  • A Tour pro charged for clubs? And can't pay?

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. – Rich Beem opened with a 1-under 69 on Thursday at the PGA Championship, his first under-par round on the PGA Tour since 2012. As good as that moment was for the 45-year-old, his week didn’t start that well. Beem, who won the 2002 PGA Championship, rarely plays on Tour and spends his time now working as an analyst for Sky Sports. As he readied for his start at Baltusrol he reached out to Matt Rollins, the Tour rep for Parsons Xtreme Golf (PXG), to order a set of the company’s clubs. He was charged $2,800. That’s when things became a little uncomfortable. PGA Championship: Full-field scores | Live blog: Day 1 | Photo gallery “He gave me a bill, he tried to run my credit card

  • Antonio Brown will accept Brandon Marshall's bet, but he can't 'internet it'

Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall threw down a super-expensive gauntlet recently, challenging Steelers’ Antonio Brown to a car bet over which dominant AFC receiver would have more receiving yards. Marshall, per a video he posted on his Instagram page, offered up his new Porsche for Brown’s Rolls Royce, the one he just drove to training camp, winner take all. “He don’t really wanna do that,” Brown said, per TMZ. “He just wants some PR. He too old to be doing that. “The RR is about $100k up [from the value of the Porsche]. If he really serious, CALL ME … I’ll gladly accept. Don’t Internet it.” We have to agree with Brown. No publicity-seeking challenges. No “interneting it.” Marshall can’t be

  • Report: Clippers exploring leaving Lakers at Staples Center, getting their own arena

The Clippers don’t just play second fiddle to the Lakers in Los Angeles. They play second fiddle to the Lakers in their own arena. Unless the Clippers want to move from the NBA’s second-biggest market, the former isn’t changing. The Latter? Kevin Arnovitz of ESPN: The Clippers want to escape the Lakers’ shadow. Leaving the Staples Center wouldn’t turn the Clippers into L.A.’s team, but it’d give them a new avenue for attention — and revenue. Of course, if the Clippers stay in the Staples Center, they’ll want the best terms possible. Leaking interest in a new arena only helps their bargaining position.

  • Here's Karl-Anthony Towns dunking on all the children

In 2005, my friends and I took great interest in a McSweeney’s article titled “A Realistic Assessment of How Many 12-Year-Olds I Could Beat Up Before They Overtook Me.” It is exactly what it sounds like — author Matt Schweiger investigates how he, a 21-year-old of fairly average size, would do in a fight against an ever-growing number of pre-teen boys. Minnesota Timberwolves center and reigning Rookie of the Year Karl-Anthony Towns is apparently trying to test his own version of this game. Honestly, they should just turn the camp into a full-on experiment to see how many kids Towns can take on.

  • Carmelo Anthony predicts Knicks-Bulls on Christmas or opening night

Carmelo Anthony said the Knicks should have gotten a Christmas game last year. In hindsight, the NBA reportedly agreed. So, Anthony expects New York to get a marquee matchup — against the Bulls — on either Christmas or opening night. Chris Herring of The Wall Street Journal: The storylines are overflowing. The Knicks added Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah — two former Bulls — to join Anthony, who strongly considered Chicago in his last free agency. The Bulls answered with a couple big names: Dwyane Wade and Rajon Rondo. They’ll join Jimmy Butler, whose stature is only growing — just like Kristaps Porzingis in New York. Those are plenty of attention-drawing players, and the league will want to capitalize,

  • Chris Archer’s up-and-down season continues amid trade speculation

Amid trade rumors, Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer fell to 5-14 after losing Tuesday. LOS ANGELES – Sometimes it’s no more than a few inches across 100 pitches or more, “This close,” Chris Archer was saying, holding his thumb and forefinger the breadth of one of those inches, not that that excuses anything that’s gone on for the Tampa Bay Rays or, for that matter, Chris Archer. It’s late Tuesday night and he’s given up a couple unearned runs and one very long home run, those dovetailing with the Rays’ fourth consecutive loss, all by one run, and his 14th loss, not that those fairly represent where he’s been or, perhaps, where he’s going.

  • Ex-NBA player hits Twitter, begs teams to give him one more chance

Von Wafer of the Boston Celtics reacts after scoring against the Miami Heat on Feb. 13, 2011. It’s been four years since Von Wafer last played in the NBA, and, from the sound of it, that’s quite long enough for him, thanks. The 31-year-old shooting guard, a former McDonald’s All-American and second-round draft pick out of Florida State, last saw an NBA court with the Orlando Magic in May of 2012.

As the 2016 off-season unfolded, the Seahawks expected their coach, Pete Carroll, to emphasize the tenets of what he calls his program. Carroll realized the danger inherent there, and true to form—his being fluid, wacky and largely unconventional—he altered his approach.

  • Mane to Liverpool could be best under-the-radar Premier League signing

Fans who turned out at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday hoping to see Liverpool parading its stars against Premier League rivals Chelsea in the two sides’ International Champions Cup clash may have been somewhat disappointed. What fans got from Liverpool instead could be a glimpse of the future. For while Chelsea manager Antonio Conte fielded something akin to a Premier League starting XI, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp opted to debut a number of his new signings.

Paul Pierce can’t stop, and he won’t stop. Paul Pierce was not good last season, and it pains me to say that, since The Truth was everything to a 20-something who did dumb things in Boston during the early 2000s before becoming a fully realized professional, because he was me. My post-college life in Boston coincided almost entirely with Pierce’s 15 seasons there, and our paths crossed for a few years after I began covering the Celtics in 2010.

  • Rosberg doubles up in second Friday practice for German GP

Nico Rosberg made it two-for-two in practice for the German Grand Prix by topping the timesheets at Hockenheim for Mercedes on Friday afternoon. 2014 winner Rosberg topped the opening practice session on Friday morning at Hockenheim before underpinning Mercedes’ impressive pace by leading FP2, beating teammate Lewis Hamilton once again. Rosberg posted a fastest lap time of 1:15.614 to beat Hamilton by almost four-tenths of a second on the super-soft tire, sending out a firm warning to his title rival ahead of qualifying on Saturday. Hamilton had a scare after coming across Daniel Ricciardo while exiting the pits late on, but escaped unscathed, although not without telling his team and FIA race director Charlie Whiting over the radio that he felt the Red Bull driver had got too close for comfort.

Madison Bumgarner isn’t the only Giants pitcher who can rake. Matt Cain crushed a three-run home run during Tuesday’s game against the Giants. Cain stepped to the plate with runners on the corner and one out against Reds starter Cody Reed in the bottom of the second inning. Reed threw a 1-1 fastball down the middle and Cain hit it about 20 rows back in the left field seats. It’s Cain’s first homer of the season, his first since 2012, and the seventh of his 12-year career. He still has some work to catch up to Bumgarner, who has two homers this year and 13 in his career. On the pitching side of things, Cain got the win against the Reds on Tuesday night, giving up four runs on six hits and a walk
