Italian cyclist Da Ros banned 20 years for doping

  • Print

ROME (AP)—Cyclist Gianni Da Ros received a 20-year ban Monday because of doping, one of the stiffest sanctions imposed by the Italian Olympic Committee.

Da Ros was arrested in March while training with Italy’s national track cycling team in Padua and immediately suspended by his Liquigas team. Ten other people were arrested as part of an inquiry into a doping trafficking ring in northern Italy.

Da Ros was accused of providing performance enhancing drugs to two amateur cyclists.

Also Monday, CONI banned two other cyclists for doping—Davide Lucato received an eight-year sentence and Albino Corazzin was suspended for two years.

In another case, Gabriele Bosisio protested his innocence at a hearing with CONI’s anti-doping prosecutor.

Are you crazy? Do you really think that "performance enhancing" is a truly viable solution? These guys who are doping are under supervision of Dr.'s The problem is, no matter what you do to "monitor closely", these drugs that these athletes are putting in their bodies are bad for them in the long run because of the amount they have to inject are so frequent and in such high levels. Maybe you should actually do some research before you make such uneducated statements.

I agree with WeLove (#30). LeMond wants to accuse everyone else of cheating, but back in the day, when he put up a VO2 max of 92%, everyone is supposed to accept that as being natural. Great champion racer in his day, but a psycho, serial whiner post-racing career. The guy is toxic and doesn't know when to get off a rant......kind of like a certain poster on this site.

As far as this article is concerned, I like the 20 year ban. Make that the ante for cheating across the board!

Ok, people, what is wrong with doping? Why is everybody so worked up about it?
It's a result of technology. What is wrong with applying technology and science to the human body?
Has anyone ever taken vitamins? What about food supplements? Maybe we should ban all prescription
drugs and medication developed by big pharma, because it is high tech used on the human body (gasp!)
Complaing about doping is as stupid as complaining about other applications of high tech to sports.
Remember when they banned radios this year, in the Giro or Tour, I don't remember which? The stupidity of
that idea became apparent quickly. Maybe they should ban light weight materials for bikes, make everyone
ride 30lbs clunkers, can't have any high tech in sports, you know! And get rid of gears while we're at it, just
    another insidious product of technology.
What is required is control and order. Allow any athlete, in any sport, to use any substance they want (except
illegal recreational drugs), UNDER SUPERVISION OF A DOCTOR. A doctor supervises to make sure the
athletes don't kill themselves. Then the playing field is level. High tech advances in human biochemistry
will raise the level of all sports.
The whole "outrage" about doping is strictly a moral issue. The media and a few high placed hypocrites
are trying to sell us their morality. If you're dumb enough to listen to them and not think for yourself, then
you deserve the brainwashing that you're getting.
Let's call it "performance enhancement" instead of "doping" because the latter term has too many
negative connotations because of all the hypocrites telling us how we are supposed to think.
I want to see a damn good TDF next year... Lance, Alberto, all you guys, enhance your performance as
much as you can and give us a good show!

    Real Matt,

Yup, that looks like our nemesis IT alright. It's kind of hard to recognise him since the article actually uses proper punctuation and spelling but the tenor and aroma is all IT. I'm so glad that I have a life, unlike IT.

    PJ, it, tom morris, flyer,

OR what ever false name you hide behind (i guess now it's mine). Great job posting your nonsense under my name. Everyone who has been posting here know I don't have the grammatical errors of a 2nd grader or the spelling errors of a 1st grader. Grow up! Stop posting under my name you puke and have the spine to post under your own! That's right! you don't! You just like to spew false information about people. There is a special place for you in the afterlife my man!

I agree: Lance Pharmastrong and Alberto Contadoper are both Life Science pin cushions for:

    weekly/daily injections of:
    insulin/glucose
    EPO
    corticosteroids
    hGH
    female fertility hormone hCG
    testosterone
Pot Belge (morphine, heroin, cocaine, caffeine)

    IV feedings of:
cow blood spinners (Hemopure, Polyheme, Actovegin)
    saline
    glucose
    corticoids

But then, all Grand Tour GC riders are medically doped too!

Cool Welove, as I am sure you are aware, other good posters here have done the digging up of facts and made the connections via articles, several other forums where he was outed with his real name and banned. Again, I have nothing personal and don't know him at all and am doing my best not to directly interact. I imagine he does not like me at all but I am not the only one to take a stand with this poster. You have also...Take care--Matt

    Matt,

I saw that one as well. The article does have undertones of IT. I hope he's good with numbers, because he sure can't spell! I'm not perfect, but take a look at his posts. I think the quantity of spelling errors is directly proportionate to his intelligence level.

Yeah, I hear you welove, but it's the facts my friend. Check this out: This is a quote from an article in the San Francisco Chronicle written by Gwen Knapp dated 9-23-2004.

"But this isn't about Tyler Hamilton's personality. It's not about how he looks or acts in public. It's about his sport and what he puts into his body to stay on his corporate-sponsored bike.

"You always get this image of the athlete as a good guy, as a dedicated teammate with a great work ethic,'' said Tom Morris, a Masters team cyclist from Orinda. "They always make it so personal.''

Morris is a 46-year-old certified public accountant who has competed as an amateur, off and on, for 18 years. When he says "they,'' he means the advertisers who have overtaken sports at the elite level, so that none of it is trustworthy, not the performances, not the personalities.

Within cycling circles, Morris consistently has heard good things about Hamilton. Morris still admires him, but he can't believe in him, not entirely. He has heard too many stories about the sport in general.

Among those stories: When riders in Europe check into a hotel during a long race, they hang bags full of intravenous solution from the hooks on the wall intended for paintings.

"They take down the pictures in the rooms and set up a MASH unit,'' he said. "... They can't drag their IV poles through the lobby of the hotel. That would be embarrassing.''

A lot of sports fans don't want to hear any of this. They already have bought into an athlete's image, and lost the sales receipt. When Marion Jones ardently proclaimed her innocence this summer, a large portion of the media gave her a victory over drug investigators on style points alone.

They relied on the oft-cited fact that she had not tested positive, but only loosely, because it barely balanced her involvement with BALCO, a lab accused of creating a drug that defied testing. The real reason they said they believed her was simple: They liked the way she looked and sounded when she said she was innocent. (Read: She's a beautiful woman, and we're a lot more likely to believe that homely ones cheat.)"
