Saban glad to be out of Miami and coaching in college

Nick Saban never was comfortable in front of a microphone. That hasn't changed. He still says things he shouldn't. He still squirms. He still reflects on his time in Miami, too. On Thursday at the Southeastern Conference Media Days, Saban said his brief stay with the Dolphins was a tough time for his family.
''It was a difficult situation for the Sabans,'' he said. ``This has nothing to do with any particular place. But we love college coaching.''

Saban coached the Dolphins for two seasons and went 15-17 before leaving South Florida for Tuscaloosa, Ala. One year after Saban left, the Dolphins had the worst season in their history (1-15). For Saban, it was a valuable life lesson.

''Sometimes you learn about yourself when you go places and do things,'' Saban said. ``We took a tremendous amount of criticism for that, and as hard as we tried to stay focused and stay on the task at hand, it was difficult at times.''

Saban has been back in his coaching comfort zone, college football, for more than a year now, but it has been anything but relaxing. In his first 18 months with the Crimson Tide, Saban has endured more player arrests (10) than losses (six). Despite the tough beginning, Saban said his team's energy and fan base's energy is positive.

''It's a great time to be at the University of Alabama right now,'' Saban said.

Saban went 7-6 in his first season with the Crimson Tide. The losses included one to a former employer (LSU), one to a former directional school (Louisiana-Monroe), one to the SEC West's traditional doormat (Mississippi State) and one to an intrastate rival (Auburn).

Saban was reminded of the embarrassing loss to Louisiana-Monroe on Thursday, when a reporter asked him what he thought about Les Miles' latest joke about the Crimson Tide. Last week, Miles reportedly told an LSU booster club in New Orleans not to get excited about the victory against Alabama because ``a lot of teams in Louisiana beat that team.''

Rick Neuheisel skipped to the dais for his first Pac-10 media day on Thursday like a blond surfer who just caught a fresh wave. Two words later — two words! — he was buffeted by a swell that has seemingly tossed him around forever wrote Los Angees Times columnist Bill Dwyre.
"Rick, USC has built its defense around . . ."

Neuheisel interrupted with a complaining cry.

"First question, USC!" he shouted.

But he was still beaming. The mention of the Trojans wasn't the end of his fun, it was only the beginning.

"You have to embrace it," he said. "They're that elephant in the living room. . . . You can't be a football coach at UCLA and not find ways to be successful against USC."

And yes, he said, he will find a way.

"The good news is that when we catch them — I say when we catch them — we're going to not only have caught the leader of the Pac, but be among the programs that challenge for the big prize," he said.

About 30 minutes later, the Trojans' Pete Carroll took the same dais, wearing the same smile.

He was talking about his involvement in an Aug. 2 Live Peace walk, inviting the presidential candidates to join him, when I couldn't resist.

"Are you going to invite Neuheisel and Chow as well?" I asked.

"I'm sure they're going to be busy," he said.

When the laughter died, he quickly explained that, of course, everyone was invited.

But the shiny, new-car feel to this rivalry needs no clarification.

California QB first member of Washington's 2009 class

Washington's Tyrone Willingham won't have to answer is why the Huskies don't have any commitments for the recruiting Class of 2009. The Huskies got their first one Wednesday from 6-foot-2, 181-pound quarterback Keith Price of St. John Bosco High in Bellflower, Calif.
Washington is the last school in the Pac-10 to get a commitment for the class of 2009, with some surmising that questions about Willingham's future is making recruits leery. Every other Pac-10 school has at least four. Price admitted as much, saying he might have committed earlier otherwise.

"That was my main hesitation," he said.

But he said a few conversations with Willingham helped soothe his worries.

"I have faith in coach Willingham and the program and that he's going to turn it around," Price said.

Price is described as a dual-threat quarterback in the Dennis Dixon mold, running for just over 300 yards and eight touchdowns last season and passing for 955 and six touchdowns. Last year was his first as a starting quarterback, and he said his team spent a lot of the season with an offense based around its running back, reasons why he was viewed as under-the-radar in recruiting circles. His only other listed offers were from Utah and Nevada. But his stock rose after he was reportedly impressive in summer camps, including a performance at Washington's a few weeks ago. He said UW didn't begin recruiting him until June but then quickly made an offer. He said UW offensive coordinator Tim Lappano told him that "I was perfect" for the spread offense the Huskies are now operating, which includes liberal doses of quarterback runs.

