second contract in May 2008.

Dempsey started in the midfield Wednesday night for the U.S. in a 2-1 loss to Mexico in a World Cup qualifier.

That two-year deal had been set to expire at the end of the coming season, when the 26-year-old midfielder would have been able to leave without being subject to a transfer fee.

Dempsey has hit 14 goals in 81 Premier League matches for Fulham and was the co-leading scorer with seven last season, when the club finished in seventh place for its best topflight finish.

Dempsey started 28 of Fulham’s 38 Premier League matches last season and came on as a substitute in another seven. He scored against Egypt, Spain and Brazil to help the United States finish runner-up at the Confederations Cup in South Africa.

Clint Dempsey, Charlie Davies and Jozy Altidore are about the best the USA has to offer. Granted, Altidore needs experience and playing time to develop but does show a lot of promise. Dempsey is a fairly good midfielder though he is not consistent. He failed to show up in Mexico, of course most of the team failed to show up so you can't put the blame all on him! Donovan is an average player playing with an "elite player ego" which makes him prone to excuses when he goofs up which is quite frequently! If he would quit worrying about Beckum and everyone else and concentrate on improving his own game, well - he might make a pretty good player!

The problem with American soccer is that it is a rich kids sport, you see where all of the top college players come from, they come from the top and most expensive prep schools. Travel and youth teams charge hundreds to thousands of dollars just to play in their programs. These programs are still poorly organized and do not produce results in terms of successful players. The problem is in the American coaching attitude, the systematic one size fits all approach is useful in football, basketball, and baseball but it can not be transferred to soccer. Another obvious problem is that the best athletes are not playing soccer in the United States, they are playing basketball and football. If Deon Sanders played soccer instead of football we may have seen one of the best soccer players ever.

The best American players aren't even on the squad. We don't know where they are. I have noticed over the years that Americans go abroad and play. When they come home and they are all put to gether with the mutts from MLS, the National Team flounders like a three legged dog.MLS sucks. USSF sucks. The politicians from the Referee Department to the players are so small time political that they ruin a country that should have some of the best athletes playing for the team. To start with Bradley is out of his relm. He isn't a National Team coach. He is bearly a youth club team coach. Bora was the best they hired. Everywhere he has gone, Bora built a good team for the WC. But he paid dearly here in the US with all the pecking and meddling. US had no pro league for him to draw from. When they tried to get Beckenbauer, he said forget it, that the MLS was too poor and players were not developed. That is still true but you hear Frank Sinatra singing "I did it my way" in the back ground while they tank again as they will in WC2010. Soccer has no soccer people in the US.

The best American nationals (RIGHT NOW):

    1. Clint Dempsey
    2. Landon Donovan
    3. Oguchi Onyewu
    4. Charlie Davies
    5. Maurice Edu

    Honorable Mention: Jozy Altidore

The problem is that Davies, Onyewu, and Edu still need time to develop. Altidore is intriguing, but needs to prove he can play at a high level. He's still young, so there's still hope..

He also scored two against Chelsea last season, including an injury time header to get the draw. Say what you want but he does not choke in big spots.

he chokes when it counts the most, you mean like against Ghana in the World Cup, and Egypt and Spain in the confed cup? Yeah, he's a choke artist alright. If you said he had the tendency to disappear in games I might agree, but the guy has scored some pretty big goals for the US.
