Gio Ponti comes off turf for Breeders’ Cup Classic

  • Print

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP)—Like Zenyatta, Gio Ponti was out of his element in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Saturday.

Zenyatta, facing the boys for the first time in her career, became the first female to win the richest race in North America. Gio Ponti, a dominant force on turf this year, finished second in a solid transition from grass to the synthetic surface at Santa Anita.

Trainer Christophe Clement and Castleton Lyons Farms debated running Gio Ponti in the $3 million Turf. They went for the greater glory and more money, nearly pulling it off at 12-1 odds.

“This proved it was the right decision to run in the Classic and not the Turf,” Clement said. “I hope to try it again next year.”

Gio Ponti won four Grade 1 turf stakes this year. The divisional championship will probably come down to Gio Ponti and Conduit, the repeat winner in the Turf.

Like Zenyatta, Gio Ponti rallied from far back in the Classic. Ninth for most of the race, he charged home to grab a narrow lead in the stretch. Only a breathtaking rally by Zenyatta denied the 4-year-old the victory.

“He split horses like a champion,” jockey Ramon Dominguez said. “He just took off when he got clear. That’s an extremely nice filly and I’m so pleased and happy with the way my horse ran.”

FLYING DETTORI: Frankie Dettori’s traditional flying dismount wasn’t very smooth as he needed to put two hands on the ground to cushion his landing following the victory by Pounced in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

Dettori recovered quickly, bouncing right up to plant a kiss on a nearby television camera. It was the flamboyant Frankie being Frankie, following his ninth Breeders’ Cup victory.

Born in Italy and now based in England, Dettori delivered a world-class ride. Saving all possible ground, Dettori kept Pounced along the fence until midstretch. When an opening developed, he urged his colt on to a three-quarter length victory.

“I had a box seat, very pleased that we got the split between horses,” he said. “He fought really hard for me. The gap was big enough for me to go through and my horse was very brave.”

HEAD’S UP: Freddy Head became the first horseman to ride and train consecutive Breeders’ Cup winners.

As a jockey, Head scored with Miesque in 1987 and 1988. On Saturday, Goldikova prevailed for the second straight year over the Santa Anita course.

All four victories came in the $2 million Mile on the turf. In each instance, a filly beat the boys.

Head, 62, was the leading rider in France six times during a 34-year career. He hung up his whip and goggles in 1997 to launch a new career as a trainer.

It took almost 10 years before Head conditioned a Group 1 winner. Goldikova, a winner of 10 of 15 races against world-class runners, put Head back on top.

“I don’t have the words to say what I feel,” he said. “Having ridden a horse like Miesque and now training a horse like Goldikova, it’s something you can’t dream of.”

Head said it’s less nerve-racking to be in the saddle.

“I think I was more nervous before this race than when I used to ride Miesque,” he said.

HOPPER IN THE HOUSE: Prostate cancer couldn’t keep Dennis Hopper away from the Breeders’ Cup.

He decided to come out to support of The V Foundation for Cancer Research, the event’s official charity. It was revealed last month that the 73-year-old actor and artist had been diagnosed with cancer, although Hopper said Saturday he’s been battling it for nine years. He’s started a new, experimental treatment at the University of Southern California he hopes will help.

“It has great promise,” Hopper said. “Everything’s good right now.”

Hopper is one of racing’s biggest and best-known fans. He’s been to five Breeders’ Cups, including last year when he said he cashed a $17,000 trifecta ticket in the Classic.

He’s disappointed horse racing has lost some of its luster among the public but believes the sport carries its own alluring style and swagger.

“It would be a drag to see the industry come down,” Hopper said. “It’s such a great tradition. I hope it gets well and goes on forever.”

The “Easy Rider” star recently finished shooting the second season of “Crash,” a TV version of the Oscar-winning 2004 film. Hopper also has several film projects in the works.

