Rachel vs. Zenyatta in racing’s Year of the Girl

  • Print

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP)—The much anticipated race between Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta? Well, it’s on, but only on paper. Horse racing’s top two ladies will duke it out among voters for Horse of the Year honors after never meeting on the track.

Each of them have stellar credentials in trying to become the first female to win the year-end honor since Azeri in 2002.

Rachel Alexandra went 8 for 8 this year, including three wins over males, and became the first filly in 85 years to beat the boys in the Preakness Stakes.

Zenyatta improved to 14-0 for her career with a one-length victory against a loaded field of males in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, many of whom Rachel Alexandra had already beaten.

The 5-year-old mare went 5 for 5 this year, but Saturday’s race was her first against the boys. It was also likely her last. Trainer John Shirreffs said Sunday that Zenyatta would be sent to Kentucky to breed, even though Rachel Alexandra is expected to campaign next year.

So who rules in this Year of the Girl?

“You tell me,” Shirreffs said.

It’s a debate sure to simmer until January, when the Eclipse Awards—the Oscars of horse racing—are presented in Beverly Hills. Members of the National Turf Writers Association, the Daily Racing Form and racing secretaries at the major tracks decide the year’s champion horses.

Even before Zenyatta’s come-from-behind win Saturday, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert suggested the horses should share the top honor.

“If they don’t reward her with Horse of the Year, it would be a travesty, or at least co-Horses of the Year,” said Baffert, who trained sixth-place Classic finisher Richard’s Kid. “It was the only time in horse racing that I didn’t mind getting beat in a big race.”

Chip Woolley Jr., trainer of Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, said before the Classic that Rachel Alexandra had already clinched Horse of the Year.

“She’s put up eight races on eight different racetracks, beat the boys three times and beat the fillies,” said Woolley, whose colt finished ninth in the Classic behind Zenyatta.

“The one thing everybody keeps forgetting, she beat the fillies with authority,” he said of Rachel Alexandra. “She didn’t win by a neck or a length or two lengths. She beat ‘em by 20 and in a big gallop. When you look at that and you put everything together, I think she’s a very deserving champion.”

Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird was beaten by Rachel Alexandra in the Haskell Invitational and by Zenyatta in the Classic. His trainer, Tim Ice, was critical of Rachel’s absence Saturday at Santa Anita.

“Each sport has their championship game,” he said. “If you don’t compete in the championship game, then you shouldn’t be a champion. This is the highlight of the year as far as all the great horses coming together. This should name Horse of the Year.”

Zenyatta’s owners, Jerry and Ann Moss, are playing it down the middle.

“It’s not really up to us,” Jerry Moss said. “We just brought the horse here. We beat whoever showed up. I’m not taking anything away from that other filly. As I’ve always said, she ran a tremendous campaign, and they deserve a lot of credit. I think it’s a tough one.”

Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta didn’t meet in the Breeders’ Cup because Rachel’s principal owner Jess Jackson dislikes Santa Anita’s synthetic surface. The 3-year-old filly ran on eight different tracks while traveling the country this year.

Zenyatta, on the other hand, stayed exclusively in Southern California. The only time she ever ran outside the state was last year, when she won on dirt at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas.

Her jockey, Hall of Famer Mike Smith, is admittedly biased.

“I think it would be a crying shame if she didn’t win Horse of the Year,” he said. “I wish they would have brought her (Rachel) here so we could have proved to the racing world what Zenyatta’s really about. I’m not going to go out and say I’m going to beat her, but I would have given anything to run against her.”

Both horses were at Churchill Downs during Kentucky Derby week. Rachel Alexandra won the Derby-eve Kentucky Oaks for fillies by a record 20 lengths, while Zenyatta was scratched from her scheduled race because of a muddy track.

“She could’ve run just the same as everybody else on the mud that day. I think everybody’s forgotten about that,” Woolley said. “She’s picked her spots very carefully.”

