US entrepreneur Barton still interested in Bari

ROME (AP)—Texas-based entrepreneur Tim Barton is still interested in buying Bari once the Serie A season is finished.

Barton signed a preliminary agreement in August to purchase Bari from the Matarrese family that has controlled the club for 32 years. The bid fell apart Thursday when the Matarreses rejected a delay in the takeover process.

“Due to time limitations for completing the due diligence, we were not able to continue negotiations for the purchase of A.S. Bari,” Barton said in a statement Friday.

“We respect the Matarrese family’s desire to be focused on the team and do not want to cause any confusion or distractions. However, I am hopeful we can revisit negotiations when the season is over. Bari remains in my heart and I ask the fans to continue their support of the team.”

Barton was bidding to become the first American to own a topflight Italian club. His JMJ Holding company specializes in buying and managing luxury properties globally. He became interested in Bari while working on the development of green energy opportunities in southern Italy.

Under a preliminary agreement signed in August, Barton was due to hand over $1.46 million by the end of September, then pay the remaining $35.1 million of the deal by the end of October.

In a note that Bari CEO Salvatore Matarrese said he received Wednesday, Barton sought a 60-day delay to complete due diligence. When the initial payment didn’t come in, the Matarrese family called the deal off, saying prolonging the negotiations could affect the team’s performance.

Back in the top flight for the first time in eight years, Bari has a respectable seven points through six rounds. The club opened with a draw at four-time defending champion Inter Milan and held AC Milan to a 0-0 draw last weekend.

I still hope that the deal goes through with Bari. The team plays exceptionally well for this quick start in SERIE A. I am sure I can convince the Matarrese family to accept the delay so that Mr. Barton gets his affairs in order. Good luck! Ioan Filip, Vestal NY.

    Person:
You are out of your mind
Do you know anything about football ("soccer") besides that the "Coloumbus Crew" won the MLS Cup last year.
Bari is a strong team with good players and a great keeper!
Mr. Barton is making a great investment.
Bari played both Milan teams and they tied
1:1 v. Inter and 0:0 to Milan needless to say both of the games were played in Milan.
So learn a little about "soccer" before you make such an outlandish comment

With some changes Bari could be brought to the level of Lazio, Fiorentina engaging the supporters in the area. I am available for consulting on the matter, help is offered. Filip, Vestal NY.

There are many reason why Tim Barton purchased AS Bari so, before talking, people should read and try not to pull words right up their butt.
Bari does not have a lot of winning history as a soccer team, however, the fans are very passionate and hungry for success, the metro area is big around 1.3 million people.
Barton is also planning to purchase the beautiful Stadium and convert the surrounding area in shopping malls , hotels, facilities etc...
Most important......Barton is planning to jump start a very impressive and ambitious project that would make Puglia and Bari in particular, the leader in Europe for alternative and fotovoltaic energy....

He probably couldn't afford a Lazio or a Fiorentina.

However, if you look around Europe, especially in Germany, more rich people/businesses are getting behind smaller clubs and trying to grow them into big clubs.

Dietmar Hopp (SAP) did it with TSG Hoffenheim and Red Bull has just taken over a small club in Leipzig with designs on building it into a Bundesliga club.

I think a club like Bari is a smart move for him.

He paid less for that club than some "big clubs" pay in transfer fees for one star player.

Hmm...an interesting club to choose from. Why a smaller club like AS Bari? Are there emotional ties, or could he simply not afford one of the mid-level teams like Lazio or Fiorentina..
