Tour-Armstrong loses on the road but wins media battle

  • Print

PARIS, July 26 (Reuters) - Lance Armstrong’s gamble to return to the Tour de France after a four-year break may not have been a complete success sports-wise but the American easily won the media battle.

To finish on the Tour podium at nearly 38 years old is a formidable achievement, especially after such a long time off the bike, yet Armstrong had looked so untouchable during his seven-year reign on the race the result was relatively disappointing.

Armstrong, third overall, acknowledged winner Alberto Contador was the best rider in this Tour, even though life in the Astana team may not have been easy for two exceptional athletes with strong characters and conflicting ambitions.

“I am happy and overall damned pleased how it turned out. Alberto was far superior than any riders and Andy (Schleck) rode a very consistent and smart race,” Armstrong told reporters after the penultimate stage on the Mont Ventoux.

“For an old fart coming in here and getting on the podium with these young guys, was not so bad,” he joked.

Luxembourg’s Andy Schleck, 24, was second overall thanks to his consistency in the climbs.

But Armstrong was far from ready to bow to the up and coming generation of riders.

“I’ll be better prepared in 2010,” he warned in a news conference in the last week of the race.

OVERDUE POPULARITY

While the Texan probably hoped for a better final result on a sporting level, Armstrong also returned to cycling to promote his foundation against cancer, Livestrong, and his Tour was a total success in that respect.

Livestrong bracelets and t-shirts were all over the place on the race and the most successful Tour rider even succeeded in gaining a long overdue popularity with the French public, who have considered him arrogant in the past.

“People say I’m not the same rider I was four years ago,” said Armstrong. “They probably like that and it pleases me too. It’s the best way to sum up the situation,” he said.

Armstrong’s return to the sport, announced last September, was probably a little rushed and a crash in the Tour of Castille and Leon in March hampered his build-up to the Tour.

As a result, he lost ground on Contador and Schleck in the mountains, but was also humbled by the Spaniard in the individual time trials, which were for a long time Armstrong’s specialty.

“I have work to do and that starts in August. I will review my season from calendar to training to equipment and see what I will change,” he said.

The American will have a new tool to achieve his goal of winning an eighth Tour. He announced after Thursday’s time trial in Annecy he was leaving Astana to launch his own team sponsored by electronics firm RadioShack.

The move could help him have a whole team at his service, although the list of riders has yet to be confirmed.

The question is whether he can win the 2010 Tour without turning back into the Armstrong of old in the eyes of his new French fans.

Lance, your great.. the best ever. as you say.. the individual rider only wins greatness with the help of fine teamates. Greatness also only comes with humility... of which you nothing of.

The French didn't like Armstrong in the past because they thought he was arrogant? That's bloody rich. Monsieur Pot, meet Monsieur Kettle... In my estimation, ALL top-level athletes are arrogant, to some extent, or at least supremely confident in their abilities, which they've developed through working their buns off to get to that top level. Lance Armstrong has more cause than most for arrogance/self-confidence, because even before he won his first maillor jeune, he'd already won the most important battle ANYONE could ever face. And now he's riding so others similarly afflicted can have a chance. Vive Lance toujours!

jsaez@ - if i recall but can't locate your post now and the topic, when you admitted that Contador was at fault in dropping Kloden - that prove's how a poor team player Contador is. Yes, he is a good individualist and really strong, but let us see if he have a chance by riding alone.

wernercj, Armstrong proved that given enough training and support he still have the power to accelerate on the mountains, and only Contador and A. SCHLECKS dropped Armstrong...

Now we start hearing about all the dirty tricks Armstrong was playing against Contador behind the race. Like how Contador found no one from his team waiting for him at the hotel lobby right before the time -trial at Annecy (Armstrong had send the assistants to pick up his wife, children and friends at the airport,), so Alberto had to call his own brother for a ride. Or Armstrong always sleeping in a hotel suite while Contador had to share his room. Or how Armstrong and "his friends" occupied Alberto's seat in the team bus after Alberto's attack in the mountains. Or Bruyneel's car following Armstrong during the time trial instead of helping Contador (the lider of the race). And this is just the beginning...Armstrong is a great athlete, but a man with two faces.