On-line ad prompts rapid response by Notre Dame

Notre Dame moved quickly Tuesday to protect the eligibility of two of its most vital athletic performers thanks to, of all things, an online advertisement for cellular ring tones. The school said it sent a cease-and-desist letter to Cellular Services Worldwide in Boston for its impermissible use of images of quarterback Jimmy Clausen and Big East basketball Player of the Year Luke Harangody in an advertisement that appeared on NDNation.com.
Notre Dame expects that letter to satisfy any issues with the amateurism of both Clausen and Harangody, since the photos appear to be game-action shots lifted from the public domain. An NCAA spokeswoman said she could not comment on possible violations without working with the specific school on the specific issue. But according to NCAA Bylaw 12.5.2.2, if a student-athlete's name or image is used to promote a commercial product without his or her knowledge, the athlete or the school is "required to take steps to stop such an activity in order to retain his or her eligibility for intercollegiate athletics."

NDNation.com, meanwhile, severed its contract with Google, which placed the ad on the site. Google's software, according to site owner Mike Coffey, checks the context of the page and then posts what it deems to be an appropriate ad. Coffey said attempts are made to screen for inappropriate content. He also sent a missive to Google, alerting it that some advertisers are creating unnecessary angst over amateurism.

"After I received a call (from Notre Dame on Tuesday), I took Google out of our rotation," Coffey said. "With luck, that hopefully ends the problem."

Beckham has become medium-sized fish in very large pond

David Beckham has recovered from the injuries that wrecked his first M.L.S. season, and his pinpoint passing is a prime reason the Los Galaxy, which visits the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night, leads the league in goals this year. He has helped spur increases in TV ratings, attendance and jersey sales. But beyond the soccer world, any buzz — like the kind that might have been anticipated a year ago when his staged introduction was covered by several hundred members of the news media and carried live in parts of Europe — has mostly fizzled.
When the Galaxy traveled to Washington last month, attendance was off by more than 10,000 from last year's game, even though that one was played on a weeknight, in the rain, and it was unclear if Beckham, who was injured, would play. Beckham did play and afterward attended three well-advertised invitation-only parties at D.C. nightclubs. When the Galaxy returned last month, there were none. Crowds at the Galaxy's other road games have been almost identical to last season even though Beckham did not play in Dallas, Toronto, Colorado and Salt Lake City a year ago because of injuries.

"Beckham may have been a larger than life character, but in America he's become a medium-size fish in a very big pond," said Ellis Cashmore, a professor of culture, media and sport at England's Staffordshire University, and who has written a book on Beckham. "That engagement he's had with European consumers - who have watched him lurch from one crisis to another, on and off the field, then restore himself — it doesn't exist. He goes to the U.S. without that relationship and he has to be accepted as an athlete. There's a built-in obsolescence because people cannot continue to be fascinated by a soccer player in the U.S."

Andrei Markovits, a comparative politics professor at the University of Michigan who has written about soccer, said the question of how much Beckham had moved the needle was irrelevant now. If an American player says during the 2014 or 2018 World Cup that the hoopla of Beckham's arrival steered him into the sport, it will be a success.

"Beckham is an investment — like Pele," Markovits said. "People say the Cosmos failed and of course they did. But they created an entire generation that made soccer an American word. It was like mineral water. Now you can get a six-pack of mineral water in Iowa."

Top USC basketball recruit DeMar DeRozan said today that university officials have academically cleared him to immediately begin basketball activities with the Trojans.
DeRozan, a 6-foot-6 forward from Compton High, was prepared to enroll in summer classes, most likely at Compton College, he said, to ensure he'd be eligible to play at USC. He said he took an ACT college entrance exam in June, and the score, combined with his grade-point average, clinched his eligibility. He said USC compliance officials informed him of the positive ACT outcome on Friday.

Last week, USC Coach Tim Floyd said he was prepared to wait until the end of August for DeRozan to be deemed eligible. DeRozan was set to start summer classes Monday to beef up his GPA if necessary but said he has instead withdrawn.

Billy Packer had become old-school — and not in the good way of paying attention to detail or studying hard before he would go on the air, but in the way of a crotchety old guy who chases neighborhood kids out of the yard.
"Get off my grass, younguns," became "How dare the NCAA tournament committee let in all those Bradleys and Wichita States and George Masons instead of . . . (insert any bottom-feeder from the Atlantic Coast Conference).

