Schumacher makes case to beat 2-year doping ban

  • Print

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP)—German cyclist Stefan Schumacher made his case Wednesday to overturn a two-year ban for doping at the 2008 Tour de France.

Schumacher gave evidence to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in his appeal against a suspension imposed by the International Cycling Union.

A verdict is expected later this year.

Schumacher won two time trial stages at last year’s Tour and led the race for two days. Two months later, the French anti-doping authority used a new test to find traces of the banned hormone CERA in Schumacher’s blood samples taken before and during the race.

The French authority AFLD banned Schumacher from racing in France for two years, and the UCI later extended the ban worldwide until January 2011.

Schumacher has denied doping. But he was dropped by his new team, Quick Step, before the 2009 season.

He also is waiting for a ruling in a second disciplinary case involving a positive test for CERA, the latest version of the endurance-boosting drug EPO.

The International Olympic Committee said it found the banned substance in a blood sample taken from Schumacher at the Beijing Games.

A verdict in that case is expected when the IOC’s executive board meets next month.

One wonders where exactly this is going; JB and Lance seem like a one-trick pony, and that trick, along with the ponies, is getting rather old. But I will give them credit: the Trek/Livestrong development team is evidence that they're building for the future, when it's finally time to pack away US Postal for good.

Is not that the truth? Unhealthy addiction . = Unhealthy adoration and support to LA by lance trance zombies? Hummmmm.

    Team Shack

v.2009: Or is it Team The Shack? God, that would suck. Anyway, I suppose you could argue that it didn't exist, but of course it did, just under a different set of colors. The Bruyneel Model is all about loading up for the grand tours without a shred of restraint. Of course, when you only meaningfully contest one of the three grand tours, despite having enough riders for at least five GT squads, it raises some uncomfortable questions. Like, do Bruyneel and Armstrong have an unhealthy relationship to the Tour de France? Of the I-know-better-but-can't-stop-myself variety? They do, and everyone knows it: you, me, them, even ASO. But hey, it's their money, not mine.

v.2010: It's tempting to just call this the wayback machine version of a Bruyneel team -- everyone but that annoying Contador guy -- but it is worth noting that they should be a presence in a few classics as well, with Vaitkus a B-list cobbles guy along with Steegmans and Rosseler, plus Lance and young gun Ben Hermans in the Ardennes. One wonders where exactly this is going; JB and Lance seem like a one-trick pony, and that trick, along with the ponies, is getting rather old. But I will give them credit: the Trek/Livestrong development team is evidence that they're building for the future, when it's finally time to pack away US Postal for good.

Holiday Wish List: Honestly, I can't think of anything. There are plenty of needs, but I don't know if Bruyneel is interested, and I'm not overly interested if they aren't.

Continue to ignore "it" and "it" will simply fade away. Do not fuel the fire "it" needs to survive.

Jeffrey, I feel you, I sure do. Believe me when I say that there is a lot of people reporting this spammer abuser of the cycling forums. Yahoo should be ashamed. Freedom of speech is fine but there still needs to be some guidelines...Post a little and join in with the regular folks like me and make a go of it if you can...Best regards--Matt

okay, so they're all dopers. so now what? prove it, change it? in the end it doesnt matter what hearsay everyone sprays all over. it only matters what one can make stick. after all these months away i had hoped all this garbage had passed. i guess its time to go away for awhile longer. maybe someday someone at yahoo will ban all those involved so the rest of us can enjoy the site again.

Peter Joachim is a writer for L'Equipe. He gets orders from ASO and AFLD to go on every single blog for cycling in the world to spread lies and inuendo about Lance Armstrong and other NON-FRENCH Cyclists and their unfounded, unproven doping activities. Meanwhile he has been instructed not to attack the biggest Doper in the Tour History--Richard Virenque who is a frenchman and got caught redhanded.
