Lance Armstrong and his Astana team were fined for arriving late for the pre-stage registration this morning in Marseille, France. Rules state that riders must show up 20 minutes prior to the start or face a fine of 100 Swiss Francs ($92). Sneering contempt from the Tour de France competitions director is an added bonus.

"Today, and as usual, the Astana team arrived late at the pre-stage registration, in contempt of the crowd, who has once again not seen Lance Armstrong," [Tour competitions director Jean-Francois] Pescheux told Reuters before the start of the third stage from Marseille to La Grande Motte.

"They don't care about the fine. We are going to ask the UCI to be tougher."

Of course they don't care about the fine. Ninety-two dollars? Lance drops more on that at breakfast. Has that amount changed since the first Tour in 1903? The last time I heard of a $92 fine I was watching The People's Court ... in 1987.

And what's with the attitude, M. Pescheux? Let's not be perpetuating stereotypes about the French. It's bad enough that Lance is reinforcing notions that Americans show up late to everything.

One of the excuses floated for that late arrival for Astana was that there was bad traffic in Marseille. The irony of showing up late to a bike race because your car was stuck in traffic is something even Pescheux should find amusing.

Update: Armstrong apologized for his tardiness on his Twitter account this afternoon, blaming it on a visit from actor Ben Stiller.

Looks like Lance "crept" his way into third place today, is he going to go for yet another yellow jersey!?

i find it funny that the french tour director was worried about a french crowd missing Lance. This guy and the rest of the french cycling community has despised Lance for so long his behavior is ridiculous. If being on time to this registration was such a big deal, make the punishment harsher. Dock them 1 minute each, plus 5k? come on this is a team with millions behind it.

What a joke. $92 for a man who makes millions. Yeah, he's definitely going to be early to avoid such a hefty fine.

I'm just wondering how many times Lance has been pee'd tested ? Poor Frenchies, that can't seem to prove he does anything wrong and now they need to fine him for such a silly little rule.
Face it frenchy, you will never have a "countryman" win your title. You are just too wimpy, wimpy, wimpy.

Heres my assessment of the paltry fine, I'll pay it for all of them, send me the bill. As far as Pescheux goes, I bet you that in his childhood, he had his lunch money stolen quite often ... Get on with the riding ...

The fine is not the point. Jeffrey C sort of touch on it.
The race officials have been on Lance's ass everyday for his last five tours. He cheated they haven't proved it. They change the course; he wins. So now, they are going after his love by the fans.
"Lance, doesn't like you. He thinks you are gum under his shoe. If he was a real champion, he and his team would be here three hours before, signing autographs and making balloon animals!" What's next? Did Lance invade Poland in 1939?

They need to complain about something. I would love to see the other fines from teams. Hi - newsflash Tour De France. You are only getting scant coverage in the US because Lance is in this. Otherwise, we have no idea it is going on. And I think you know this as you are reporting $92 fines.......

i went to paris once and the french were really nice to me.
however other than 06-06-1944 i think they think we are too full of ourselves.
the french should thank america for 1000 years for what we did in 1944.
god bless america and god bless all past and present troops.

It's good to see supportive and positive comments for Lance. He has endured a lot in his life AND he has won like 7 Tour de Frances. That's pretty awsome in my book. Go Lance GL! and remember...just say NO! to drugs.

The fine itself is not the point. The real point is that they were penalized for their actions. There is no reasonable amount that they can be fined that would actually hurt them financially, because any fine that high would be ridiculous. All in all, the meaning behind the fine is that the team was reprimanded for being late, not to put a financial burden on them.

Wish the French would get off Lance's backside, already! At this point, what does he have to prove? He's a great athlete. Too bad the French can't get over it already!
