Undefeated Zenyatta awaiting breeding career

  • Print

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP)—Undefeated Zenyatta, who beat the boys in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, is preparing for retirement and her future date with a stallion.

The 5-year-old mare is relaxing at the Hollywood Park barn of trainer John Shirreffs before owners Jerry and Ann Moss select a stallion to be bred to Zenyatta next year.

Shirreffs said Thursday that Zenyatta’s popularity has soared, with an outpouring of support via letters, phone calls and messages after she capped her career with a 14th consecutive victory in the Breeders’ Cup last weekend at Santa Anita.

Zenyatta will retire with career earnings of more than $5.4 million.

Hollywood Park’s stable kitchen has an omelet named after her containing three eggs and diced spinach topped with jack cheese.

Zenyatta goes down as the only horse to pass every horse she ran against
in every race she ever ran . no head to head duels here. she just blows by
    at 40mph. incredible.

I am glad she is retiring healthy. Both RA and Zenyatta deserve Horse of the Year. They were both great. They are true fighters. They should split Horse of the Year.

hey people i know zenyatta won on dirt once and rachel won on plastic once. they are both great and the question will never be answered as who would win in a showdown. you all can say moss dodged jackson by not sending her east to run against rachel or jackson dodged moss by next sending her to cali. i just think rachel had the tougher schedule over the yr then zenyatta did. yes the classic line up zenyatta beat was better then any lineup rachel faced. but rachel was shipped all over the country, running in quicksand, blizzards, hurricanes. while zenyatta sat at home all yr in sunny so cal expect i believe she shipped once to churchill but they scratched her because it was raining. (don't quote me ) hey i was beggin the mosses to run zenyatta in 2008 classic cause i would of had a better price on her and thought she would have beaten the boys last yr. so i am not bashing her. i love her and that classic run was one of the greatest moments i witnesses by a filly (plus i hit the trifecta on that so that helped). the only other filly moment that ranks better then that to me that i witnessed was rags in the belmont, that to me was the greatest filly moment. and i did not get a chance to see ruffian run so she don't count.

Both Zenyatta & Rachael Alexandra did monstrous achievements for being female horses, and each of them in their own ways. Rachael went 8-0 this year, winning on 8 different tracks, with 8 different conventional dirt surfaces, and beat the boys twice in the Haskell & Woodward. Zenyatta went 14-0, was undefeated this year, and was certainly the "Queen of the Southern California synthethics", capping it and her career with that huge BC Classic win, where she had to make up at least 10 lengths on the boys. Both of them also had different running styles--Rachael on the lead or stalking, and Zenyatta closing in late. To me, both of the ladies deserve to share Horse of the Year honors, and I would love to see Rachael run in Dubai in 2010.

To Michael, Zenyatta has answer all the questions to, she ran probably one of her best races on the dirt at Oaklawn Park. So she is not just a plastic horse as you are saying. And if Mine That Bird doesn't have traffic problems in the Preakness, she probably would have won instead of Rachel.

zenyatta beat all comers from around the world in the breeders cup classic. all the horses had won grade 1 stakes races before to get to the cup, and she vanquished all of them. she is the horse of the year.

Speaking to post #23- Michael: There's no question to asked about Rachael Alexandra and plastic. She ran over plastic and won easily at Keenland. Check her lifetime record. Jess Jackson used synthetics and Curlin's run over them in last year's B.C. Classic as an excuse to keep Rachael Alexandra out of the Breeders Cup Classic. Period. Rachael is not Curlin and won easily, as I said before over pro-ride at Keenland. The point of fact is that Jackson would never allow his colt to compete against this many Grade 1 winning, and most multiple Grade 1 winning 3yr.old and older colt's, plus Zenyatta in the same race. If you break down Rachael's win's over male's, other than the Preakness that Jackson new some of the earlier in they year winning colt's would be in, he's been careful to make sure that there's never been any more than a couple of tough male competitors in any one race against the boys. Case in point, the Haskell, the only two real competitors in the race were Summer Bird and Munnings. The Woodward, the only two real competitors in the race were Macho Again and Bullsbay. All of the best of her three male field's combined, even if you hand picked the best colt's out of all three races, pale in comparison to the field that Zenyatta beat in the Classic. The field that Zenyatta beat is 10x fold tougher than any male field that Rachael ever has or ever will race in what's left of her career. And if she were to ever face Zenyatta, which is unlikely, I don't care what the surface, dirt, sythetics, turf, or a Wall Mart parking lot, Zenyatta will run her down and blow by her just the same as she did against the best male's in the WORLD on Saturday.

