Painful memories drive Real on for Barca showdown

  • Print

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid have the formidable attacking threat of Cristiano Ronaldo back in their armory at the perfect time as they travel to Camp Nou on Sunday for the eagerly-anticipated 'El Clasico' against champions Barcelona.

Real hold a one-point lead over Barcelona at the top but need no reminder of the quality of their opponents after losing the last Clasico 6-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu back in May when Lionel Messi tore them to shreds.

Messi is a doubt for this game with a thigh strain picked up last Saturday and did not play in Tuesday's 2-0 Champions League win over Inter Milan although he was on the substitutes' bench along with Zlatan Ibrahimovic who also has a thigh problem.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola says he is optimistic over Messi but must decide whether to risk the star from the start or leave him on the bench while his opposite number Manuel Pellegrini has a similar dilemma over Ronaldo who played for the first time in two months with a 20-minute outing in the 1-0 Champions League win over FC Zurich.

Ronaldo had missed ten games with ankle trouble but declared himself fit for his first Clasico against the team who left him in tears at the end of last season by beating his then Manchester United side in the Champions League final.

"I want to play in El Clasico if I feel good, although that is the responsibility of the coach," said Ronaldo. "I didn't score (against Zurich) but I hope to do so in the next game (against Barcelona). It doesn't bother me if it's 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1, the important thing is to win."

Real lost both games against their foes last season falling 12 points behind Barcelona after the first Clasico in mid-December before the disastrous 6-2 loss which all but wrapped up the title for Barca.

"If I had lost 6-2 in the last match against a big rival I would be going out for revenge but Madrid aren't like that," said Barcelona defender Dani Alves. "I think they will come full of respect. They know it is difficult to play here even more so having lost that way last time."

Real have not thrilled their fans too much this season but have amassed 28 points out of a possible 33 to make their best start in 17 years.

"Of course they are the leaders why wouldn't they be after spending 270 million euros?" said Guardiola.

Money has bought Real the talent of Brazilian Kaka, Spain playmaker Xabi Alonso and Ronaldo who will all be ready for their first Clasico experience, while Barcelona have a host of homegrown players such as Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique who have grown up with Real as the enemy.

While the Clasico takes centre stage in Spain this weekend the teams below the top two concentrate on trying to prove they are genuine title alternatives.

Valencia are one such team, lying four points behind leaders Real, and host Real Mallorca on Saturday targeting a fifth straight league win.

"For us the best thing in the Clasico would be a draw so both teams drop two points," said Valencia forward David Villa. "It does not make sense for us to talk about being title contenders in November."

Villa has scored nine goals already this season to top the goal-scoring charts and could have been playing in the Real-Barcelona game had Valencia not stood so firm in the summer when both teams wanted his services.

Sevilla lie three points behind Real in third and should get the three points at home to bottom side Malaga on Saturday and then see which of the top two, if not both, drops points.

"If we want to be competing for the league we can't slip up at home," said defender Manuel Lolo. "At least one of the big two (Barcelona and Real) will drop points and we need to make it count."

Atletico began the season with hopes of a title charge but have had their worst since 1954 with seven points from the first 11 matches leaving them third from bottom.

New coach Quique Sanchez Flores seeks his first league win in charge at home to Espanyol on Sunday to try and ease fears the club could suffer a shock relegation like in 2000.

Fixtures on Saturday:

Sporting Gijon v Villarreal (1700 GMT), Valencia v Real Mallorca (1900 GMT), Sevilla v Malaga (2100 GMT)

Sunday (all 1600 GMT unless stated)

Valladolid v Tenerife, Getafe v Xerez, Racing Santander v Deportivo La Coruna, Almeria v Athletic Bilbao, Real Zaragoza v Osasuna, Barcelona v Real Madrid (1800 GMT), Atletico Madrid v Espanyol (2000 GMT)

c'mon ppl. a player's greatness is not measured by just his dribbling or free kick skills. its much more than that. yes CR and messi have great skill in their arsenal but you shuldn't forget the other players on a team that helps them do what they do. shuldn't forget the defenders that let them stay up there in the front and do their stuff. shuldn't forget the midfeilders that feed them the ball with precision time and time again. greatness as i said is not just a measure of skill, but of maturity, leadership, humbleness, and a passion for the game. gerrard, raul, makelele, sissoko, players that are as important to the team as some of the much more heralded players.

