Benefits of biking to work: Reasons to ditch the car
We often overlook how beneficial biking is to us and the environment in which we live. Listed below are 10 reasons that will make you forget about your car and choose your bicycle as your primary means of transportation to work.
1. Environmentally Friendly
Bicycling to work reduces noise and air pollution. Driving a car is the largest source of air pollution in the United States. Cars emit harmful pollutants in the air, and this is not good for the environment. Bikes do not emit pollutants in the air we breathe; therefore, riding a bicycle to work is a great wait to promote a sustainable environment.
2. Saves Money
I easily save over $200 a month on gas biking to work. Ditching the car and riding a bike also significantly reduces the amount of money I would have had to spend on car maintenance. Bikes have to be repaired from time to time, too, but they don't have as many expensive parts as cars.
3. Improves Physical Fitness
Riding a bike has helped my physical appearance. I've noticed clearer skin, a toned body, and a decrease in my weight. I also have more energy to make it through the day.
4. Improves Mental Health
Bicycling has made a positive impact on my mental well-being. My mind functions better, I'm less stressed, and I am always in a happy mood.
5. Avoids Congested Traffic
You spend a lot of time dealing with rush hour traffic when driving a car. This could result in being late for work, getting into road rage fights, accidents, etc. Biking to work is the way to go because you there aren't as many bikes on the road as cars resulting in less confusion.
6. Parking Advantages
No more wasting time searching for an open parking space. Bicyclers get VIP parking at the front of the building. You also won't have to worry about the typical parking lot accidents that may occur like the wind blowing a buggy on your car leaving you with a hefty dent, the person beside you with the kid who swings the door open and hits your car, or the person talking on his cell phone and accidentally rear-ends you.
7. Saves Time
You are probably thinking, "How could bicycling save time when a car is obviously faster?" Well, it depends on the route you take and the time you take it. Biking allows you to save time in high traffic areas. Parking at the front of buildings also reduces the time it takes to get inside stores and out of busy parking lots.
8. Enjoying the View
Riding a bike to work allows you to appreciate the beauty Mother Nature has to offer. You can get a longer glance at things that catch your attention than you can in the car. You can also enjoy the wonderful smell of spring and get fresh air on every journey.
9. Reduces Car Theft
Thieves don't want the parts off your bike, but they do want what's inside your car and even what's on the outside. Having a bicycle as your main source of transportation means you won't have to worry about broken car windows, or stolen merchandise and car parts. This eliminates having to file insurance claims, and spending money on repairs or a rental car.
10. Meet New People
Whether you join a bicycle club or meet friends on the street, bicycling is a great way to interact with others. You can bond with neighbors while riding through the community or learn new tips and technique about biking from members of a bicycling club. You could even start a bicycling club with your co-workers. After work, the club could spend an hour or two biking around town.
