Top 5 Places to Go Dog Sledding in Minnesota
Are you contemplating a dog sledding adventure this year? Why not consider Minnesota as one of your destinations. There are multiple dog sledding facilities to choose from.
Here are my picks for the top five:
1. Wintergreen Dog Sledding Lodge
The Wintergreen Dog Sledding Lodge is located in Ely. It features a series of all inclusive dog sledding trips including ones that involve winter camping, cross country skiing and visits to a polar bear nursery. It is the only facility that I know of in the area that includes baby polar bears in its dog sledding packages. For me, that makes it a stand out. Trips are available December through March, weather permitting. Advance reservations are required. Prices vary but tend to average $1,275 per person for a six-night stay.
2. White Wilderness Sled Dog Adventures
The White Wilderness Sled Dog Adventures is located in Isabella and includes overnight lodging in your choice of a yurt or lodge. You also have the option of adding ice fishing to your dog sledding trip. Rates vary based on the package selected, but typically start at $1,400 per person, double occupancy. Trips run December through March, but the best time to visit is January.
3. Gunflint Lodge
The Gunflint Lodge is located in Grand Marais and offers all-inclusive dog sledding packages that may also include cross-country skiing, skate skiing, ice fishing, snowshoeing, moose viewing and sleigh rides. Lodging options include cabins and cottages with fireplaces, private saunas and hot tubs. All-inclusive package rates vary, but tend to start at $597 per person for a three-night stay.
4. Cragun's Resort and Hotel on Gull Lake
Cragun's Resort and Hotel on Gull Lake in Brainerd is a good option for families with small children. It offers short dog sledding trips for $10 per person to hotel guests. The resort is open year-round and also features downhill skiing, cross country skiing, ice fishing, horse-drawn trolley rides, ice skating and snowmobiling on-site. Rates vary, but tend to start at $99 per person for a lake view room with a fireplace.
5. Boundary Country Trekking
Couples might prefer the dog sledding trips available through Boundary Country Trekking in Grand Marais. Packages include overnight accommodations at the Poplar Creek Guesthouse Bed and Breakfast. You also have the option of adding additional elements like a Mongolian firepot dinner served in a Mongolian yurt, lantern lit sleigh rides and cross country skiing to your trip. Alternate lodging is available as well. Trips are available throughout December and package rates start at $360 per person.
My family enjoys winter sports and has traveled extensively.
