Landis in the hunt in Catskills race

WINDHAM, N.Y. (AP)—Floyd Landis joked around at the start with other riders at the Tour of the Catskills, then showed he still has a kick.

Landis completed the first stage of the three-day event in the lead pack of 35 riders, finishing in 3 hours, 19.23 seconds on a sun-splashed Saturday. That left him tied for sixth, 34 seconds behind leader Aurelien Passeron of France.

Landis began the 80-mile ride 24 seconds behind Passeron, who won Friday’s prologue and retained the yellow jersey to gain another 10 seconds. Passeron led Cameron Cogburn of Cambridge, Mass., by 26 seconds.

Sunday’s final stage, dubbed the Mountaintop Classic, is another 80-mile segment that includes a climb up Platte Clove in what is known as the “Devil’s Kitchen” leg. It begins and ends in Hunter.

Riding unattached but wearing the jersey of the Farm Team, a developmental team in northeastern New York, Landis stopped briefly to chat with teammates after finishing and then rode away without taking questions from reporters.

Landis was stripped of the 2006 Tour de France title for testing positive for high levels of testosterone. He denied that he’d doped until this spring, when he admitted to using drugs to gain a competitive edge. He also has made doping claims against seven-time Tour winner Lance Armstrong.

Landis’ allegations have sparked a federal investigation into cheating in pro cycling, and prosecutors have subpoenaed documents from a 2004 case in which a company tried to prove Armstrong used performance-enhancing drugs.

Armstrong has denied using such drugs and has never tested positive.

Despite Landis’ admissions, few cyclists are ready to ostracize him.

Before Saturday’s stage got under way, 19-year-old Nick Waller of Gloversville, N.Y., who rides with Adirondack Velo Club, walked up to Landis, bumped fists with him, and then walked away beaming.

“I’m so happy. I can’t believe I just shook his hand,” Waller told his father, David. “Probably 90 to 95 percent of the pros, I do believe they dope.

“Even though he doped, he still had to get on the bike every single day. He had to train hard. He had to ride his guts out, puke probably at night, and I respect that. I know the pain I go through on my bike is hell. There are times I want to pull over and cry.”

David Waller gave Landis credit for breaking cycling’s code of silence.

“When he admitted it and came back clean, that took some guts,” David Waller said. “He’s leveling the playing field.”

Sitting astride his bike nearby and waiting to start, David Townend of Windsor, Mass., took it all in.

“I understand his situation. He’s basically losing his livelihood and he’s lost a lot of other things in the process,” said the 57-year-old Townend, who’s been competing for more than two decades. “It’s a shame. I wish the best for him. I don’t know that I agree with his approach, but I’m not in his shoes. The whole thing is something that we need to put behind us in the sport.”

The man has so soiled himself he should be untouchable. He continues to damage a sport he supposedly loves. Floyd, just go away quietly into whatever future you have that does not include a bike or the need for character.....you have no talent left for the first and apparently never had any of the second.

pretty obvious why there is no name associated with authoring this poorly written, one-sided article. good PR for Landis, congrats Yahoo.
nobody cares about that whiney little snitch.
cycling is different than most sports, it is mainly ruled from within the peloton, on all levels. Landis has no respect from any peloton.
Go mtn bike or triathalons Floyd, leave cycling and cyclecross to the men.
Oh and please tell me why any tax dollar should ever go to investigating athletes doing their profession? if and athlete kills someone (OJ) or a dog (Vick), sure use tax dollars for that, but not for them doing the job we demand they do when they sign that contract.

Has anyone here who has had a spine surgery ever come out of the process as strong as before??
Man this sucks, not me. Do not ever get back surgery unless you absolutely have to..which I did. Thought it would fix things instead it's much, much worse now. Oh well, C'est La Vie !! Je parle en peu francais.

No i'm not done but those young guns can really, really put it down !!!! Yes, I went off the front for a few miles only to get reeled in and destroyed up the next climb tring to stay with them. Chris and dave, great ride and nice beat dowm.....my legs were not great and back was real bad. LOL

Keep riding, Floyd. This is headed in the right direction.

I repeat to all that i am not a Lance hater. If Lance doped back in the 90s as young punk, or even during his Tour victories, I really don't have a problem with that.

