Spain regains 1st place, US 14th in FIFA rankings

  • Print

ZURICH (AP)—Spain regained first place from Brazil in the FIFA rankings on Friday, while the United States dropped three places to 14th.

The European champions regained the top spot they lost to the South Americans in July after exhibition wins over fellow World Cup qualifier Argentina and Austria.

Brazil beat England 1-0 and Oman 2-0 this week but was overtaken because older ranking points lost value, and its wins came against lower-ranked opposition.

The Netherlands and Italy stayed third and fourth, while the biggest mover in the top 10 was Portugal, which rose five places to fifth by twice beating Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0 to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa. Portugal benefited in the rankings because it played more World Cup qualifying matches.

Germany slipped a place to sixth and France rose two to seventh after Thierry Henry’s hand ball set up the goal that sent his country to the World Cup ahead of Ireland, which dropped two places to No. 36.

Argentina, England and Croatia rounded out the top 10, with Cameroon the top-ranked African nation at No. 11.

Australia was the highest-ranked team from the Asian confederation at No. 21.

I could be mistaken because I read this for the first time today but I think they go on about the US being ranked 12th because the arguments were happening over the summer. The US was probably ranked 12th at the time. I still can't believe how race was such an issue through all these postings. Prove points with facts and not opinions. We all know who won the group now. The US. But it took a last minute effort to take it from Mexico. Mexico seemed down and out and they came back. They are no slouches. Good luck to us all though in the World Cup. I just want to see good close matches and I want it to be fair unlike France V Ireland.

#57 Jonathan and #56 COPAmundial and #69 ABOGADO DE EL DIABLO (which should not be "DE EL" but rather "DEL")

According to Wikipedia, Worldatlas.com, and ANY scientific and geography text book, journal, etc., there are 7 continents. I trust THEIR criteria and scientific observation more than dumb soccer fans' dissertation created only to argue "my team is the best in this part of the world".

And Jonathan, I suggest you study geography a little more. Otherwise, using your criteria, since Africa and Asia are "divided by this thing called" the SUEZ CANAL, then they must be one continent - Asiafrica. And since you say Asia and Europe are one continent, then Asia, Africa and Europe must be - Eurasiafrica. And Asia is only separated from Alaska by ice, which is solid, so they should be connected too. And since you connected North America and South America, then we have...Eurasiafracamerica.

    See how DUMB that is?

And what is this talk about USA #12? The article says it is #14 - which I think is about right. And since the USA has won the CONCACAF WQ qualifying final round 2 times in a row, guess who is the best in CONCACAF?!?!

    Go USA!

@ ABOGADO DE EL DIABLO -
Hey dumbass, not only did the U.S. make it to the final eight in 2002 but they've also made to the SEMI-FINALS of the WC, finishing 3rd in the inaugural tournament in 1930. Last I checked, Mexico has NEVER made it past the quarter finals in any WC tournament in which they've participated and in the inaugural 1930 WC they didn't even make it past Stage 1 (aka the first round). Next time maybe you should use your internet connection to do a little research before spouting off at the mouth about @#$% you know nothing about!

And props to Jeffrey L for pointing out how stupid ABOGADO DE EL DIABLO's comments were. And by the way, a drug runner in church is still a drug runner.

I'll be the first to admit that a lot of fluky things happened in that 2002 World Cup, though. The officiating was atrocious in several games and was horrendously biased in favor of the South Korean team. Ridiculous that they made the semi-finals.
I am just excited that the World Cup is only a year away. I love these big international tournaments, there's nothing like it. The most recent Euro championships might have been the most exciting tournament I've ever seen---in any sport.

Fifa ranking is bull, does not makes sense with reality you all know that , how a team tath has never made the second round on the world cup (u.s.a.) in history can be considered 12th in ranking.

only in the american continent at least 5 national teams are better than usa , probably more
    argentina
    brasil
    paraguay
    uruguay
    chile
    mexico
    to mention some,

we all know that , wath is hapening rigth now is that usa is full of new soccer fans thinking tath they are the new sensation (wow) , gentlemen please wake up,
on the other hand let me say tath your soccer program in all usa is going to produce very good players in the future , you have 1000,s of leages all over the country and some day you are going to harvest .

Actually the division of Continents is completely ambiguous and varies greatly depending on where you are from. The whole 'separated by water' thing isn't necessarily fact as much as it is custom in certain areas of the world. Those who prefer Europe and Asia as separate continents tend to point at plate tectonics (as they are on different shelves). So the word itself has very little meaning. Thanks for the public service announcement though....

ranked 12th reflects the progress made by the Usa, they are doing well in the wcq and reached 2 competitions finals so this is a fair position. It's good to see Brazil back on top also.

Bryan I don't think you are correct in your reasoning for the US being ranked so high. There is something fishy going on with FIFA and their relationship with the US. Why else would they say the only reason the US isn't in the top ten is because of their loss to Mexico. FIFA giving a reason for that is very fishy. I don't want to take away anything from the US I do think they should be ranked in the top 20 but all this strange behavior with FIFA is fishy and also with them wanting to bring a world cup to the US when there was one here not too long ago. Either money or some very good women are involved here.

As of right now the best team in concacaf is costa rica. Then comes the U.S.A which is closely followed by Mexico. The only reason U.S is higher up in the rankings then either of the other two teams is their win over Spain and Egypt because if they had lost all of their games in the Confederations Cup i can assure you that the U.S. would not have been in the top 40. Although even now 12 is just a bit too much to truly be correct. The U.S. should be maybe 28 or 29 but 12 is giving them too much credit. With all the teams in South America and Europe that have played better the U.S. really shouldnt even be in the top 25. Although the U.S. team has done a good job they still havent dont that much. Spain and Brazil are in their rightful places and so are Argentina and England as neither teams have played well. Although i still think Russia is also too high up it's obvious that whoever made these rankings doesnt watch soccer well enough.

Europe and Asia is one continent called Eurasia.... why because their is no body of water that separates them. That is why America is 2 Continents N.America and S.America are divided by this thing called the Panama canal. O this is a public service brought to you by Yea A Mexican.....

Derek J, The only country to win outside it's continent is Brazil. There are 5 continents in the world: Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and America. America is one continent, there is no such thing as North America being a continent, and South America being a continent!!!
