Jockey Garrett Gomez recovering after spill

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP)—Jockey Garrett Gomez has taken off his scheduled mounts at Hollywood Park after escaping serious injury in a spill.

Gomez was resting Sunday, a day after being released from a hospital. His agent Ron Anderson says X-rays on Gomez’s shoulder and elbow were negative.

He says Gomez will return to riding later this week. Gomez is second among the nation’s jockeys in earnings with more than $17 million in purses.

Gomez’s horse in Saturday’s ninth race at Hollywood Park broke down in the stretch, sending him to the ground. His mount, a 2-year-old filly named Bonnie Brown Eyes, was seriously injured and died.

This might not be because she was a 2 year old but I agree 2 year olds should not be racing as early as they do. Coming from this sport we have ruined it by offering to much money like the breeeders cup it forces the trainers hand. If the owner wants to run their 2 year old and you as a trainer say no they will find one to do it. Some of these horses are running before they are 2 since in throughbeds they become 2 as of the 1st of January even if they are born in May. Its a shame glad Garrett was not seriously hurt

I agree that the break down probably had nothing to to with the horse being a two year old. There are hundreds of two year olds that race every day on tracks throughout the United States. I'm no expert on horse racing surfaces, but I have seen two break downs in less than two months! Both were on synthetic surfaces. I have serious doubts about these synthetic tracks. It seems that on a daily basis, top trainers complain that there are consistency problems on these types of tracks. The first one I witnessed live was the great horse Brazen at Santa Anita. If fact, Garrett Gomez was aboard Brazen and I had a pretty big wager on Brazen. Gomez caught the horse just in time to probably avoid a collapse and prevent further life threatening injury to Brazen. A credit to the great jockey Garrett Gomez. It was horrific and shocking to see the recent spill at Hollywood Park and I'm thankful that Garrett avoided serious injury. Jocks risk their lives on a continual basis and they deserve every safety precaution available including a well maintained and safe track to race on. Hopefully, track officials at Hollywood Park and Santa Anita as well as all tracks in Southern California will seriously investigate this break down and determine if it was in fact because of the synthetic track. Thanks

That horse breaking down had nothing to do with it being two years old. If you want to know why it broke down just look at the trainer.

Another senseless tragedy caused by a horse racing long before she was physically mature enough to handle the stress of hard work..... where will it ever END? I am so sick of the carnage which plagues this sport like the BLACK DEATH. I'm glad Gomez wasn't seriously hurt- but he shouldn't have been in that situation in the first place. Racing is dangerous- in fact, it's often DEADLY to people and horses alike. 2 year old horses need to be grazing and playing in the pasture, not running on a track where they can break down and DIE the way this filly did. THEY ARE BABIES, folks- it's that simple. WHEN, Oh WHEN, will the powers that be who run this sport ever GET THAT simple fact?? These horses are TOO DAMM YOUNG to be doing what we demand of them- and they are paying for our vanity and GREED with their LIVES. They can argue that they've made racing safer by eliminating drug use until the cows come home, but they STILL will not address the real, underlying cause of ALL the tragedies in recent years. What happened on Saturday was totally avoidable, and very, very sad. As a society, we would never ask a 6 year old human child to run around a dirt track with hundred pound weights strapped to his or her back, because it would KILL the kid. But we have no qualms at ALL when it comes to demanding that young horses do this very same thing. Is our thinking REALLY that screwed? Do we place a higher value on winning money than we do on the life of either an animal or a person? It sure looks that way , at least to me. Racing used to be a pretty decent sport-but I can't stand what has become of it in recent years. I would rather remember the sport as it used be.
