World number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic crashed out of the Madrid Masters on May 11, vowing never to return to play on the tournament's controversial blue clay. Earlier in the day, tournament supremo Ion Tiriac was forced to apologise for the anger felt by the players toward the surface.
