  • Eagles Training Camp Preview: We’re So Screwed

The Eagles’ full training camp got underway Thursday and I’m already worried. In fact, I have seen nothing from this team thus far in training camp that gives me any confidence that they can compete this season.  The Sam Bradford/Carson Wentz thing hasn’t been resolved at all. We already had no running backs to speak of, and now Ryan Mathews is hurt. And then Nigel Badham got arrested for assaulting a hotel employee in Miami -- I know I’ve been saying for awhile that the Eagles need guys on defense who “punch people in the mouth,” but that’s not what I meant.  There’s another thing that makes me question what the hell the Eagles are doing: I don’t care if he’s the long snapper -- letting a player

  • Latest on Jonathan Lucroy: Asking price is steep, talks heating up

The Mets are among several teams to contact the Brewers about acquiring 30-year-old, All-Star C Jonathan Lucroy... Latest Update (July 28): 10:15 am: Teams interested in Lucroy feel Milwaukee's asking price is too steep, and could drop the closer they get to Monday's 4 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline, MetsBlog's Matthew Cerrone tweeted. 10:05 am: Trade talks with teams interested in Lucroy are staring to pick up momentum, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick, who says the Mets, Indians, Rangers, Astros and Red Sox have all been in contact with Milwaukee. In exchange for Lucroy, the Brewers are looking to acquire high-end prospects and a catcher, FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reported late July

  • Report: If Durant/Curry relationship goes south, teams will try to poach Stephen Curry. Well, duh.

There are a handful of true game-changing players in the NBA. Not max players, there are a chunk of those, we’re talking “you can build a contender around him” guys. Kevin Durant is one, and he is headed to Golden State. Stephen Curry is another. And he is a free agent next summer. So many teams — including one contender — are ready if the Durant/Curry relationship goes south, reports Ric Bucher of Bleacher Report. Well, duh. Again, there are not many Curry level players; teams should have a “what if” plan. Including contenders. That is very different than saying Curry is going to leave the Warriors — nobody around the league sees that as likely. Nobody expects a “poisonous” Durant/Curry relationship.

  • This video of Lionel Messi in training is just glorious (Luis Suárez nutmeg included)

Lionel Messi is awesome. Not only did he cut his vacation short so he could rejoin the Barcelona squad a week earlier to train with his teammates in England and play every friendly match in preseason, he is also using the training sessions  to show just how amazing he is. These are just 140 seconds of greatness. Messi is laughing in the Rondos as he makes his teammates look like fools, he's dribbling Mathieu like he's not even there, and he's even nutmegging his good friend Luis Suárez just because why not. He's also scoring goals on little posts, because every goalpost is big enough for Messi. Just wish Messi was not blonde. But hey, you can't always get what you want. Still, Messi, you're awesome.

  • David Wright is not alone in naming his child after Shea Stadium

New York Mets third baseman David Wright and his wife, Molly, welcomed a daughter into the world over the weekend and named her Olivia Shea Wright, leading to mass speculation in the media in New York that the Wrights gave their daughter a middle name in honor of the stadium the Mets called home from 1964-2008. The Wall Street Journal went to the trouble of examining baby names in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut over the past 40 years to see how many people possibly named their kids Shea and if there might be a correlation to the Mets and Shea Stadium.

  • 2016 NFL Preview: Vikings hope to get Adrian Peterson to a Super Bowl

Shutdown Corner is previewing all 32 teams as we get ready for the NFL season, counting down the teams one per day in reverse order of our initial 2016 power rankings. There are probably two categories of Minnesota Vikings fans: Ones who have convinced themselves that Adrian Peterson is a superhero and will be a Hall of Fame running back forever, and the ones who worry if the rest of the Vikings will peak when Peterson is still in his prime. Back then Peterson was destined to be the NFL’s Ernie Banks and never play for a championship, at least for Minnesota.

The Heat signed Dion Waiters to a room-exception contract. Heat president Pat Riley, via Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald: “Dion is not a Room Exception player. He wanted to play for the Miami Heat and chose to forgo other more lucrative financial opportunities to be a part of our championship organization. We are very honored that he made the commitment to come to South Florida and sign with us. Dion is young, athletic and explosive, which fits in with our roster. He will add a great dimension for us at the off-guard spot. I really like the depth and versatility that we now have in our perimeter positions. Welcome aboard Dion!” I’m really curious about those “more lucrative financial opportunities.”

  • Giants report to training camp today for physicals and conditioning

The long summer break ends today for the New York Giants as they report to the Quest Diagnostics Training Center for physicals and conditioning. It will be the first summer in 12 years without former head coach Tom Coughlin at the helm. Ben McAdoo is now the head man and he is excited to get cracking. "We started to establish our identity- without pads- but sound, smart and tough, committed to discipline and poise," McAdoo said at the end of minicamp in June. "We know what it looks like now. We had a chance to sit down, we had a chance to define it and lay the foundation for when we do get the pads on." The first training camp session will be held on Friday morning. The team will hold 11 practices

  • Two years ago, Jaworski saw clear gap between Nick Foles and Russell Wilson

Three years ago, ESPN’s Ron Jaworski cooked up one of the hottest takes of all time, taking the position that quarterback Colin Kaepernick could be one of the best quarterbacks of all time. Jaworski’s opinion somehow became news for his employer, feeding the four-letter network’s engine for several days in August 2013. A year later, Jaworski offered up an even hotter — but far less memorable — take regarding quarterbacks Nick Foles and Russell Wilson. Given a choice between the two, which would he pick? “I’m taking Foles,” Jaworski said. “Not even close. Russell Wilson is just . . . because of that system he is in. Russell Wilson plays with that defense, the best in football. He just managed