The industry attempted to bring the filly from the East and mare from the West together on the track, but their respective owners were having none of it.

The Breeders’ Cup offered to add $1 million to the winner’s share of the Classic purse if both horses ran. Zenyatta earned $2.7 million for her victory.

Online wagering services TVG and Betfair Ltd. offered to raise the purse of the Beldame Stakes at Belmont Park on Oct. 3 to $1 million from $600,000 if Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta both ran, but neither showed up.

Like the Mosses, Jackson said he always put his horse’s health and welfare ahead of running for big purses. Of course, neither owner had reason to chase the cash. Jerry Moss made his money in the music business as co-founder of A&M Records, while Jackson owns Kendall-Jackson Winery in Northern California.

Both camps earned industry-wide kudos for running their stars against the boys, which helped attract big crowds and public interest beyond racing fans.

“That’s something you really got to pat them on the back for,” Woolley said.

I don't know which of the two will win HOY? But I do know that I've followed and bet thoroughbred racing avidly since the day's of Secretariat and Ruffian. I've seen a lot of very good thoroughbred's race through the years. In my opinion, and I'm sure some will agree and some won't, Zenyatta is much too big and too powerful for Rachel Alexandra to hold off in a race. Zenyatta, bar none, is the best deep closer I've ever seen on the track. When she decide's to go, she just eat's the ground up. Having seen her run in the Apple Blossom Handicap in 2008 on dirt, one of her best performances imo, there's nothing there to lead me to believe that Zenyatta couldn't beat Rachel on dirt as well. I just really don't think, provided that Mike Smith gave her the correct ride, that Rachel could hold off such a powerful closer like Zenyatta. Like I said, I don't know which will win HOY, but if they raced tomorrow my money would be on Zenyatta to win, and of the the two I think Zenyatta is a more impressive filly. JMO

When it comes to weather , only mother nature can say ,, as far as the breeders cup in S.A. ( calif ) that will not happen ? MY opinion ,, in a match race mile & eight ( just the filly & the mare ) on the dirt .. rachel would beat zenyatta Tomorrow ! sooo many say it would be unfair to zenyatta in a match race ,, Thats BS ,, BUT anyway that will never happen !!! i do think Rachel is the best horse in the world ,, BUT shes a DAMMM GOOD 3 YR OLD FILLY! ,, WHO I THINK HER BEST DAYS OF RACING ARE STILL AHEAD OF HER ! hey chris ,, yeah if i own zenyatta i would retire her also ,,, she wants no part of that 3 yr old filly as a 4 yr old ! LOOK its over they will never meet and anything said will be based on opinions ,, and thats like ~~~ holes everybody has 1 lol ,, so whats new ,, BUT CHRIS did i call everything 3 months ago and everything so far came true ,, only thing left is HORSE OF THE YEAR & politics will give it to the west coast mare ,, look i need to get back to muk my next BC champions stall ~~lol

Hey Codeo Mukman, Jackson owns the best horse in the World now that Zenyatta is retired. It is to bad he will have to hear no matter what Rachel does next year they will always hear that Rachel could not have beat Zenyatta. Hey I agree with you that Rachel is only a three year old filly and running in the Classic would have been a tall order for her. Remember though it is the Rachel supporters that were saying there is no horse that can beat Rachel. So if that was the case she should have run in the biggest race there is. Zenyatta was the 5-2 favorite but 5-2 is a weak favorite and take into account all the sentimental money that was put on her. Rachel always went off at 1-2 ,2-5 in all of her races against very small fields so what does that say for her races? It says there was no competition. I wonder what Rachels odds would have been in the Classic? All this talk about East Coast connections not sending the best Eastern Horses to the Breeders Cup is their loss. I would rather try to handicap on a synthetic surface and firm turf in 75 degree weather than a sloppy mud hole and yielding turf course in 30 degree weather. I hear the Breeders Cup is thinking about running every year at Santa Anita. Better get used to it.