Packer will no longer be part of the CBS college basketball broadcast team, it was announced Monday. In a statement, Packer, 68, said he was leaving to "pursue other basketball projects." He will be replaced by Clark Kellogg, 47. Kellogg is knowledgeable, fair-minded and, most of all, seems excited to be doing college basketball.

Packer, who played college basketball at Wake Forest, has been part of every Final Four television broadcast since 1975. His best years were when he was teamed with Dick Enberg and Al McGuire. His dyspeptic rant during the 2006 CBS NCAA tournament selection show, when he unapologetically savaged the choice of four Missouri Valley Conference teams, offered a couple of good points missed because of his red-faced anger. Oh, and no apology from Billy when Bradley and Wichita State went to the Sweet 16.

Sir Alex Ferguson has ordered Cristiano Ronaldo to return to
Manchester United in two weeks to end the ongoing drama over Ronaldo's dream
move to Real Madrid, the Daily Mirror reported Saturday.

Ferguson,
who was said to be furious at Ronaldo's agreement with FIFA president Sepp
Blatter's comments that the star winger was being treated like a slave for not
being allowed to leave United, wants Ronaldo to recuperate from ankle surgery under
his watch and clear the air about Ronaldo's future at Old Trafford.

The Daily Mail also reported Saturday that Ferguson
pulled out of a planned showdown with Ronaldo in Lisbon. The meeting, scheduled for Sunday, would
have been the first between manager and player since Ronaldo's move to the
Bernabeu became the hot topic during last month's European Championships.

Manchester United made a 20 million pound bid for Tottenham
Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov late Saturday night and expects to make the
move official within the week, according to The Sun newspaper.

Berbatov had been at the top of the wish list of United boss
Sir Alex Ferguson, who believes he can lure the 27-year-old Bulgarian to Old
Trafford with the promise of Champions League football and an
80,000-pound-a-week salary.

Ferguson
wants a proven Premier League goal scorer to play alongside Wayne Rooney.
Berbatov scored 15 league goals for Spurs last season and has tallied 46 in all
competitions in his two years with Tottenham.

Tottenham, which bought Berbatov from Bayer Leverkusen for $10.9
million pounds, needs to raise money to finance its bid for Espanyol
striker Luis Garcia.

Aguirre making Atletico Madrid a contender

If May is the time when soccer championships are won, then July is the time when the next season's winners are built, and so far in the rebuilding process, Atletico Madrid's Mexican coach, Javier Aguirre, is way out in front of the pack. Aguirre, who last year led Atletico to fourth place in the Spanish league to clinch a spot in this season's European Champions League qualifying tournament, targeted half a dozen players that he believed would make Atletico stronger in 2008-2009.
Although he has so far failed to land Brazilian striker Ricardo Oliveira from Real Zaragoza, on Wednesday he signed the last of the other five. While defending champion Real Madrid has stood pat, albeit covetously eyeing Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo, its in-town rival Atletico has substantially strengthened its hand thanks to some smart shopping by its Mexican mentor.

Aguirre has, in short order added a Czech, two Frenchmen, a Brazilian and a Dutchman to his roster, significantly improving the team's defense while also strengthening its midfield and forward line. Atletico already boasts such top-flight international forwards as Sergio Aguero of Argentina and Diego Forlan of Uruguay, plus influential midfielders Maxi Rodriguez of Argentina and winger Simao of Portugal. The rise of Atletico under Aguirre, who earlier this year turned down the chance to become Mexico's national team coach to stay with the Spanish club, has meant less off-season turmoil than in previous years.

Saying that he feels "very blessed" to be the UCLA men's basketball coach, Ben Howland signed a new contract that will keep him with the Bruins through the 2014-15 season. The contract guarantees Howland $1.97 million next season and will rise to $2.3 million in the final year. There are also incentives that could top out at $235,000 per year.
Howland's teams have gone to three consecutive Final Fours. Last season's 35-4 finish set a school record for victories. Howland also is only one of three NCAA coaches in history to win at least 30 games in three consecutive seasons.

Having three underclassmen taken in the most recent NBA draft — sophomore Russell Westbrook was picked fourth, freshman Kevin Love fifth and junior Luc Richard Mbah a Moute 37th — Howland said he expects a different kind of pressure next season.

"If you told me right now I'd get back to the Final Four," Howland said, "I'd be elated."
