Haynesfield wins Big A’s Discovery Handicap
NEW YORK (AP)—Haynesfield beat Bad Action by 4 1/2 lengths with 3-5 favorite Gone Astray third on Saturday in the $103,500 Discovery Handicap for 3-year-olds at Aqueduct.
A New York-bred trained by Steve Asmussen, Haynesfield got his sixth win in nine starts.
Redding Colliery set the pace in the 1 1-8 mile race until Haynesfield and Gone Astray moved in tandem on the final turn. What looked like a two-horse stretch battle quickly fizzled as Haynesfield sprinted clear while Gone Astray struggled to keep pace.
Ramon Dominguez was aboard as Haynesfield was clocked in 1:50.10, paying $9.90, $5.20 and $2.60. Bad Action, winner of the Pegasus Stakes at the Meadowlands earlier this month, came on to get second at 14-1, returning $7.30 and $2.80.
It was stunning reversal for Gone Astray following dominant wins in the Pennsylvania and Ohio Derbys. Gone Astray paid $2.10 to show.
Redding Colliery was fourth followed by Birdrun, who stumbled at the start.