@ alext. Yeah I know about those differences in OSA, Hol, and Dmr synthetic surfaces, as I play these tracks all year long. Infact they're the main tracks that I play, with Bob Baffert being my main man. And that announcer at those tracks is definately the bomb. But nowadays, most of the good horses aren't affected so much by the differences of these 3 tracks (if they're running in the same class conditions) as when they were dirt, especially Dmr (Speed).

Ok lets see if i can get this right ,,lol might be a 1st , But i will try . Horse of the Year ,, Winner will be ZENYATTA, do i agree with it .. maybe not, But im Thats the Politics of it ! Rachel Alexandra should of taken the easy road in the Breeders cup and run in ethier the filly & mare Sprint 7 furlongs ,or the Ladies Classic 1 mile & a eight . No way was Zenyatta going to go into ethier races . Zenyatta had to face the males, especially this field that was entered in the Classic . Then everybody could of cried that Jackson was a coward not to enter into the Claasic,,then all Jackson had to do ,, Was get in front the media and say well WE were at the Woodward ,, i didn't see Zenyatta there ,, were in the Ladies ,, she could of come after us here too !!! I don't think zenyatta could beat RACHEAL AT A MILE & EIGHT. IF it were me .. i would of freshen RACHEAL up and raced the breeders cup filly & mare Sprint ,, and told who ever didn't like it to kiss my ? yall figure that 1 out lol so i will close with this IF ZENYATTA gets a Free Pass ,, only to run against the males ,, in the CLASSIC (where the competion wasn't so classic , in my opinion ,after all just look at the vegas mornning line odds ) That saids it all ! THAT field of horses on that Nov day 2009 ,,, were passed there peak and looking for a Winters REST ! Zenyatta had the FRESH LEGS ,, HOME COURT ADVANTGE & A MILE & ONE FOURTH !! HELL if i could see that ,, in my earlier post i told yall $200 dollars to win on zenyatta ,, it was a given. Politics politics it whats so wrong with just about every thing in this World ,, even Horse Racing !!!

A little info my eastern friends who might not be familiar with synthetic surfaces. There are several different types of synthetic surfaces, for instance Santa Anita has a "pro ride" surface, Del Mar utilizes the "polytrack", Hollywood Park is using "cushion track" and our cousins up north at Golden Gate prefer the "tapeta" synthetic surface. Each synthetic surface is as different as night and day! As an example certain horses who excel on SA's "pro ride" will come over to Hollywood Park to race on "cushion track" and absolutely hate it and finish "up the track". At Del Mar there are some horses who love that "poly track" so much it is the only synthetic they are capable of winning on, they totally suck at the other Ca. tracks.......

Brandie. I'm not trying to knock Zenyatta here (Zenyatta probably wins that Classic on dirt also), but rather challenge the notion that the Pro-Ride surface did not matter for Breeders Cup 2009. While those horesemen who raced in the Breeders Cup 2009 may not have complained about the Pro-Ride, there were a lot of Eastern based horsemen who didn't come to the Breeders Cup 2009 because of that Pro-Ride surface.
JACKSON BEND's (a top 2 year old prospect) trainer said this about the Pro-Ride "big hometrack advantage and we would be at a distinct disadvantage if we were to go". ICON PROJECT'S (top mare) trainer said a similar thing, even before her foot problems caused her to go into retirement. Ditto for FABULOUS STRIKE (one of the East's top sprinters), DUBLIN (D Wayne Lukas 2 year old Grade I winner, and you know Lukas likes to be on the top stage), VINEYARD HAVEN (Robert Frankel 2 year winner of Champagne Stakes (Gr.I) .... he was also concerned about only a 3 week rest between races in addition to the surface), and of course Jackson's other filly, HOT DIXIE CHICK. Those are only some horses that I can think of at the top of my head.
Even John Shirreffs statement of "it seems that the pro-Ride really favors turf horses" indicates that dirt horses run different on the Pro-ride surface. Notice how all the Pro-Ride Breeders Cup races were won, not only by longshots, but horses that could handle turf really well (due to a history on turf, or having high Tomlinson Turf Ratings. The Classic's Exactor shows you that. Zenyatta has a high Tomlinson Turf Rating of 352, and Gio Ponti is America's top turf horse).
As it's no secret about turf horses liking that Pro-Ride surface, you have to believe that those horsemen who raced at the Breeders Cup 2009, must have been prepared for it (based on previous experience on synthetic tracks, experience on running on grass, or good turf breeding), thus their no complaints.

