Beckham to return to AC Milan in January

MILAN (AP)—David Beckham will return to AC Milan on loan in January after the Italian club reached an agreement with the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer.

The England midfielder played for Milan for six months in the first half of the year. He scored two goals in 18 games and has won back his place on England’s national team.

“I need to give myself the best chance possible to make the World Cup squad and playing for Milan on loan will help me to do that,” Beckham said in a statement. “I genuinely enjoyed my time at Milan and I look forward to meeting the players and staff again.”

AC Milan and the Galaxy came to an agreement Monday after weeks of negotiations.

“We are delighted to see David Beckham back in the red-and-black shirt after his splendid experience last season,” AC Milan vice president Adriano Galliani said on the club’s Web site.

“We are sure that this period in Europe will help him make it to the next World Cup, and after that his career with Los Angeles Galaxy. We must thank them for agreeing to this deal.”

The Galaxy is currently making its first postseason appearance since Beckham joined the team. Following the conclusion of its season, Beckham will join the Galaxy for its postseason tour that ends Dec. 2.

Beckham will join AC Milan on Dec. 28 and remain with the team through the end of its season on May 16. He will rejoin the Galaxy when the summer transfer window opens in July.

“I’m committed to LA Galaxy and MLS in the long term and remain as passionate as ever about growing the game of soccer in America,” Beckham said. “I’m completely focused on ending this season on a high note with my club by winning the MLS Cup.”

The Galaxy and Chivas USA played to a 2-2 tie in their opening playoff game Sunday.

In March 2009 against Slovakia, during his time with Milan, Beckham became England’s second most capped player when he broke Bobby Moore’s record of 108 international appearances.

Currently, Beckham has played 115 internationals, with only former goalkeeper Peter Shilton ahead of him with 125.

It was England manager Fabio Capello who pushed Beckham to join a European club on loan in early 2009 to maintain his fitness during Major League Soccer’s offseason.

Originally, it was scheduled to be a three-month agreement until the start of the MLS season. But such was his success that both Beckham and Milan sought to extend the loan period until the end of the European season.

Having helped Milan reach the Champions League, Beckham returned to the Galaxy to receive a hostile reaction from some supporters and be criticized in print by teammate Landon Donovan.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder did little to smooth relations when confronted by some abusive fans during games.

Since then, Beckham has won over supporters by helping Los Angeles into the playoffs and he patched up his differences with Donovan.

If the 34-year-old Beckham does make it to next year’s tournament in South Africa, it will his fourth World Cup.

He was made the scapegoat for England’s exit in the round of 16 at the 1998 tournament in France after being sent off before the penalty shootout loss to Argentina.

Four years later in Japan and Korea, Beckham was recovering from a broken metatarsal and criticized for jumping out of a tackle just before Brazil equalized in England’s quarterfinal loss.

In 2006 at Germany, Beckham finished the tournament in tears after injury meant he was unable to play a part in the latter stages of England’s penalty shootout defeat to Portugal in the quarterfinals.

    40. Posted by Fred E Wow! Chill out Fred! You must be from England! If so, YES - please take your over-rated player back. Oh, I'm sorry - he can't make enough money for taking one or two free kicks a game in your Country so he has to play in Italy!! But then again - he is playing in Italy so that he will be ready to play for England in the 2010 World Cup! No wonder you guys haven't won a World Cup since 1966!! Maybe your Suday pub team should play for England in 2010!!!

    33. Posted by cyril - You are right about one thing - "marketing value!" He is worth more to AC Milan in marketing value than as a player. I doubt he will help them much on the pitch - but he will help them at the gate!

Ignore CK. He doesn't know what he is talking about. He's just making himself look like an idiot. Him hating soccer players in the USA. Hey I play soccer. I'm American. I love the sport. So does this mean I got to move to Mexico or something? Is he just trying to get rid of soccer in the USA? I dont know but either way he is being a total dunce. And by the way, I hate the NFL. It's pathetic. You always stop and go. Time stops, plays stop, everything stops and then continues. In soccer. It's non stop. So CK, just shut up. Soccer is going to stay in America whether you like it or not.

Blanco is equally as famous as Beckham in MLS (only). Except Beckham, hates the MLS, disrespects fans and proves everytime he is greedy.

Let this moron leave anywhere he wants, MLS doesn't need him really, he has done nothing for the league or his team. Galaxy has been a top contender with or without him.

I believe Becks still has something to offer otherwise a great team like AC Milan won't even care to know whether he stil;l exists or not. i think people have to undertsnd that. what matters in football is the overall value you are able to add to the overall success nad not necessarily whether you are the one that scored or not. And don't forgot his marketing value. so on and off the field, Beckham is a star.

    15. Posted by Rosas, or Mr. Rosas - Sure, but how often does he get a Free Kick? And what is his goal scoring percentage! Beckham has played in 115 matches for England and has only 17 goals - that is 0.1589 goals per game!! His defense is bad and he makes no effort off the ball. At 34 years of age he has slowed which is crucial since he wasn't that quick to begin with. If Beckham is the best England has in 2010 then I don't look for them to get very far! I feel he will be more of a hindrance than help.

    19. Posted by sTaR - "Beckham is so overrated its nauseating." Glad someone besides me sees that!! His entire career has been based on his ability with set pieces and free kicks! He is a poor defender and doesn't make much of an effort off the ball. In International play, Beckham has 115 Caps (Played in 115 matches for the English National team) but yet has only 17 goals!! Not many for such a "Super-Star!" Not when comparing his goal output to say Michael Owen who has 40 goals in only 89 matches. I bring up this fact and most people start screaming - Beckham is a midfielder and Owen is a forward. Well - the great Sir Bobby Charlton was a midfielder and he scored 49 goals in 106 matches! I say leave Beckham at AC Milan or LA or at home and call up Michael Owen and give him a chance to become England's leader in International goals scored!

#28, Beckham is the MLS's #1 superstar + he's up there in popularity w/ Tiger, A-Rod, Lebron, Tom Brady, and Jr. He's a big draw, and will make a team's merchandise sales go through the roof. We could argue that he's not famous over there, but he sells out Milan's stadium + jerseys.

So who cares if Beckam comes or not to any team? NO BODY cares about Beckam now. All are interested in Messi, CR9, Kaka, Fabiano, Pato, Torrez, and etc....NOT BECKAM. okay.

I'm normally a Beckham defender but England has to have better alternatives than him. Maybe as a second half sub for twenty minutes. I saw the playoff game which wasn't exactly well played by either team. He did pretty good in that game but has fallen off. He did make Milan a better team last year but I have doubts about that , too.

Beckham has got no game left. At 34 he just wants to be the face of English WC 2010.
If he has any brains, he would leave the roster spot to some deserving youngster.

I like the fact that Beckham is doing another loan. I think I would consider this as compromise between LA Galaxy and AC Milan. Just for now. But this time we might not see him until after the World Cup. Or maybe he might come back for a few games in MLS. But either way, I give Beckham the best of luck in AC Milan.

He is too much talent for the MLS, it's only bringing him down to stay here.

He needs to be up there with the better leagues, keep feeding the ball to young stars because we all know he is too old to run now..