Other celebrities at Santa Anita included Dodgers manager Joe Torre, actress Elizabeth Banks, golf great Gary Player, actor-singer Joey Fatone, real-life couple Jerry Ferrara and Jamie-Lynn Sigler of “Entourage,” actors Joe Mantegna, Joe Pesci and Jerry O’Connell and football Hall of Famer Paul Hornung. Boyz II Men performed “God Bless America” in between races.

@ steve. I'm not saying that Zenyatta should have gone to New York to race Rachel, but rather that she COULD have, especially since it was a given that Rachel was not gonna race on a Pro-Ride surface.
And steve for your information, Rachel's connections weren't the only ones who did not want to run in the Breeders Cup due to that Pro-Ride, which favors horses that run good on turf (Zenyatta's trainer even says so). Martin Wolfson said he would not run ICON PROJECT in the Breeders (even before this horse developed foot problems that caused her retirement). JACKSON BEND's (a top 2 year old prospect) trainer said the Pro-ride is a "big disadvantage and we'd be at a distinct disadvantage if we were to go" to the Breeders. VINEYARD HAVEN, another 2 year old, part owner, Robert Frankel, said similar remarks as did D Wayne Lukas of DUBLIN (and you know Lukas likes to be in the big races). Ditto for FABULOUS STRIKE (top sprinter), and Jackson's other star, HOT DIXIE CHICK.
And since that Pro-Ride favors turf (all BC Day's Pro-Ride run races were won by horses who had a strong liking to turf. Zenyatta had a high Tomlinson Turf Rating of 352, and Gio Ponti, probably America's turf champion, are horses that came one-two in the Classic), why would a dirt horse like Rachel, amongst many other good horses, want to come to the Breeders Cup. The only thing they could have possibly proven was that they were good turf runners.

and you quality road supporters...he should have been in the mile...he hasn't won since march..he hasn't had a steady campaign and won just an allowance sprint...after the florida derby, he showed his talent only in the morning...I sense an 'involved' owner..

spock...whoa...ignorance is bliss...when you are preparing for the championship race of the year, it doesn't make any sense to fly cross country to engage in someone else's pissing match...no, the place for them to meet was santa anita, and the whinemaker chose to posture rather than battle (remember the scene when travolta...michael...and the bull go at it)...RA cannot handle Zenyatta at 1 1/4 .miles....period...she was the one ducking at saratoga...the travers was a mile and a quarter and for more money...and a more difficult spot....if she's superior, let her show us that at the classic distance against the very best...Zenyatta did just that...like I said all year...shut up and run or shut up and don't run...

Sucks that QR got scratched, that threw out my whole bet. But today Zenyatta made a believer outta me. Whether she is the horse of the year though still remains to be seen. My vote (as if I had one) still remains with Rachel Alexandra. If both continue to train well, then Oaklawn should up the ante for the Apple Blossom to One million dollars to attract both of these fine animals.

Congrats to the connections of Zenyatta!!!!!!!

I'm gonna stick with my forecast that I made almost a month ago about who is gonna win this BC Classic . . . . QUALITY ROAD will win. This horse has decent grass pedigree (such types seem to do good on that Pro-Ride surface), and only lost by 1 length to Summer Bird in the Jockey's Gold Cup which was run on slop. Summer Bird is bred to love the slop, whereas Quality Road's jockey and trainer do not think that this horse handles slop particularly well, thus a change to a dry surface should turn the table in Quality Road's favour.
Of course this race is a crap shoot, as almost any horse can win, with the exception of possibly Awesome Gem, in my opinion.
And I'm not sure I understand the logic that because Careless Jewel ran a ridiculous fraction of 45.78 at the half in a 11/8 mile race (and naturally lost to the closers in the Ladies Classic, and especially since it was on the Pro-Ride surface), that thus Rachel would similarly burn herself out also to Zenyatta.
Rachel has been able to rate herself previously when other horses have set ridiculous fractions, as in the Mother Goose Stakes (Grade I) . . . . she allowed the pace setters to get a 4 to 5 length lead before blowing by. The Haskell is another example. Rachel allowed Munnings (the speed horse) to set the pace, and ran next to Summer Bird for most of the race, allowed Summer Bird to pull away with Munnings for a while, before blowing by those two horses at the stretch turn for the win.
To sum up . . . . Quality Road will win.

