Cyclist Evans expects big things from Armstrong

  • Print

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP)—Road race world champion Cadel Evans is predicting bigger things for seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong in 2010 than he achieved in his comeback to professional cycling this season.

Armstrong finished third in this year’s Tour de France at age 37, his first since retiring following his unprecedented seventh straight win in 2005.

“He’s going to be bigger and more dangerous than in 2009—we’ll see Armstrong at another level in 2010,” Evans said Wednesday during a promotional tour in Australia.

Armstrong has left the Kazakh-backed Astana team and will be the main rider for the new ProTour squad Team RadioShack.

Evans has also switched teams, the 32-year-old Australian leaving Belgium-based Silence-Lotto earlier this month for new American squad BMC.

He was 30th in the Tour de France this season after runner-up finishes in 2007 and ’08, but got his year back on track by finishing third in the Tour of Spain and then winning the road race world championship at Switzerland in late September.

Both Armstrong and Evans will compete in the Tour Down Under in Adelaide, South Australia state, in January. Armstrong, a cancer survivor, made his competitive comeback in the same Australian race this year.

Evans’ team BMC has been given a wild-card entry for the Jan. 17-24 race.

Evans conceded he’d taken a risk signing with a new team, which will also need a wild card to race the Tour de France, but there were many benefits.

“BMC, they’re not a big team now, but they’re growing—for me, to join a team as they’re growing is an interesting project,” he said. “They have everything in place to be a very good team and that’s really what I’m looking for, the core values and philosophies.

“Maybe I will miss out on the Tour, but we have all the capabilities to prove we deserve a place.”

Ji, glad to see that I didn't offend. It is easy for anyone to sit behind a computer and throw insults. We see it all the time on forums and blogs. I will do my best to NOT be one of those kind of posters. Maybe IT will tire of posting but I doubt it based on past years of experience. John T. has done more to expose IT, his real name, where he raced and with what team, where he lives, what he does or did, and more personal information along with Truthserum. It was as easy as doing some searches. This information was easy for me to find also. If it weren't for IT's prolific posting over the years, he would have remained anonymous. Maybe we can return to some real conversations about cycling in future article blogs. I look forward to it...

Matt, point well made, and well taken.

John, yes I have also made efforts through Feedback to sports.yahoo.

Education of cycling was/is the aim. Not bragging.

    Ji,

Do you mean will you get an email from Yahoo like the one I posted last night?

If you have put in as much effort as I have to rid IT of these posts, yes I hope you would get one.

Other than that, I have no clue what you mean.

You and Peter give the post diversity and a different point of view. You guys don't throw the same old tired drug posts that IT keeps posting.

As posters from other cycling forums have said (paraphrase), if he only posted one or two times, wasn't so combative and defensive and could reasonably back up his message with hard evidence, he would be bearable.

Unfortunately, that is not ITs character.

The Stupidity of Arrogance is that by looking down your nose you can't see the horizon.

Ji, I am just an individual who happens to be interested in cycling and I appreciate all points of view here. I have engaged other posters here including yourself about cycling and the "nuances", oh the nuances. I am the first to say that I don't know more than the next person when it comes to cycling and international cycling. I do know enough however to engage each and every person who has been to these forums. You are no better than anyone else here but I suspect you have been involved and know quite a lot. That's great but so what! Just bring your part to the table and don't brag about it.

I think you were talking to me when you said there was only one or two people here who knew cycling. I wonder who you are referring to? I know cycling but not as much as some and that's ok with me. My personal experience is that I used to race up and down the East Coast on a team years ago. I moved up in the Categories and raced against well established Cat 2's all the time. I was a strong 3 at the time and had a number of placings back in the day. I am sure there are much stronger riders here who could put me in my place but so what! I have fun still putting the hammer down from time to time. I stll climb in the saddle but have added mountain biking as a fun past time. I have a family and cannot put the time in to race now but still have a passion for the sport. I am not a blind LA follower. You can take that label and put it somewhere else. I do however want to see him do well next year. I won't be shy about that. I also like many other riders and think Wiggins, Schleck brothers, Contador and a few others will compete for the overall GC in next years TDF.
I agree that ignoriing IT can be an option and I have expressed my utter frustration with this poster. I am nearing the poiint of moving on from engaging with him. I hope John T. will get somewhere with that communication with Yahoo. But I am not stupid and neither is anyone who has tried to engage with IT..

