Kroenke ups Arsenal stake, closes in on takeover

  • Print

LONDON (AP)—American businessman Stan Kroenke has bought his second batch of shares this week in English soccer club Arsenal, edging closer to the threshold that forces him to make a takeover bid.

The Premier League club said Thursday that Kroenke acquired 20 more shares at a cost of $281,280.

The Denver-based businessman took his stake in Arsenal to 29.9 percent on Monday by purchasing 10 shares. If he reaches 30 percent, he has to make a takeover bid.

Kroenke, who also owns the Colorado Rapids, the Denver Nuggets and the Colorado Avalanche, needs to buy 42 more shares to take his holding to 30 percent.

Alisher Usmanov is the club’s second-largest shareholder with a 25-percent stake, but the Russian businessman has not been invited to join the board of directors.

Kroenke recent shares acquisition is a demonstration of trust and confidence in Arsenal FC and this is a further boost to Wenger's style of management. All I can say is more grease to your elbow but a silverware this season wouldn't be a bad idea. Arsenal for life.

It is a good investment on Arsenal well managed and making money winning may come or may not!
All the rush in buying football club simply due to the return are good compared to other businesses which had saturated to a point of no return in short/mid term, will continue on low return or losses (for billionaires even the banks are useless these days)
Be aware buyers study the club not all clubs are going to give the necessary cash flow and profit! its still a monopoly either way.

Intresting Forbes esimated the club value around 1.2 Billion Dollars in April, depending on the exachange rate they used (1year trailing, most recent), the club value is between 650 to 850 million Pounds. Either Kroenke is getting a good deal, Forbes method is crap or information from Deloutee and Touch Forbes uses to value sports teams is junk. I vote for part informaiton part good deal. I do not see Kroenke via to take over the team unless he thought he would make at lest some money.. Although I agree I do not think he is buying the team to bleed them and only make money.

True, as a gunners' fan since 1994(after watching Arsenal bt Parma 1-0), I believe it will ease on our loss of excellent players that we always build from our excellent academy.

we do not need to be "owned" by one person to be successful. we are NOT in financial trouble. Arsene has money to buy whoever he wants but who would you buy who is for sale? The one thing that is good is that this will effectively stop anyone else talking over. Arsenal is an institution that belongs to the fans. we do not need the American model where owners like George Steinbrenner (yes, I'm a Yankee fan too - 27!!!!) and Bud Selig etc. control teams like their playthings. Leave that nonsense to the Mancs (both of them) and Liverpool. Stan seems to be more int he mould of Randy Lerner at Villa than the awful Glaziers or the mess at Liverpool. Keep us independent Stan and we will love you forever. Turn us into your bauble and wait for it all to go wrong.

I think if England are selling almost all their clubs to foreigners. The should once and for all sell THE FA, PREMIERSHIP AND EVEN LONDON CITY. Can't we find British Investors too or are they afraid or sick? Im not british but i would like them to be involved in the deals. It seems to me probably they will put the queen up for sale soon.

As a Gunners' fan, as long as Kroenke can keep the money flowing so Wenger can make the correct decisions to improve what the team looks like on the pitch, I'm all for it! I'm a gooner for life baby! ARSENAL! ARSENAL! ARSENAL!

Hey England - now you know how we Americans feel! Our politicians have been selling us out for years! Right now in America - more of our businesses are owned by foreign interests than domestic! Welcome to the World of capitalism and greed!!

You go Stan, buy the gunners. Being a Gunners fan I want to see them win. Wenger is a great manager, but the building of the new stadium and the real estate problems with sell the Highbury condos have set them back. There are two types of owners in the world, ones who buy clubs to make money and guys with MONEY...Stan is the latter...he is married to a Walton for christ sake. So Stan do it, Come on u gunners..........

There is obviously money to be made, otherwise these billionaires would not be competing with each to get to that magical 30% number.
