Best 5 Places to Go Ice Skating in the Hudson Valley
Are you looking for a place to take your family ice skating in the Hudson Valley region of New York? I know of five places that you may want to consider. I have been to each and consider them top notch.
Here they are:
1. Mohonk Mountain House
Mohonk Mountain House is one of my favorite places to go ice skating in the Hudson Valley. It is located on Mountain Rest Road in New Paltz and features a 9,375-square foot ice skating pavilion. One of the nicest parts of the pavilion is the towering stone fireplace where you can go to get warmed up. It stands 39 feet tall and really puts you in the holiday mood. Ice skate rentals are available for a modest fee and the use of the rink is free to the hotel's guests.
2. Bear Mountain State Park
Bear Mountain State Park is another one of my preferred places to go ice skating. It is located on Seven Lakes Drive in Bear Mountain. It features a large outdoor ice skating rink that is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting. There is an $8 parking fee charged, plus a $3 to $5 per person fee for using the rink. Skate rentals and skate sharpening are available on premise for an additional charge.
3. Fancher-Davidge Park
Fancher-Davidge Park is a nice place to go especially if you want to fit some holiday shopping in as well. It features a large lake and admission is free. It is located on Lake Avenue in Middletown. You can skate in the evenings as well, and there are plenty of stores and restaurants nearby.
4. Taconic State Park
Taconic State Park is located on Rudd Pond Road in Millerton and features both Copake Falls and Rudd Pond. Ice skating is allowed on Rudd Pond, providing the ice is thick enough. It is open daily, year-round, from sunrise to sunset. Admission is free, and you will need to bring your own gear.
5. Lake Taghkanic State Park
Lake Taghkanic State Park is located on State Route 82 in Ancram. It is a 1,568-acre park with a 156-acre lake that is perfect for ice skating. During the winter it is open from sunrise to just before sunset. There are comfort stations located on both the west and east beaches of the lake where you can warm up. The park's $8 entrance fee is typically waived during the winter, and you must bring your own ice skates.
My family enjoys winter sports and we have been ice skating throughout the Hudson Valley.
