Former Argentina defender Caceres near death

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP)—A player from Argentina’s 1994 World Cup team is near death with a bullet in his head after resisting a carjacking.

Ramon Carrillo Hospital says Fernando Caceres is in grave condition. He was shot in the head early Sunday after a group of carjackers tried to steal his BMW in the Argentine capital.

The 40-year-old former defender played on the Argentine team that was eliminated in the second round of the World Cup in the U.S.

Argentina coach Diego Maradona visited his former teammate Monday. Caceres also played for Spanish team Zaragoza and Argentinos Juniors, River Plate, Boca Juniors and Independiente in Argentina.

he was shot in the eye, which slowed the bullet down, which is why he's not dead yet ... hope he lives.

Criminals commit crimes because they are given many chances to commit more. Laws are not tough enough and certainly do not scare those that rule by the gun. Laws need to be tougher - eye for eye, tooth for tooth. You put a bullet in someone's head, you should go through the same thing.
When the laws will become pitiless, nobody will dare committing a crime. And I am not saying this in vain.

Answer to George, Ramon was lucky that his Punks recognised him and in some sick minded rational did not want to kill a football hero. If he was Ramon the garage mechanic he would be dead, in Peru, Argentina, U.S.A., Germany, Italy, on and on and on. Lets enforce the International to demand the ultimate price for the ultimate crime. And pray for Fernando`s recovery

It`s not the B.M.W. it`s what is in your make -up of years of believing you can overcome all obsticalls to achieve your dream, " it`s my ball; I can out run him; I can out jump him and score;" I can stop these guys, but alas a gun is a powerfull opponent. My prayers are with him to make a full recovery, and my wish is that the cowards meet a timely end.

What is it with these violent fans attacking players? They should get the death penalty most certainly.

i guess that argentinian heroes are a dime a dozen.
in peru (where there is even more poverty), the great goalkeeper ramon quiroga was about to be carjacked, when they realized who he was. so they let him alone and ran away!!!

First of all, I hope he gets better soon and secondly, when they catch these SOB's, their life will turn to hell. Argentine Judicional system is very stiff. If the judge says 30 years, is 30 years, no half of that, no good behavior early dismisal BS. Is 30 years of "hell", and since the victim is who it is, they won’t last 1 or 2 years inside the penitentiary “in one piece”. I’m sick of these cowards.

I hope the guy survives and gets better soon. Hopefully he will realize that a car can be replaced but replacing a human life is not so easy! I've never seen any BMW worth dieing for.
