When the world's best golfers tee it up starting Thursday at the U.S. Open, they won't have nearly as far as usual to reach the pins. That’s because Merion Golf Club, home of the 113th Open, will be the first course in years to play under 7,000 yards.
The USGA, which runs the Open, has never cared much for the bomb-and-pitch style of modern golf. As a result, Merion will demand both precision off the tee and grace from the fairway.
