Armstrong in hot water over Tour clothing breach

LONDON, July 26 (Reuters) - Lance Armstrong and his team RadioShack will face disciplinary proceedings for breaching riders’ clothing regulations during the Tour de France, the International Cycling Union (UCI) said in a statement on Monday.

The American, who was diagnosed with cancer before going on to win seven successive Tours from 1999-2005 and returning to the sport in 2009, was riding the famous race for the last time and attempted to wear a black Livestrong shirt instead of his team’s red and grey strip during the final day on Sunday.

The 38-year-old was halted from publicising his Livestrong foundation by wearing the new jerseys with the number 28—a reference to the estimated 28 million people living with cancer — which delayed the start of the race, though he did wear it on the podium at the end.

“RadioShack’s incorrect behaviour led to a 20-minute delay to the start of the final stage, which could have disrupted the televised coverage of the race, placing the Commissaires under the obligation to impose a fine on each rider and the team managers,” the statement read.

“The UCI regrets that an initiative for a cause as worthy as the fight against cancer was not coordinated beforehand with the Commissaires and organisers of the event. This could have been done whilst remaining within the rules.”

RadioShack’s Belgian boss Johan Bruyneel, a former rider, was unhappy about the decision and is also in trouble with the UCI for the following comments posted on his Twitter site: “To be a race commissaire you don’t need brains, but only know the rules.”

“The UCI also deplores the declarations made by Mr Johan Bruyneel who gravely offended all the Commissaires working in cycling. His remarks are utterly unacceptable, and Mr Bruyneel will be called upon to answer for his comments before the UCI Disciplinary Commission,” the statement added.

The UCI added that any fines levied as a result of this matter would be donated to the LSC (Ligue suisse contre le cancer—Swiss Cancer League).

Lance... extremely talented & dedicated bike racer who was a pleasure to watch during his prime. I'm happy to admit that I learned plenty about training & dedication & cadence & courage & other things by watching him. Unfortunately, he's an ego-pig who just HAS to be the center of attention all the time. Very sad.

I bet there are other bike racers from other teams and other countries who have "causes" they'd like to promote, but they don't hold up the start of a race by 20 minutes by showing up in non-approved uniforms. The rule is: show the race organizers what you're going to wear and get it approved, don't just show up wearing whatever you feel like wearing. I bet permission would have been granted if they had asked; it's just totally self-serving for Lance et al to make such a spectacle.

This sort of behavior is probably part of the reason that Team Radioshack isn't invited to the Vuelta this year, and it will be looked upon as really stupid if the Tour organizers decide to not-invite them to the Tour next year.

Sounds like very clever marketing coup on behalf of LA and RadioShack team. Break the rule and get UCi and all media all worked up about it and ...

Exactly :) clever again however walking a fine line. Rules are rules and they are all adults to know better.

Don't they have better things to do instead of going after Lance and Team Radioshack? Grow up UCI! It was done to promote a worthy cause and NOT with the intent to promote Lance himself. Makes me crazy!

Could the UCI sound any more EURO? Reminds me of the limp-wristed "stern" expressions of condemnation that the do-nothing Euros issued in response to the ongoing genocide in Bosnia.

As they dithered and puffed up their chests with spineless bravado, an unthinkable tragedy took place in their own backyard, some 60 years after they vowed "never again".

Europe is in terminal decline, full of pomp and circumstance, but ultimately lacking in substance.

Oh, and by the way, the UCI was right to criticize team Radio Shack -- they broke the rules.
