Washington requests 2012 Giro start
MILAN (AP)—The mayor of Washington has reportedly agreed to meet with organizers of the Giro d’Italia on Thursday to request that the start of the 2012 race be held in the U.S. capital.
Adrian Fenty will discuss the idea with race director Angelo Zomegnan on Thursday, La Gazzetta dello Sport reported Wednesday.
“There’s a lot of enthusiasm in America for the Giro, they’re enticed by it,” Zomegnan said. “(Lance) Armstrong’s participation in the centenary race certainly added to the enthusiasm.
“The Giro is popular abroad, not only in Belgium and Holland, where we will start the 2010 race, but from countries such as Liechtenstein, Denmark, Spain, Germany and France.”
Last month, a working group exploring a U.S. start to the 2012 Giro said two stages in Washington were being considered, a prologue and a stage race. The course would include all of Washington’s main sights, including the Mall, the Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol and the White House.
New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Toronto are also reported to be interested in hosting the first ever trans-Atlantic leg.
The Netherlands will host three stages next year before the race moves to Italy.
