  • 2016 BIG TEN POWER RANKINGS: I have Ohio State 3rd, and I regret it already

At the end of each conference run-through, I take a look at how I perceive the conference's balance of power heading into the season. This is in no way based on schedules, so they are not predictions. This is just how I would rank the teams after writing thousands of words about each of them. When I finished all of the Group of Five conferences, I compiled a full mid-major power rankings list. Now we're into the power conferences; here's the ACC, and here's the Pac-12. Each team's name below links to its full preview. Tier 1 1. Michigan 2. Michigan State 3. Ohio State I've gone back and forth on this constantly. As you see below, all three of these teams have low numbers in returning production.

  • Latest on Jonathan Lucroy: Asking price is steep, talks heating up

The Mets are among several teams to contact the Brewers about acquiring 30-year-old, All-Star C Jonathan Lucroy... Latest Update (July 28): 10:15 am: Teams interested in Lucroy feel Milwaukee's asking price is too steep, and could drop the closer they get to Monday's 4 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline, MetsBlog's Matthew Cerrone tweeted. 10:05 am: Trade talks with teams interested in Lucroy are staring to pick up momentum, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick, who says the Mets, Indians, Rangers, Astros and Red Sox have all been in contact with Milwaukee. In exchange for Lucroy, the Brewers are looking to acquire high-end prospects and a catcher, FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reported late July

  • Two years ago, Jaworski saw clear gap between Nick Foles and Russell Wilson

Three years ago, ESPN’s Ron Jaworski cooked up one of the hottest takes of all time, taking the position that quarterback Colin Kaepernick could be one of the best quarterbacks of all time. Jaworski’s opinion somehow became news for his employer, feeding the four-letter network’s engine for several days in August 2013. A year later, Jaworski offered up an even hotter — but far less memorable — take regarding quarterbacks Nick Foles and Russell Wilson. Given a choice between the two, which would he pick? “I’m taking Foles,” Jaworski said. “Not even close. Russell Wilson is just . . . because of that system he is in. Russell Wilson plays with that defense, the best in football. He just managed

  • One NBA team is already preparing for an ugly Stephen Curry-Kevin Durant divorce

Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant have played exactly zero minutes together as Golden State Warriors teammates, so we have no real idea how the two will work together. The rest of the NBA, meanwhile, is hoping that things go south, and one of them is actively planning on it. “There are 29 teams hoping the chemistry between Kevin Durant and Steph Curry is poisonous, but there is one team that is planning for it. It’s probably a fool’s errand to guess the name of the “title contender” here, but we can probably narrow it down to a handful of teams: The Cavaliers, Clippers and Spurs, plus maybe the Raptors or Thunder, and if you get expansive with your definition you could probably throw in the league’s 48-34 foursome (Celtics, Heat, Hawks and Hornets, who all finished with the same regular season record).

  • Brock Lesnar WWE Wellness Policy Exemption Considered Unfair ‘Double Standard’ Backstage

When news first broke that Brock Lesnar would not be suspended by WWE for failing two UFC drug tests, superstars backstage were pretty upset. But now that the word has gotten out that Brock is completely exempt from the policy altogether, the feelings in the locker room have reportedly flowered into outrage over the double standard of the Wellness Policy. According to Dave Meltzer in the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer newsletter, when the locker room learned that Lesnar has never been tested at any time under the Wellness Policy, performers declared this to be an unfair double standard due in large part to the nature of part-timers’ contracts already: While no performer in WWE is likely

  • Video: Matt Cain launches a three-run home run

Madison Bumgarner isn’t the only Giants pitcher who can rake. Matt Cain crushed a three-run home run during Tuesday’s game against the Giants. Cain stepped to the plate with runners on the corner and one out against Reds starter Cody Reed in the bottom of the second inning. Reed threw a 1-1 fastball down the middle and Cain hit it about 20 rows back in the left field seats. It’s Cain’s first homer of the season, his first since 2012, and the seventh of his 12-year career. He still has some work to catch up to Bumgarner, who has two homers this year and 13 in his career. On the pitching side of things, Cain got the win against the Reds on Tuesday night, giving up four runs on six hits and a walk

  • Huge If True: Will Canucks take on Evander Kane?

Last week in this space, we discussed whether the Vancouver Canucks would be able to trade for a scoring winger. At the time, though, the idea that Evander Kane would be the target was a little farfetched. Kane was arrested late last week for allegedly harassing three women, and potentially choking and pulling the hair of one of them.

The long summer break ends today for the New York Giants as they report to the Quest Diagnostics Training Center for physicals and conditioning. It will be the first summer in 12 years without former head coach Tom Coughlin at the helm. Ben McAdoo is now the head man and he is excited to get cracking. "We started to establish our identity- without pads- but sound, smart and tough, committed to discipline and poise," McAdoo said at the end of minicamp in June. "We know what it looks like now. We had a chance to sit down, we had a chance to define it and lay the foundation for when we do get the pads on." The first training camp session will be held on Friday morning. The team will hold 11 practices

  • Carmelo Anthony predicts Knicks-Bulls on Christmas or opening night

Carmelo Anthony said the Knicks should have gotten a Christmas game last year. In hindsight, the NBA reportedly agreed. So, Anthony expects New York to get a marquee matchup — against the Bulls — on either Christmas or opening night. Chris Herring of The Wall Street Journal: The storylines are overflowing. The Knicks added Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah — two former Bulls — to join Anthony, who strongly considered Chicago in his last free agency. The Bulls answered with a couple big names: Dwyane Wade and Rajon Rondo. They’ll join Jimmy Butler, whose stature is only growing — just like Kristaps Porzingis in New York. Those are plenty of attention-drawing players, and the league will want to capitalize,

  • Detroit Tigers add much-needed component of physical pain to 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' contest

For too long, the game “Rock, Paper, Scissors” has been relegated to the realm of the trivial, used more often to determine mundane obligations like who’s going to walk to the store to buy more beer than meaningful outcomes like who’s going to get wailed over the head with an empty water jug. Luckily, the Detroit Tigers have set out to right this wrong: From Justin Verlander’s Instagram comes evidence of the Tigers’ high-stakes version of “Rock, Paper, Scissors.” In the above video, second baseman Ian Kinsler throws scissors while shortstop Jose Iglesias throws paper, and because scissors cut paper, Kinsler gets to wallop Iglesias on the head with the water jug. Kinsler, of course, is an excellent

  • How Nick Foles’ Release Just Made Ryan Fitzpatrick A Nice Chunk Of Change

Nick Foles might be the dumbest man in American, but at least one other NFL quarterback should be thanking him for it. Foles, the Los Angeles Rams quarterback, reportedly was released by the team Wednesday at his request. The 27-year-old was set to make up to $8.75 million this season, per Spotrac, but has been upset since the team selected quarterback Jared Goff with the No. 1 overall selection in the NFL draft earlier this year. Apparently getting paid nearly $9 million to live in L.A. — where it’s 75 and sunny all the time — for a year just wasn’t good enough for the now ex-Ram. Meanwhile, ESPN’s Ed Werder dropped this little nugget regarding the ripple effect Foles’ situation had on free