well what do you mean different tracks.... is del mar, hollywood, oaklawn and santa anita a different tracks? get your facts straight people. zenyatta prove to the world that she is the hoy, by beating the best competition out there. those boys that she beat are the best from all over the world. RA trounced girls and boys , but within her age not like zenyatta beating the best of the best regardless of age.... so in my humble opinion , the tracks should not be a factor on who wins hoy.....the hoy award should go to the horse who put a win on the breeders cup and facing stiff challenges... the only argument you have on ra is he beat the boys 3 times, but is that a stiff competition? zenyatta beat older horses and without a loss, compare to ra.... enough said....

Curlin did not lose last year because of the track. Curlin lost because he was past his peak and a tired horse. He had a pretty long campaign and horses never seem to come back after Dubai. Plus did they ever bring him out to run on the track? None of the connections who lost this year to Zenyatta are using the track as an excuse. Jackson should just be honest and say Rachel is a tired horse cause he ran the heck out of her this year.
There were no Go for Wands, no George Washington's, no Pine Islands to name only a few who did not fare well in a Breeders Cup. Not one single injury or fatality in two years at Santa Anita. That is what horse racing needs the most and not a we are not going because Curlin lost last year.

The owners of Rachel already tried to bump the sport last year taking Curlin to the Breeders Cup in CA. and what happened curlin lost. East Coast horses do not like the track surfaces in CA. So why take a filly that has another year of racing in her cross country and run her on a surface she most likly would not like. On the other hand did you see Z come east to run on the surface she would not like NO she was scratch in KY when the track was muddy. BOTH TRAINERS DID WHAT THEY THOUGHT WAS RIGHT FOR THEIR HORSES. ITS NOT ABOUT THE PUBLIC ITS ABOUT THE HORSES THATS WHAT COUNTS. Hats off to the connections of both horses for managing their careers to keep them both safe. Thanks for a great year CO-HOY if not champion filly Rachael HOY Z. Theres always next year for Rachael.

Codeo to answer your question about why all those other multiple grade 1 winners were all at such long odds, Jon White who set the morning line odds for the BC worked in conjunction with the Vegas oddmakers. you're absolutely right Vegas is not stupid. They all felt Zenyatta realistically was the only horse who could win the Classic, hence the morning line favorite. they were so sure she would dominate they gave a couple horses a slight chance and the rest at long odds had no realistic chance at all......Zenyatta in reality should have been "odds on" and the rest of field 25-1 and no better......

Read the final 2009 NTRA Horse of the Year rankings and the Bloodhorse.com final poll for 2009 which reflects the opinions of the top Breeders,Owners, Trainers and National Turf Writers Association they all voted in favor of Zenyatta over Rachel.....The industry has spoken! Personally i think they are DEAD wrong and they both should be voted "co champion Horse of the year"..........

The owners screwed up on Rachel, they new about the Breeders Cup and where it was going to be. They were only set on winning Preakness. Should have prepared for BC after that. After all, Championship Day. "Life is Sweet actually complimented Zenyatta by winning her division handily. Nothing against Rachel, but Zenyatta was totally awesome!!! I did't think she would win considering first time against Males and never been the distance. But she thrived. Rachel's owners didn't show up for the big dance and unfortunately cost her HOY. However they did BUY the Preakness. You have to manage your horse and his races. After all, Ky. Derby entrants are responsible for getting the Graded stakes earnings to make sure they make the 20-horse field.
