NYRA complying with comptroller’s subpoena

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP)—The New York Racing Association, which says it may need more taxpayer money to ensure the Belmont Stakes goes off as planned, said Wednesday it will open its books to the scrutiny of state auditors.

The nonprofit corporation, which oversees racing at Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga, said last month that New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli lacked authority to audit it. But on Wednesday, it said it would comply with DiNapoli’s subpoenas for its financial records.

Following legislation enacted in 2008, the New York Racing Association was reorganized as a not-for-profit corporation and awarded a new 25-year franchise to operate the state’s thoroughbred racetracks.

The association’s president, Charles Hayward, has said it may need $30 million more in state money to preserve the racing season at Belmont—including the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown—unless video lottery terminals are up and running soon at the Aqueduct track in Queens.

DiNapoli expressed skepticism last month, noting that the association went from financially stable to needing video lottery money in the span of six months.

“In 2008, taxpayers paid for a second chance for NYRA,” DiNapoli said Wednesday. “NYRA then turned around and thumbed its nose at those same taxpayers and refused to open its books to my auditors. … Fortunately, NYRA had a change of heart in response to my subpoenas. New Yorkers have a right to know what NYRA’s up to, and my audit will let them know.”

Association spokesman Dan Silver declined to comment, except to say that the group would comply with the subpoenas.

The comptroller’s office has a meeting planned with NYRA this month to discuss the audit, DiNapoli spokeswoman Jennifer Freeman said. It will include the $105 million the state gave NYRA in 2008, monies owed the state, and its operation since it reorganized, she said.

Among other documents, the subpoenas sought betting records; revenues from simulcasting fees at off-track betting parlors, racetracks and other sources; concession revenues; plus payrolls, contracts and other expenses.

These MORONS knocking Calvin Borel have probably never met him. I've known Calvin for 15 years and you cannot find a more humble or hard working person in racing. some of these clowns posting here really need a life!!!!!! they show in print what mental midgets they really are.

3/8's of a mile to soon, or the end results might have been different. MTB got bumped a couple of times in the turn pretty hard but, I think BOO BOO made a boo boo and moved a little to soon. OH WELL, cant complain about running first, second, and third in the triple crown with a little horse from N.M.

JOCKS are a bunch of pinheads. Always have been always will be. How could Borel leave a Derby winner. LOSER. Mine that bird would have won except for a bad ride in the Preakness. Steadied then stopped. Why didnt he go outside. Mike Smith said before the race "this horse makes one big move and thats what we will do" he went outside alright---rode the gelding right into horses---SICK---LOSER---Then loser Borel guarantees and shows his total lack of experience by moving way to early in the Belmont. Golly. I love that horse but i rooted against Borel, and I loved the results. Go back to the bullrings you LOSER BOREL. Get a good jock next time but you know what----THERE AINT ANY, anymore !!!!!!

No doubt Borel moved too soon, but that doesnt take anything away from MTB. He's a durable animal, a real throwback. I'm guessing that they'll point for the Haskell next. The march to the Travers should be an interesting one this year.

With all of the so-called 'misinformation and stupidity' in horse racing blogs that's out there, the fact remains that there is a Triple Crown, the first winner of which was in 1919. Some spectacular horses have won it, lost it and in the most awful of circumstances, horses have broken down in the triple crown races as they they have in other races not connected to the triple crown. There are major, major problems with the racing business on all fronts and changes are required that deal with treatment of the horses that need to be urgently addressed. Maybe the Triple Crown should be shut down. But it's not been shut down yet, and Mine That Bird closed on million dollar so-called mediocre race horses in two of these races that he made them look like they were backing up. I have never seen anything like it in the Kentucky Derby` or the Preakness. He proved his mettle even from his humble beginnings from less visible racing circuits in NM and Canada - maybe there are others like him that run in these racing circuits. Borel had a responsibility. He shirked it by standing there looking in the mirror too much. A great horse may have lost a chance at racing history because of it.

