Landis quietly leaves Oregon cycling event

BEND, Ore. (AP)—While Lance Armstrong’s legacy was celebrated in his final Tour de France, disgraced former winner Floyd Landis quietly ducked out of a race in central Oregon.

Landis was stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title for doping and admitted this spring to using drugs to gain a competitive edge. The admission spurred a federal investigation of possible fraud and doping charges against Armstrong and his associates.

Armstrong has denied using performance-enhancing drugs and has never tested positive.

Landis reiterated his claims on a network news show aired this week. At the same time, he was riding in the Cascade Cycling Classic in Bend.

But Landis was a no-show for Sunday’s final stage of the event.

He rode Saturday night in the fourth stage through downtown Bend, where he was met by a smattering of cheers and boos by some of the 10,000 spectators who recognized him.

Landis entered the race at the last minute earlier this week and caused a stir in the prologue time trials when he wore a plain gray T-shirt rather than a racing jersey because race officials said he could not wear a certain logo.

When asked by The Associated Press on Saturday if he could answer a few questions, Landis declined.

“Nah, not right now,” he said. “Maybe tomorrow if I feel better.”

It really was not much of a surprise that Landis bailed on the final day— considering temperatures were in the 90s for the difficult 82-mile stage and he was never in contention. England’s Rory Sutherland of the UnitedHealthcare team won the five-stage event.

Earlier this week Landis spoke briefly to the Bend Bulletin newspaper about both coming clean and airing the allegations against Armstrong that touched off the federal probe.

“It was about doing what was right,” Landis told the newspaper. “It was about doing what allowed me to live my life OK with me. So whatever the reaction is, I hope it’s good. I hope people want to know the truth, but that wasn’t really my main concern.”

While Landis still maintains he did not use synthetic testosterone—even though he tested for high levels of testosterone following his Tour victory—he has conceded to using other performance-enhancing drugs and blood doping.

Landis claims that doping was common years ago when he and Armstrong rode together on the U.S. Postal Service Team.

Armstrong, meanwhile, wrapped up his final Tour de France on Sunday. He has said he wants to devote more time to his family and to his foundation to benefit cancer research. Alberto Contador won the Tour for the third time in four years.

Armstrong, who questions Landis’ credibility, has hired an attorney to address the federal investigation led by Jeff Novitzky, a special agent with the Food and Drug Administration.

“That’s just somebody who’s trying to ruin the lives of others,” Armstrong said of Landis while on a high-speed French train from Bordeaux to the Paris area for the Tour’s 20th and final stage.

Three-time Tour winner Greg LeMond says has received a subpoena as part of the probe. LeMond was in Bend earlier in the week and spoke to KTVZ-TV.

“I think that Floyd, the fact that he kind of came clean for himself, I think that’s really important,” LeMond said. “We had our own differences about four years ago. I kind of understand where he was. He’s in a difficult position.”

Former professional cyclist Tyler Hamilton has also been subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury, although his attorney refused to say whether it has anything to do with the Armstrong investigation. Hamilton also rode on the US Postal team with Armstrong.

    Landis: you are an @#$%.
Lemond: You were an American (Sports) Hero, Now, your just an @#$% too.

You guys are dumping US cycling down the tubes. Dragging Lance through the @#$% again.
Did you two @#$%s ever consider what this may do to LIVESTRONG?
You both are jealous and pathetic. Just can't let it go.

I had my doubts about Lance. But if there is no concrete evidence, then go crawl
back into your holes and disappear. If there is proof, Then Lance will have to face
the consequences, and be shamed like the both of you. I hope not.

We are just about OUT of American Sports Heroes.

PS: God Bless our Troops, the REAL HEROES. Because without them, you two @#$%s
Landis and Lemond would not be free to speak your mind. Don't ever forget that boys.

Always trying to take down others instead of concentrating on yourself. Landis is a sore on the @#$% of cycling. You cannot sit down without thinking of him. He admitted his wrongdoing and should have left it at that, but he is hungry for money. That is all that this is a bout is money. How many book deals can he make and who would ever buy them? What a douche!!!

Words mean nothing. Saying you saw someone do something does not hold up in court. Positve urine or blood samples showing that LA doped or a video of him doing it would work otherwise this is just a big waste of time.

The VERY sad part of all the "finger pointing" and "he-said/ they-said" is so very bad for American cycling. It has been proven that there are dopers from ALL countries. Lemond and LA could have been the defining people to promote tours and bring American cycling to another level here in the states, but now, just another waste for our government to "investigate". Since they want to "investigate"...look into who is paying Landis and Lemond for slinging mud, could very well be the french would have never caught LA, but are just loving the way all this is playing out. No matter what, GO LA!

Landis continues to deny synthetic testosterone use, "even though he tested for high levels of testosterone following his Tour victory".

So in effect Floyd is saying that the infraction that caused him to be stripped of his TDF victory, didn't happen. How can he claim to be telling the truth in the face of an obvious lie?

At least Lance has never tested positive. I think this is going to boil down to Floyd's word vs. Lance's. I think the outcome is predictable.

Let's call LeMond's posturing, posing and constant commentary what is really is...he's stuck in his wounded child/abuse victim mode and his constant efforts to redeem himself through his self-serving 'look at what I did, don't forget about me" rantings only reaffirm the omnipresent emotional void he needs to fill. Every LeMond post, article or assessment contains at least two parts....critical comments about others and self-referential reminders about himself....he doesn't live in the here and now, his every emotion, motive and expression is tainted by his past and his need to reconcile not doing anything when being abused.

Every time LeMond speaks, it feels like a train wreck.

