Four Places to Go Dog Sledding in Michigan
Are you looking for a unique winter sports experience this year? Why not consider booking a dog sledding adventure in Michigan. Many of the state's dog sledding trips are family friendly and may be customized to meet the needs of your group.
Here are four facilities that you may want to consider:
1. Double JJ Resort
The Double JJ Resort is located in Rothbury and makes a perfect destination for families with small children. It features dog sledding trips as well as an indoor water park, horseback riding, snow tubing and horse-drawn sleigh rides. The dog sledding trips are available, weather permitting, and may include mushing lessons. A particularly good time to visit is the last weekend in December. During that time the facility hosts a family-friendly New Year's Eve party that includes dog sledding, snow tubing, musical entertainment, games and contests. You may opt to attend the party only for $49 per person or stay overnight for an additional fee. Advance reservations are needed.
2. Last Chance Kennel
The Last Chance Kennel is located at Russ-Stick Acres in Mancelona. Dog sledding rates start at $250 per person. Guests are allowed to drive the team and each trip covers approximately 6 miles. It is open Monday through Saturday from November through April. Trips typically start at 10 a.m. and last a minimum of four hours in duration. There are no rider age or weight restrictions posted at this time.
3. Shemhadar Kennels
Shemhadar Kennels is located in Cadillac. Children must be 3 years of age or older to participate. There is also a rider weight restriction. Trips may be customized and range in duration from one to four hours. Advance reservations are needed and may be made by phone. To get you in the mood there are a variety of informative podcasts posted on the company's website.
4. Nature's Kennel
Nature's Kennel Iditaord Sled Dog Racing and Adventures is located in McMillan. Dog sledding trips are offered from December through March and tend to sell out very quickly. Advance reservations are a must and the farther out you make them, the better. What I like about this company is the originality of its overnight dog sledding trips. In addition to what you would normally expect on a multi-night dog sledding adventure, you may opt to add culinary related events like winery tours, specialty cheeses and locally made brats into the mix. Rates vary per package selection, but tend to start at $450 per person.
My family enjoys winter sports and has traveled extensively.