What i do have a problem with is Lance continually not just lying, but aggressively attacking the people who are trying to find out the truth. Now we hear the latest bullsh**t about how investigating Lance is a waste of tax dollars, no doubt thought up by his super-high-paid lawyers and PR people. Since when is the goal of a criminal investigation to make a profit? The Federal Government prosecutes people for shoplifting for crying out loud. Lance's is a fraud case involving tens of millions of dollars. Let's allow the investigation to take its course.

And for you guys who keep insulting the French, well, at the end of the day it's not the French's job to clean up the dirty laundry of American cycling. I can virtually promise you that in a year or two from now, Lance is going to be a hell of a lot more popular in France than he'll be in America. He might even end up coming to France permanently to avoid jail time in the US. Lance is widely appreciated in France for what he is and will always be - a 7-time TdF champion.

The tax dollar wasted argument is a crock in itself. These people are on the payroll whether they investigate this or something else. They are salaried so if they aren't pushing on stack of papers around, they'll be pushing another around. If the Armstrong investigation was called off today, it wouldn't save the taxpayers a dime. Besides, the clowns in DC would find a way to spend 3 times that amount and call it savings in the long run.
So find a different song to sing when complaining about how your money is being wasted....it will be wasted regardless.

Big T you must have been the class clown. No class. Just a clown. Dominate the boards with your misdirection your deflection will not make the investigation go away. Grab some BBQ, Lone Star, and catch your breath. So far all I see grandstanding. Don't want to lose you to a heart attack just yet. 'though trial might shake your booties.
Entertaining opinion with some conjecture as easy to deflate as pin prick to a balloon.

Paging Doctor Ferrari by Bill Gifford

Do a search on this article which appeared in Bicycling Magazine in 2006.

One of the more fascinating articles on Dr. Ferrari's relationship with his "clients", how he literally wiped a Swiss pharmacy off its EPO stock, how he allegedly prescribed drugs and dosages to his athletes in their diaries, and his secret relationship with Armstrong, among other greats like Francesco Moser. The most brilliant part of this article on the seemingly righteous "il dottore" is at the end where he denies a much documented event in which he was seen wearing a fake race number and pushing his daughter up a climb so she wouldn't lose her race. It shows a reader that "il dottore" could call "bull@#$%" upon anything as and when he pleased.

An excerpt, (LA) "and his US Postal team issued a statement saying that Armstrong's coach was Chris Carmichael, and that Ferrari was consulted on a limited basis only. In an interview with Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport, Armstrong said,'Ferrari's been following my program since 1999, but only recently--with my desire to break the world hour record--that I've had more contact with him.'...
In fact, Ferrari's help was both more significant and more extended than early reports have shown."

I have a very low end road bike and the stem angle kinda hurts my arms too much. just started riding a few months ago and my arms and back are always sore after I ride. I ride an old fugiy tm bike. Bought it from bro who got me riding, says he dropped it once or twice and I am new to cycling so i dont know what he meams by thsat.Gave me discount so was stoked. Looking at some of the posts I think it means he rode away from some guys a few times. Oh well, help would be appreciater.

Matt I am not trying to dominate anyones opinion. It is just a shame that people are so quick to jump the gun. very softly so as not to offend ANYONE lets all wait for the absolute proof before we JUDGE Lance and anyone else who was named in the Landis revelations, Thats when a court of law says yes lance you did it and now you are a discraced cyclist, then we can judge him as we all see fit. But not before that.
That is all from me on the subject guys.

    Marcel,
Starting now you frekin half wit, please document for us the 100 times and lies from Lance. We are anxious to hear all the 100, if you cannot back it then SHUT IT !!!!

Did miguel indurain dope too . The TDF is the most grueling and spectacular sporting event in the frekin sad world we live in. Appeciate the race and all it stands for. This by the way is not a lance only accusation he blew out accusations at over 50 riders, there is only 9 per team but you know nothing of the sport.
He accused the UCI (our governing body) but you would not know this of covering up all his supposed positive tests.

Five hundred bucks that both zizou and marcel work for the french rag L'Equipe or l'emonde. Both known as trashy gossip rags !!!!!

Anything you say about Floyd in terms of being a liar, you can say about Lance TIMES 100.

Yet none of the big bad studs around here have the guts to say a word against Lance for all the lying he has done, they'd rather keep throwing peanuts at Floyd. You guys are pretty courageous aren't you.
