Winter Camping in Central Ohio

Camping is fun no matter when you go. There is just something about getting away from the daily grind and exploring nature.

Camping is also one of the most affordable vacations or weekend getaways. The disappointing thing is, most people don't consider winter camping very often especially in the central Ohio area. This is something that should be explored more often since there is so much to see and do.

Here are some good campgrounds to consider in the central Ohio area, if you are thinking about a winter camping trip:

Alum Creek

Alum Creek is a great choice for winter camping in central Ohio. They offer heated showers and a dump station that is open during the winter months. The only amenity that is not available during the winter is the camp store. Alum Creek is a great place to go if you are looking for a campground that offers some great hiking trails and some winter scenery. Alum Creek also has Fantasy of Lights to enjoy during the holiday season. It is important to note that until March 31, 2012, camping is local sale only.

Deer Creek

Deer Creek is also another great option in the central Ohio area for winter camping. Be sure to take a look at the campground map since there are only two wash stations open during certain months and there is a limited amount of sites available. The camp store is also closed during the winter months. Group camping is available in the winter, which is great for those planning a cub scout or other groups that are having a hard time finding a group outing for the colder seasons. Deer Creek also has sledding, ice fishing, ice skating, and snowmobiling available to participate in while camping.

Hocking Hills

Hocking Hills is another place accessible to the central Ohio area for some adventurous winter camping. Access into the campground is quite narrow, so if you have a larger camper you will need to be cautious entering, especially during the winter months. There is also some construction going on near Old Man's Cave. While at Hocking Hills you can go ice fishing or check out one of the nearby craft and antique shops. The camp store and other amenities are available during the winter months at Hocking Hills.

It is always good to check ahead before heading off for a camping trip in the wintertime in the central Ohio area. Often the campsites can be limited, and you will want to make sure that the amenities you are looking for are available for the dates of your visit. It is possible though to find a campground that will provide just as much enjoyment in the winter months, as they do in the summer months.

Who knows, you might even discover something new at a campground that you have visited before, but never in the wintertime.