The Legends, you're wrong. There was nothing stopping Zenyatta from showing up in the Woodward. The people who ran that race would have been thrilled to have her, but she wasn't entered for that one, because her people wanted her to get to 13-0, so they kept her in Cali and raced her against a bunch of no-name fillies. The only notable horse Zen raced against is Life Is Sweet.

We'll see what happens this afternoon.

Ray, it is my opinion ( and bet ), that Zenyatta will round out the superby running 3rd or fourth. She has a tough opponent in Summer Bird. Mine that bird will make a late run and will finish fourth or fifth. The horse I think will win...wait for it....Quality Road.

    So to recap..

    1' Quality Road
    2' Summer bird
3'4'5= Zenyatta, Mine That Bird, Rip Van Winkle

Book mark this comment and let's see how close my superfecta gets ($10)

Life is Sweet won handily today against the best fillies and mares. But she could never beat Zenyatta. So the question has to be, just how good is Zenyatta? If she and Rachel had ever met the same thing would happen. Rachel would burn herself out like Careless Jewel and Zenyatta would run right past her. This race today pretty much proved that, and that is why Rachel is not in here racing against Zenyatta. One thing Jackson is not, is stupid.

The Legends. Rachell Alexandra and Zenyatta did have a chance to race against each other. That race was the Woodward Stakes, with a purse of $750,000, when Rachell made racing history. She became the first female horse to win that race and she did it against older Grade I male horses. Zenyatta could have been entered in that race, but was not.

This is a very strong field. Taking nothing away from her-
both Einstein (who has won on synthetics) and Gio Ponti (love Turf to Synthetics) will be very tough.Summer Bird has improved consistently and then there's
Rip van Winkle, Quality Road and Richard's Kid. This is good race to go against an ovebet favorite.
    never bet with your heart!!!

I never believe to race a great filly or mare against a tough large field of male horses. I've been around to see too many great mares get hurt in the process. If she wins , yes her value goes way up, but who is thinking about whats best for the horse. She served all proud, she deserves better. Boxing matches without gloves is not my cup of tea either. They are not going to make it easy on her, they will all look to lean on her when they can. I hope she makes it through uninjured. 14-0 could happen with a lot less risk. Every animal has their breaking point. Its peoples interest not the animals or the true lovers of thoughbreds. Maybe I'm just too soft, I saw Ruffian's last and cried.

Why do you think Raychell ran from Zenyatta? and yes she did just that. They had a chance to run against each other at one time, can't remember the race off hand but Raychell did pull out and could have won 500k for that race but she ran. Zenyatta is no doubt the best horse and she would not have beaten Mine That Bird if he hadn't got behind some slow traffic and went around and lost a few lengths but only lost the race by one and coming on strong. Oh well I guess we should know eveything I've said, right? ;-)

Zenyatta will have to run the race of her lifetime to beat the boy's Saturday which is a challenge when you are 13 for 13. But this is a Zensational (pardon the Sprint winner pun) field of Classic runners. I hope she is the favorite because I don't think she'll hit the board and that will make all the prices better.

Unfortunately for the connections of Zenyatta,if they put her in against the boys, she will come up somewhat short.I believe they (the connections) think that winning against the boys will levitate her stock. One problem is she has to win for that to happen.Zenyatta already has a high stock value as a 13-0 champion. That will be her legacy.Hopefully the connections will run her in the Ladies classic where she could retire as a greater undefeated horse ,Going 14-0.Honestly that is her legacy, being undefeated.I agree that if she loses againdst the boys, nothing will be taken away from her stardom. However,if she wins again? What a great story to tell the children. No matter what they do,I wish Zenyatta all the luck.
