Reports: Spanish police uncover doping circle

VALENCIA, Spain (AP)—Spanish police have reportedly detained up to a dozen people after uncovering a doping ring.

According to news agency Efe on Tuesday, Spain’s Guardia Civil raided homes, pharmacies and clinics linked to Walter Viru, the former Kelme cycling team doctor. Police discovered EPO and growth hormones in Valencia, Barcelona, Murcia and Granada.

Reports said one of the homes raided belongs to race walker Francisco Fernandez, who took Olympic silver in 2004. Fernandez issued a statement denying any involvement, saying “I have never worked with this doctor and I have never had anything to do with doping.”

Viru was a former colleague of Eufemiano Fuentes, who was arrested in relation to cycling-related doping scandal Operation Puerto.

Could you imagine what would happen if the NFL conducted regularly scheduled and random, out of season drug tests? Could they field a single team? Players weigh 280 libs, bench 500 lbs, run the 40 in 4.6 with 6% body fat. And they try to get you to believe that they got that way just by working out. Uh, ok!

oh, a race walker was involved. so it isnt just a cycling problem. unfortunately, performance enhancing drugs are spread through sports like a cancer. it is a shame, but it is everywhere. not just cycling as some seem to think. i guess in the end, it is what it is. enjoy it for what it is, and go out and ride. doing it is a lot more fun than watching it anyway.

Yeah Puerto was cycling related, and tennis related and football related according to the doctor himself - but of course the authorities in those sports care more about keeping them out of the news than catching the cheats !
