  • Adam Silver doesn't love the 1+1 deals signed by LeBron and Durant

One of the weirdest things about Kevin Durant’s decision to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder for the Golden State Warriors is that he’s not committed to his new club past the 2016-17 season. Durant signed a two-year deal with Golden State that includes a player option on the second season, and no one believes he’ll actually accept it. LeBron James has signed similar deals with the Cleveland Cavaliers in each of the past two offseasons, and he figures to do the same thing in upcoming weeks in advance of getting his own record-shattering contract next summer.

  • Huge If True: Will Canucks take on Evander Kane?

Last week in this space, we discussed whether the Vancouver Canucks would be able to trade for a scoring winger. At the time, though, the idea that Evander Kane would be the target was a little farfetched. Kane was arrested late last week for allegedly harassing three women, and potentially choking and pulling the hair of one of them.

  • This scary tandem could make life easier for Jimmy Garoppolo

Whether it was Tom Brady or Jimmy Garoppolo, the pieces surrounding the New England Patriots’ starting quarterback swapped and shuttled in and out of positional groupings Thursday. This is every training camp for coach Bill Belichick, a few weeks when depth charts and lineups fall into a nebulous mix of tinkering and unlikelihood. It’s a challenge figuring out where the Patriots’ roster construction is headed in July.

  • Mane to Liverpool could be best under-the-radar Premier League signing

Fans who turned out at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday hoping to see Liverpool parading its stars against Premier League rivals Chelsea in the two sides’ International Champions Cup clash may have been somewhat disappointed. What fans got from Liverpool instead could be a glimpse of the future. For while Chelsea manager Antonio Conte fielded something akin to a Premier League starting XI, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp opted to debut a number of his new signings.

  • Back in Chicago, Dwyane Wade hits stage in Lollapalooza surprise

Dwyane Wade performs on-stage at the Bud Light Stage Moment at Lollapalooza at Grant Park on July 28, 2016 in Chicago, Illinois. Three weeks after agreeing to terms on one of the more stunning deals of the summer, the Chicago Bulls will introduce Dwyane Wade at a Friday afternoon press conference. The All-Star shooting guard got to town a bit early, though — early enough to check out a crosstown interleague baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox, and to make a special appearance at the opening of Lollapalooza, the massive music festival held each summer in Chicago’s Grant Park.

  • Doc Rivers: If Paul Pierce retires, Clippers would let him join Celtics first

Clippers forward Paul Pierce is mulling retirement, which would mean another franchise icon could leave the NBA this summer — Lakers great Kobe Bryant, Spurs great Tim Duncan and Celtics great Pierce. However, unlike Kobe and Duncan, Pierce left his original team. Personally, I don’t think stints with the Nets, Wizards and Clippers do much to diminish Pierce’s Boston bona fides. Everyone will remember him as a Celtic. Fifteen years and a championship in Boston will do that. But just in case you need more reason to tie Pierce to the Celtics, Clippers president/coach and Pierce’s former Boston coach Doc Rivers has a plan. With the car he drove to a dominating Coca-Cola 600 win, Martin Truex Jr. claimed the pole for the Pennsylvania 400 at Pocono Raceway. It is his third pole of the season and his first since the Coke 600. Truex grabbed the pole with a speed of 179.244 mph, the only car in the final round to top 179 mph. “This is the car we had at Charlotte,” Truex told NBCSN’s Parker Kligerman, referring to the car that led 392 of 400 laps in that race. “I don’t know, something about it just feels right to me.” The driver of the No. 78 Toyota for Furniture Row Racing now has 10 poles in his Sprint Cup career. The team will look to improve on its last appearance at Pocono when it started 17th and finished 19th

  • Answer a Kevin Durant question? Don’t make Russell Westbrook laugh

Nice try, but Russell Westbrook’s lips remain sealed. Russell Westbrook has FINALLY broken his silence on Kevin Durant’s decision to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder and join the Golden State Warriors! Well … kind of. Hey, a loud laugh in response to the question, “How you feel about Durant, man?” is noise! That technically means the silence is broken … even if Russ didn’t actually say anything, and if we don’t know for sure whether that laugh means anything more than, “I am 100 percent not going to answer that question.” It counts!

The team placed both McClain and Randy Gregory on the reserve/did not report list, opening up two roster spots. Where the Cowboys knew that Gregory wouldn’t be showing – news came Monday that he was checking into a treatment facility for an unspecified problem – it appears McClain being M.I.A. is a surprise.

19-year-old US gymnast Simone Biles is expected to be one of the breakout stars in Rio in her first Olympics this year. During one of her turns, Biles winked at the sidelines — it was later revealed that she was winking at Johnson. "I was taken back by that wink, because I remember in my floor routines, I didn't even know — I probably couldn't have told you my name in the middle of it, let alone thought to look at

The Golden State Warriors have a reputation as one of the NBA’s most joyous and watchable teams, but this summer has threatened to make their 2016-17 season deathly serious. Last season proved to be fool’s gold early — a 6-0 start despite losing Jordy Nelson — once the 5-11 San Francisco 49ers showed the design of how to short circuit the Packers’ once-feared offense: daring the Packers to throw by playing press coverage with a single-high safety.