Mr.Landis, you said “It was about doing what was right. It was about doing what allowed me to live my life OK with me." I respect someone who comes clean and humbles themselvs, if its about you living your life OK, but why the need to snitch and damage others? That has nothing to to with "doing what is right". Evey man has their demons to confront, it's nobodys job to point fingers and talk about others' problems. IF Lance is not clean, give him his right to come clean, if he does not, DON'T WORRY ASBOUT IT, you said it was about YOU doing whats right. The truth eventualy will come out, it always does.
And why now? Right before the start of TDF? Was drawing negative publicity towards the sport that gave you your career also "the right thing to do"? Perhaps congrtulations are in order for 'great timing'. Life is not always fair, but trying to take a jab or low blow at someone, because YOU got a bad deal in the end is just childish, just like your snitching. Leave the snitching to the kids in kindergarden and be a man!!

The truth...Landis wouldn't know the truth if it bit him in the arse. He should have charges filed for lying to all those people who gave to his defense fund as he claimed his innocence. That is fraud. Lemond, my early cycling hero, has no first hand knowledge of his doping. Although, he has had some nasty dealings with Armstrong.
The circumstantial evidence is impressive, but only the upcoming testimony COULD convict Armstrong.
As a young cyclist, riding 250 miles a week, I understand how hard it is to add 2 MPH to your average speed. At the level Lemond, Landis and Armstrong were competing, you look for any advantage. In "the day" riders would train at altitude to increase the red blood cells(RBC), which carry more oxygen. Now there are drugs that cause the body to produce RBC. How long and at what level do you have to take these drugs to be caught? Is "under the radar" legal? If the Cycling governing body sets a level of a substance as illegal, is everything below that level ok? OR is cheating-CHEATING?
What Greg accomplished was amazing and I followed each tour. I feel if he would not have been shot he would have tied the record of 5 wins. Also, what Armstrong accomplished is awesome. 7 wins after cancer.
Drugs or No drugs, I don't know. I will not convict him - that is for the people wasting my tax dollars.

It's interesting to read all these posts telling Landis and Lemond to shut up.

These posts are afraid of the TRUTH.

It's like going to a shopping mall and seeing a retard loser Military prune abuse his own child in public meanwhile having everyone deny what they just saw.

This is no different from these ridiculous posts.

Arm(weak) paid hush money and fooled the system and his fans.

Just wait, once everyone rats on him he's gonna crumble....

then all you rednecks will finally accept the TRUTH.

You rednecks were the same idiots that supported Landis in the first place....

Landis is a joke. He has no credibility. His presentation of this latest "truth" is clumsy and nonsensical.

His behavior is odd, further diminishing the likelihood of people believing his story.

Which is sad, because he might actually be telling the truth.

Greg Lemond might be obsessed with Armstrong, but at least he doesn't exhibit the odd behavior of the sad, pathetic man named Floyd Landis.

It's all about people wanting their 15 minutes of fame, and some people will try to get it no matter who it hurts, what it costs. My first thought in all this is how much is it costing the tax payers to investigate a man who has never tested positive in something like 500 times based on the story being told by a man who did test positive and lost his title. I also remind myself that in this day and age even federal prosecutors want that 15 minutes no matter the cost. You just have to turn on the tv to see all kinds of examples of people doing really mean, harmful, expensive to others and very stupid things just to have the spotlight on themselves for even the briefest of moments and they will lie if it gets them attention. Concerning the federal prosecutor running this dog and pony show, well just another example of why our country has a huge deficit, because all these little expenses add up to one big bill for us. I'm sure if he tried hard he could find some real criminals doing real harm to go after.

Landis would have been eligible for this tour de France if he just admitted to doping after the test. Minimum ban 2 years, but he continued to lie and by the time it was over, no one wanted to ride with him. He stole money from people for a defense that never happened. Landis can cry, @#$% and complain but it will never mean a thing. Landis has earned everything he has gotten, No tears, no tears at all.

@#$%odor is soooo doped up!! C'mon, implicated in Operation Puerto and then? Nothing?- ah it was a spanish investigation!! Hmmm, anyone else think that's curious? That should be the story, Gene doping "champion". What a joke. Also, LANDIS GO DIE!!! And if congress starts wasting time and money investigating this crap, people gotta stand up and say "WHO CARES?" ,let them dope all they want, it's their bodies. Unless Vegas needs "fairness" for some reason, kinda like the NFL injury report- solely for odds making purposes. Waste waste waste of time.

Lance is paying a very high cost for attempting to regain the top place once was his sole property after seven well fought and deserved campaigns. He found out, however, that it's certainly a hard enduring and sometimes unsurmountable task to replicate history with abundant yet diminishing resources (a strong body, a high spirited mind, a willing to help team, etc.). The timing of the investigation by federal authorities came at the most unwelcome moment. Despite the high cost and the adversities, the fact remains that Lance kept fighting and that, to me, is proof of the measure of a man. Not a word about Landis accusations, since I used to admire the great rider he once was and now he has created such a mess in everybody´s minds. A pity he's the reason for which scandal has arrived.

All Landis had to do was say to come clean was "Yes I did it, I thought I had to to be competitive, but now I've got to live with the consequences. " and then "No comment on anyone else -- I'm responsible for me, and that's it."

And people would have forgiven him and moved on. And doubtful anyone would boo him at other events...

Both Landis and Lemond need to just shut up and fade away! They are merely attempting to scratch and claw for a spotlight that has long since focused elsewhere. Maybe they could attempt a jump over the Grand Canyon on a tandem beach cruiser. That might get them the attention they desire! Sadly, at one point I respected both of these guys for their cycling accomplishments but they've both turned out to be just like so many athletes from the other sports.

Hey Al, since Landis' book, "Positively False" is now fraudulent by Floyd's own admission, I wonder if you can get a refund?

What's the next book for Floyd, "Positively Positive, maybe"?