what I love about horse racing blogs...so full of misinformation and stupidity...humility...'triple crown' is a media driven phenomenon, not real racing...asking top quality 3yo's to run three times in five weeks is just insane...where the eff is know nothing peta when you need them? :)...stakes caliber horses usually run about ten times a year...sharp and sound is what we're looking for, not pleasing someone with nothing but a stupid opinion about an even more stupid series...and check out (recent) history...NY riders win the Belmont (nice job on alex, tho, rose.)..and trashing your jock on national tv just ain't right, chip the gimp..remember, you are two for 2009 and a low percentage trainer on the less than nationally competitive NM circuit...and borel didn't ride a race all week...what's that about?...John V got all the run possible out of the grey and desormeaux did a spendid job to get the $$...I think this crop of 3yo's is mediocre...just like last year's, big brown included...and racing is a business...trainers try to get the riders they want, and jockeys are trying to win the very next race...asmussen, the medication cheater, won over 600 races last year...a majority of them at tracks where borel rides...see above about woolley...who would you want to ride for?...all of you with an opinion and maybe a gambling jones, but nothing positive to contribute?...

Why can't we apply a bit of Ethics for the Preakness & Belmont by requiring a horse to compete in all three races (Kentucky Derby.) If they miss K.D. they forfeit the last two. If they miss Preakness, they forfeit the Belmont. Allow these fresh horses to know what it's like to be gassed the last quarter because of the grueling task of winning all three. It's not a level playing field. Life's not fair. But, we can work at it to make it better. Of course, it's sad if a horse would have to pull out in any of the three for medical or injurious reasons and not have a shot at The Triple Crown. But even sadder is watch these horses lay their guts in the dirt (or mud) and get gassed after performing in the prior Big Two. Sometimes they don't even make a race of it from being shot physically (Big Brown.) We owe these magnificant animals more.

Hey give caviln a break he"s human to all races are differant so no one is to blame things happens. In the belmont MTB was not the best horse yesterday they have there good and bad days the horse"s and jocks. As for mike smith he" not a hall of fame jocky because he cant ride It"s not as easy as it looks to ride a horse so until you become a jocky and make those decisions in split seconds save your bad comments about these jocks both are very good at their job.

(Under) MIne That Bird was used by Borel for his own personal ego trip. That jock should not have been allowed to ride MIne That Bird in the Belmont when he had an obligation, as far as I'm concerned, to stay with MTB in the Preakness. But Borel was more concerned about himself than the horse when it should have been just the opposite, and in the end he lost his 'run for history' by disloyalty, a bad ride on the horse he traded off for himself, and good old karma. Too bad that Mine That Bird, a great athlete from a dusty little stable in southern New Mexico, who had a legitimate chance at a Triple Crown, paid for it as well. It may be that Mine That Bird would have lost anyway, but I guess we will never really know. Too bad.

I hope that Calvin Borel learned a bit of humility. In watching all the pre-belmont stuff, it was clear that he was too confident and let everything go to his head. He's never raced on this track, didn't know how to handle it and said "a race is a race, no matter where it is". I think that Mine The Bird had a good chance to win a Triple Crown had his jockey given him a better shake. As soon as I saw how Calvin was handling it, I placed my bet on Summer Bird and glad I did. Both horses were bred to run the distance but Kent had already won three races prior that day and was on a streak

This should shut Calvin Borel up. He went too early. This is a very good horse and should have won the triple crown. I hope the conections get a new jockey, someone like Eddie Delahoussaye to ride him. Mike Smith also gave him a bad ride.

He was counting on a personal bit of horseracing history. Borel almost did it but even the one he raced down the stretch nosed him for 2nd. When a good horse gets beat its probably the riders mistake or misjudgement to allow it to happen. I blame Calvin. A jockey who wins the triple crown of horseracing rides 2 different horses in triple crown events to victory in all 3 races. KentuckyDerby on Mine That Bird, Preakness on Rachael, then the Belmont back with Mine That Bird. Naah. Oh yes he had a nose lead in the stretch run but that is where a jockey makes all the difference wheteher a horse wins or doesn't. Borel finished 3rd. But he says with his big smile. We tried but wait till next time. :-)

No, Mine That Bird is a gelding. As in, completely cut off. So no, no babies, even test tube babies, for Mine That Bird.
