Top 5 Places to Go Downhill Skiing in the Northwest Region of Michigan
When you mention downhill skiing destinations, many folks start rattling off locations in Colorado without so much as a thought to the over 40 ski resorts in Michigan—and that's a shame.
Granted, Michigan is no Colorado, but it has a beauty and charm worth experiencing. Many of Michigan's ski resorts even allow children 8 years of age or younger to ski for free when accompanied by a paying adult. To help you give the state even more consideration, I've compiled a list of the best downhill skiing places the Northwest Region has to offer.
Here they are:
1. Boyne Mountain
There are two Boyne Mountain locations to choose from. One is in Boyne Falls and features terrain parks, 60 downhill trails and a vertical drop of 500 feet. The other location is in Harbor Springs and offers 55 downhill trails, two terrain parks and a vertical drop of 552 feet. Both are open year-round and lift tickets are interchangeable. Lift ticket prices start at $22 per person. The least expensive times to go are in the evenings after 4 p.m.
2. Shanty Creek Resorts
Shanty Creek Resorts is located in Bellaire and features 53 downhill ski trails, four terrain parks, horse-drawn sleigh rides, cross country skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, snow tubing and a 450-foot vertical drop. Children 8 years old or younger ski for $5 each or free if you also spend the night. Lift ticket prices for older children start at $9 per person. There are all sorts of special deals that run during the week, so I'd suggest that you plan for a midweek stay.
3. Caberfae Peaks Ski and Golf Resort
Are you budget conscious? The Caberfae Peaks Ski and Golf Resort in Cadillac may be your best bet. Ski and stay packages start at $69 per person. It features two terrain parks, cross country ski trails, 34 trails and a vertical drop of 485 feet. It is open daily, year-round.
4. Nub's Nob Ski Resort
The Nub's Nob Ski Resort is located in Harbor Springs and offers visitors 53 downhill skiing trails and a 427-foot vertical drop. Lift ticket prices start at $17 per person. The most economical time to go is midweek after 4 p.m.
5. Crystal Mountain Resort and Spa
The Crystal Mountain Resort and Spa is located in Thompsonville and features 45 downhill trails, a 375-foot vertical drop, three terrain parks, cross country trails and a super course. It is open daily, year-round. Lift ticket prices start at $15 per person.
My family enjoys winter sports and has traveled extensively.
