Brazil leads world rankings, US remains at No. 11
ZURICH (AP)—The United States remained at No. 11 while Brazil again was on top of the latest world rankings published Friday by FIFA.
European champion Spain closed the gap on Brazil, the Confederations Cup winner, but stayed at second. The Netherlands followed at No. 3 while world champion Italy broke a tie in last month’s rankings with Germany and now stands alone in the fourth spot.
Argentina’s victories after late goals against Peru and Uruguay in the past week helped it climb two places to No. 6, ahead of England.
Croatia rose one place to No. 8 even though it was eliminated from the World Cup after trailing England and Ukraine in its qualifying group.
The current rankings also determine which European teams will be seeded in playoffs to reach the World Cup. The seeded teams for the playoffs to decide the final four European nations going to next year’s tournament in South Africa are France, Portugal, Russia and Greece.
France moved up a place to No. 9, Portugal climbed seven spots to No. 10, Russia dropped six places to No. 12, while Greece is ranked No. 16.
They will be drawn against four non-seeded teams, led by No. 22 Ukraine, No. 34 Ireland, No. 42 Bosnia and No. 49 Slovenia.
The playoff draw will be made Monday at FIFA headquarters in Zurich. The home-and-away matches are scheduled Nov. 14 and 18.
The United States was ranked highest among the CONCACAF nations, while Mexico rose six places to No. 18. Both sealed their World Cup places this month.
Cameroon, which can clinch its place next month, heads the African nations at No. 14 after jumping 15 places. Ivory Coast, which has qualified, is next best at No. 19.
The top 20 includes 13 World Cup-qualified teams, and five more which have a second chance in playoffs. Only Croatia and the No. 15 Czech Republic are eliminated.
Denmark dropped 11 places to No. 27 despite winning its qualifying group this month.
Australia, which qualified in September, remained the best Asian confederation nation despite falling 10 places to No. 24.
New Zealand is the best Oceania nation and rose 17 places to No. 83. It is in a playoff with Asia’s Bahrain to reach the World Cup.
World Cup host South Africa dropped 12 places to No. 85, while North Korea at No. 91 is currently the lowest-ranked qualifier.
A total of 192 matches—including 147 World Cup qualifiers—counted toward the rankings, which grades countries by their results over four years.

1. They are the ones talking about dominance over us. I claim equality.Usa beat them on a neutral field (2002). Most of usa "home games" are on at best a neutral field. They come up here for the money,, so you are comparing fewer games down there.
2. Usa is quicker to send promising players to Europe than Mexico. The pay is higher for Mexican leagues than USA. It's meaningless to compare club teams! I know Spain is good now, but using club leagues as a measuring stick they should have won at least 4 world cups in the past.
3. Usa have built a program from nothing in 20 years to reach equality. This despite using at best their 4th string athletes. Allow Usa even a few bench players at the skill positions in football and basketball having been exposed to soccer and the competition with Mexico would not even be close. Mexico would have to deal with 5 guys the same size as Altidore + Davies -speed and Donovan's skill with the ball.

the win-loss record of late doesn't show one important fact:
we have never beaten mexico in mexico.
i mean, it's senseless to even talk about it.
we are still a home team against mexico. we can beat them at home, but we can't beat them home. on the other hand, they beat us at home from time to time.
on that part, they are undefeated. simple as that.
the mls was also talking big about comparisons with the mexican league, until the concacaf champions league showed up and we were put in our place.
a lot of people has eaten a lot of humble pie out of that one.
now, let's go to south africa and let's try to do well, unlike how we've done in most world cups.
we will become a lot better when we face facts and realities.

1. In 2002 Mexico coached by the same coach they have now ,lost early in the knock out round of the gold cup to South Korea. Mexico didn't even make the top 4 in a Concaf championship I think they didn't send their best team. It's a valid excuse!
2. Don't say, but they didn't lose 5-0 in the final. Using that logic: when Brazil lost to France 4-0 in the 1998 world cup final it was a worse result than Argentina 's early exit in 2002.

1. La Volpe had plenty of original excuses when Mexico lost in 2005 at Columbus. (not b-team excuse though)
2. I'd prefer the excuses to "getting mad" : Marquez 2002, Marguez 2009 and a certain incident vs Panama and Sanchez's trip after donovan's goal in 2007.
3. When mexico loses their next game to the usa do you think anyone will shake hands. Probably not since they fired Sven.
4. By the way ,Sven was given a tough job. Mexico's prelim group was way too strong ,while Costa Rica's was weak. The USA team could easily have struggled in that group.

1.Maybe the european teams that visit here ,won't complain about how cold it is in Columbus in February. It was above 50 went mexico lost at Columbus this year, and will be colder that that in South Africa for the world cup. The week before the game it was below freezing in columbus. Fifa's president thinks that Mls schedule should have more games in the winter in order to have the same schedule as other world leagues. Fifa has never regulated what temperature is too cold for play, but they have claimed Bolivia's city is too high. Yes, I know Mexico is only 7500 ft to about 12,000 for the other city in question.
2. The Usa plays a majority of it's friendlies with top european teams on the road, but I'm happy that Mexico's attitude toward scheduling friendlies with top teams is changing. They will want to use more of their best players for those games and will have to manage call ups. Perhaps they will push the clubs to change their policies on releasing top players. When that happens, those Elo rating cited in past posts will be more legitimate.

They want to play Holland and England plus a third team, but not sure if it will be European. I love the idea of Spain visiting Azteca....they should do a home and away.

Mexico also has a date with Spain in Azteca after the World Cup next year. Maybe they wont *itch and complain like little girls about altitude.

1. The us fans only make the "b team excuse" when it's valid. Gold cup 2009 and copa america 2007.No excuses for any other bad results. Mexican fans are using that b team excuse for why they only tied T&t.
2. I'm tired of hearing about the1999 confed cup and youth tournament victories. I've already shown how weak mexico's group was in confed cup 1999 and the 1990 suspension casts doubt over any future youth team victories.
3. Another poster wanted to make regional championships and the world cup+ qualifiers the only games that count in the ratings. Okay, only if Fifa allows the national teams the same latitude in calling up players from their clubs for regional championships as a world cup qualifer. It would be nice if all regional tournaments could be held at the same time. National teams would then be able to call up their best players without fear of future denials by club teams for some friendlies. If that were true, no more B team excuses!