I love Tennis.. but HATE the EPL.. it's funny how people are so funny calling a tactical and technical skilled level of play BORING when one can count REALLY count how many long BALLS.. or in another WORD DIRECT ATTACK.. or it's simpler NAME "KICK and RUN" EPL GAME.. that is TENNIS at is BEST but TENNIS is TENNIS EPL is not TENNIS.. it's FOOTBALL

    La liga is good
    SERIA A is good
    Bung is good
even when able to see French 1 it's good
but the EPL.. wow ( i see due to FOX and ESPN show it because it's spoken english game not meaning it better .. if they could show OTHER LEAGUE wow.. it would be nice in the STATES ) not making it PAYER VIEW.. all SOuth america is PAYer VIEW .. wonder if this done only to show ENGLISH speaking .. wonder..
but the bottom Line EPL.. is a TENNIS match that is using the WRONG BALL..
EPL do not have the BALLS to play good futebol... that is a fact..

Yes both players have great influence in the proceedings of the game, both are play makers. The switch real may have somewhat slowed down the possible contribution by CR because it takes abit of time to suit to the rythm of play in a new team. CR has a slight erge.

Bryan (#55)- I don't know what you are talking about. Both Messi and Ronaldo have great skill, no doubt. It's what they do with that skill that makes them stand out. Messi has better vision and speed than Ronaldo and fights for the ball. Ronaldo is a strong player, but can't defend, and has become more of a free kick specialist than a complete player, which Messi is.

The ball does not run through Ronaldo at Madrid. He was a spectator in today's game against Tenerife. Messi is a spark plug, and always make things happen for his teammates, including Ibracadabra.

If you've ever seen great players play before, you know that Ronaldo and Messi are in their class. They are both young, and have bright futures. I just think Messi is more mature, level headed, and has more class than Ronaldo. Although it's too early to say, I think Messi is on course to be one of the best footballers to ever play the game. May he and Ronaldo remain healthy for the years to come.

In terms of skill and definition Ronaldo is the better player no question. Messi is a great player but what he can do is very limited compared to what Ronaldo can do. Although obviously the ball almost always runs through Ronaldo at Real so he has more opportunited than say Messi who doesnt get the ball as much as he used to because Ibrahimovic is there as well.

Haa.....ha.....haa.....very lucky 2 comment below, if you don't know about football and reality, you must shut up your mouth, you don't know about the best player. the real best player is Ronaldo, he can score in everything likes free kick, long range shoot, good header (while Messi and Ibra scores more goals only in a box). Last 3 seasons, Ronaldo score many goals for help Man U, Won EPL 3 times, Won CL, and reach Final CL last season, Assist Fifa World Club Cup Last year, have many team/ individuals award and more. While Messi last 3 seasons, only great season last year, Won only 1 La Liga (2 wons for Real Madrid), Won 1 CL, Spanish Cup, have less award than Ronaldo's award achievement and other. While Ibra is nothing can compare, only wons 3 times Italian League, not good in CL last 3 seasons. talk about fact not only you hear. Still no one can compare perfect player like Ronaldo at this time, he already award Fifa World Of Player while Messi not and Ibra is nothing.

Does who say Messi si more efficient and gives more assits have not watched him closely. Messi is giving the ball ti Ibra now in small games just to welcome him. If you have watched games where Messi is put on the spotlight, he doesnt assist. Most of his assist come by chance or when he is almost loosing the ball. Dont say he is humble and @#$% like that. A humble player is known when he is in a team which is not performing and when his salary has not been increased. A humble player is Kaka. Do you remember when Ronnie was untransfeable and all smiles? What happened when the sun stopped shining? Just wait untill Messi doesnt qualify for World cup and Barca doesnt win every game so easily. You will know is only human:)

I totally agree with comment 50, cox it's what we all see when we watch the games. Messi is more efficient while CR7 plays for himself. Messi assists more than any other player (so humble), but CR7 tries to score himself. Messi doesn't shoot from any place, but CR7 would shoot from any place he gets, (no matter how off target the ball goes, eg last CL Final match) CR7 shouts at the referees and coaches (eg: he shouted at SAF when he was subsitituted), but Messi won't. Actually, Messi should have the award last year too. But this year, no one is even cloze to Messi.

All those who commented on how good Ronaldo is compared to Messi should start a club called Brainless know nothing about football club. You compare discipline on and off the field, Messi comes out first. You compare the number of assist, Messi comes out first. You compare the number of wasted shots at goal, Ronaldo comes out ahead. You compare influence on the field, Messi plays from the middle and Ronaldo plays from the wing. The best players always play in the middle of the field where it is most competitive, and cramped.