    Kong,

Hi. Sounds like Ji and Peter don't like us trying to ban IT or appreciate the long view.

We don't have to justify what we are doing to get IT banned to anyone.

Ignoring him hasn't worked as he has being doing this since 2001 on any cycling forum that IT joined.

Ji and Peter can have their opinion and that's OK. Once IT is finally banned & I think that Yahoo is finally getting the idea, there will be less posts on the articles and more cycling dialogue.

I will be looking up every article that IT has posted on & will give Yahoo the article and post numbers.

Yahoo controls ITs fate, but Yahoo needs a little or big push.

I am not concerned with who is supposedly "laughing" at me, internationally or nationally. I am not obsessed with my imagine. Thank goodness you've arrived to bring us up to speed. We have been lost without you. The stage is yours. Please, bring us up to speed on all the nuances of the sport. Tell us what we don't know about the sport of cycling, from an international point of view.

Bless your heart Kong. I may be new here but not to international cycling.
    I hope you know that internationally knowledgeable astute cycling supporters are laughing at you more than me. I just wish to bring your group up to speed. Don't matter who you support. Just be logical and understanding of the nuances of the sport.;

John T please don't care. Accept. The usual suspects have been at different times and together in France. One of us sells bicycles and we all thank LA for that phenomenon. We also laugh at the level of lack of appreciation to the agony and beauty of the sport of cycling many of the posters especially the zombies who show zero knowledge.
Really now...have you and your crew made ANY progress to rid the terrorist?
My suggestion was to ignore. Thanks to you look at the value of this thread? Hope u'awl do better.

Ji, thanks for the spiritual assistance. I didn't ask for your help. You can't offer any help for that which we are battling. Only you know whether or not you are a bad person. LA can't help you with that. I don't care who you or anyone else favors. You don't favor LA? Which race are you referring to? You're new to this site, aren't you?

    KONG, Matt, Ji

Here is something from Yahoo US that I have never seen before:

    From: Yahoo! Sports
    To: John T
    Sent: Sun, November 22, 2009 11:20:13 PM
    Subject: Re: General Comments (KMM160024331V72426L0KM)

    Hello John,

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Sports.

I apologize for the inconvenience you are experiencing with a poster on
    cycling forums.

Can you provide the specific URL for a forum where the poster in
question is posting and provide the post #s for the posts which you
    believe are not appropriate?

I appreciate your time and effort in writing to me. Your input helps us
to identify ways to constantly maintain and improve our service.

Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Sports.

    Regards,

    Johnny

    Yahoo! Sports Customer Care
    Sports General Tech E2Y

Maybe with a little more effort and the correct URLs and post numbers for IT and the assumed aliases IT has used, we can finally get Yahoo to do something!

    Ji,

I have been on the Yahoo.UK site also, and I have suggested to Yahoo US to adopt the Yahoo UK format MANY TIMES.

I really don't care if you or Peter or even Wabi think you know more about cycling than other posters.

Every poster on this site has the right to express his or her opinion. The only thing a poster doesn't have the right to do (IN MY OPINION) is to try to take over the site with numerous postings that disrupt the dialogue on this post.

I have taken the stand that IT needs to be banned from this site. He has already been banned from several cycling forums before which have moderators and administrators. Yahoo does not appear to have either.

Until IT is banned, this site will be bombarded and overwhelmed with the same postings over and over again by it.

You think he is a terrorist, I think he is a pain in the ASSet.

Ji: You're more than welcome to contact yahoo.sports. Most of us have been doing that for many many months now. Yahoo does not care. You would like to admit that only one or two people on this site know cycling? What does have to do with anything and why does that matter? Who knows a 'tad' more than the rest of us? Enlighten us. You're new to this site, aren't you?

You must admit only one or two people know cycling here. I believe this can stop anytime. It is up to you and the angry posters, to drop it. Visit on cycling at any and all levels. Just appreciate others who may know a tad more of the sport. I like the uk.eurospot.yahoo.com format. Perhaps that is what we should ask sports.yahoo.com to emulate. What do you say? So I believe this can stop anytime. It is up to you and the angry posters, drop it.

Just support your favorite rider and don't engage the terrorist. People who are watching/reading would respect you more Matt and your flock. This tit for tat spat for the support of Armstrong...questionable if you are they know cycling...who can only show support with the stupidity of engaging a terrorist.

    Allez Contador.