What's ironic here is that Lance seems to have won some new fans in France while losing some in the US. There wasn't as much coverage this time around (other than "Lance is in 3rd"), but the back-and-forth and tension between LA and AC probably tarnished his reputation here a little. Plus, he didn't win, so casual watchers may be disappointed by it. In any case, next year is probably his last on a bicycle. It will be interesting to see what type of team he puts together, and if he can snare someone willing to set aside yellow jersey aspirations in 2010 who can be a challenger to Contador and Schleck in the future.

Next year's tour should be full of suspense and drama. I am a long-time Lance fan, but I think he was less than gracious with his teammate Contador, including not even congratulating him or acknowledging him on the podium today. Bad form. Contador--lose the "pistol salute" and smoke LA next year. Be a good teammate and learn English. Fight with LA on all fronts and media for every constituency. But seriously, lose the pistol salute--it's horrible.

Well here is my 2 bits:
This years TDF is the one of the most exciting ever!!! You have Astana "The Dream Team" I call it. The amount of skill and talent is unserpast. A reported stated that Lance "broght more to the tour in 4 days than past 4 years". That is amazing and hats off to all that make this ride to the end, period!

With a man like Lance in the race it would be like having Michael Jordan in the Championship. He has presents that only Lance can bring! He bring a heighten sense to everbodys game and brings out the heart of lions in men. Do not under estimate a lion with determination!

To think that A.C. is going to ride all over him and can just ride off on his own is a illusion. True he is a younger rider with great abilities and trying to prove his worth.

As a "Team" I would be unwise to give the Green light to both go for it! There is still alot of time left for alot of challenges ahead. You could run the risk of pushing them too hard for that # 1 spot and have any of them fall off. The best way to go about it is to have the whole team place in the top 3 over all and put them in best over all and gain a much larger gap from everybody else and once that is obvious that will happen. Give the men the Green light to push it is as long as it does not run risk of the over all top 3 or 4 for the team! If it does run risk you have to pull them back in and set the team goal and leave no man behind!

Now that would be something huh? Unthinkable?

Interesting lack of knowledge by bbozo30. In fact - LA met Kristen at 'Ride for the Roses', which he started (as a cancer survivor support charity) after he had returned to racing. I don't know, maybe there was some weird rift in the space-time continuum, but I would think it's kind of hard to say she "stood by him" (assuming you mean his cancer treatment) when they had never met until he was in remission.

Please - enlighten us as to how this time shift may occur. I think both Lt. Laforge and Mr. Spock would be interested in your explanation (covering my age there ;-)

As for the rest: Love him or hate him or just not care, it sure has made this TdF a bit more entertaining, which is what pro sports really is - ENTERTAINMENT. Those who disagree, well, go shave your legs and dither about the 7 grams saved by switching to titanium screws. As for me, I'm just going for a ride.

Favoring a competitor and encouraging them to achieve success is neither an obligation nor a license to disparage other participants. Such perverse remarks merely highlight the pathetic struggle for notice of a needy ego.

Hummmm it's a race winners and loosers --- Both are winners one being Contador did we all forget his win in 2007 now let's all put ourselves in this young man's shoes. Being denied to race again in 08' would you not have the fire burning in you to go for a win in 2009 do you not have that right to!! I say yes. Now Mr. Lance who decided to call it done after 7 wins and puts up the bike for 3yr such years. How much of it is it his right to say " the win should be mines for 2009 I want to make a come back." and poor Mr. Levi the work horse of them all-- has he not given his soul to both riders. Does he not have a dark side to want a win under his belt??? Were is the brotherly love here hummm should one with the most wins now think that others on my team should have a go at it while they are riding good before they might have a miss-hap. Accidents be fall us all! So why not share the wealth we can all look good. You help so now I help you... That is team spirt!! Deep down could one of the three be think kind of selfishly??? That is the real question of this team.

No matter who wins, Contador or Armstrong, the winner should give credit to their rivalry for helping push him to victory..

And as for Lance's return and the associated drama, I personally think it makes for a much more entertaining TDF than it would be without it. What a storyline!

Well said "Funk", that's the first down to earth comment I had read on these posts; and to "wemercj"'s post, who gives a $hit what REAL riders think on Velo news . . . , do I need to read that so I can have my mind made up, or know what I should think of the whole thing?! To say the race would be better with out Lance, how so, because you dislike drama or something---then blame the reporter's! How about watch and enjoy the whole thing unfold and we will all see who is the best, strongest, fastest . . . wether its Lance or not!