yeah zenyatta did beat summer bird and mine that bird. but she beat them on plastic and may i mention, mine that bird is clearly not in the same form when rachel beat him (he is running like the 8,000 he was purchased for ). also summerbird 1st time on plastic. so with your points there comes big question marks. rachel has answered every question except plastic.

A lot of famous race mares such as Genuine Risk had problems with reproduction. Let's hope Zenyatta has more success on the farm.

RA's people picked their spots carefully, then quit running in August and began posturing...Zenyatta beat the snot out of the best there was to run against...no brainer who the horse of the year is...if RA runs against the boys again in 2010, she won't outrun Gio Ponti...gaurenteed...also, since before I got into the game (mid 60's) horse of the year is cemented in the fall, not at saratoga....

To say Rachel beat better makes no sense - Zenyatta beat Mine That Bird and Summer Bird the same way Rachel did; when Rachel beat older she beat a field that was nowhere in sight on Breeders Cup day.
Many people thought Careless Jewel was the 2nd best 3yo filly and she got crushed in the Breeders Cup.
Zenyatta beat Life is Sweet, the Ladies Classic winner 3 times. Yes, Rachel was the best 3yo, but don't tell me she beat better all year, that is simply not the case, do the homework.

come on people, i live in la and have seen all of zenyatta 's races. she sqweeeeeked by a handful of those races at subpar competition. so we can't go bashing the other girl. they are both great, probably the 2 best horses on the planet. But lets face it, rachel had the better yr ,against better competition. and she ran on a bunch of different tracks (mud, rain shine tornadoes blizzards , zenyatta in sunny so cal plastic). horse of the yr has to go to her. as far as toe to toe in a race who knows, maybe zenyatta on the plastic track, maybe rachel on the dirt. but both owners did the correct move. jess by keeping his girl on the dirt and moss by keeping his girl on plastic. zenyatta is done and rachel still got more running to do. at this moment zenyatta would have to be the better horse but lets not forget rachel is a baby at 3 so when she is done she will probably be considered the better of the 2.but we will have to see in her 4yr old campaign

    # 2 comment DA BEARS, I noticed that you have Curlin listed as a potential breeder for Zenyatta. Given the "great debate" that's going on across the country right now about who's the better horse between Zenyatta and Rachael Alexandra, trust me when I tell you that Zenyatta will not be bread to Curlin. The reason being that Jess Jackson, the owner of Rachael Alexandra is also the owner of Curlin. He said in remarks before this year's Preakness that Rachael would be bread to Curlin at the end of her career in an attempt to produce in Jackson's word's "a super horse" Frankly, even though impressive on the track, Curlin is as yet really unproven in the breading shed. I'd much rather see Zenyatta bread to a more proven stallion like A.P. Indy, Tiznow, or Gian'ts Causeway than I would see her bread to Curlin.

Palko, who are these most? Blood horse poll for HOY has 66 percent for Zenyatta and Rachel with only 34 percent. That tells me that most believe Zenyatta is the better horse. And why do the Mosses have to do anything? She won the Breeders cup Classic and is now the Champ and to top that off she also won the Distaff last year. What more is there for her to prove?
A.P. Indy would be an excellent sire for her but I bet they are standing in line for a date with Zenyatta.

Palko, Why would the Mosses think that way. They ran Zenyatta in the Classics, where was Rachel Alexandra, home in his barn. The connections were too chicken to run her there. And don't blame the track, because it wouldn't have made any difference in the outcome.
