  • Did NHL teams suck fun out of 3-on-3 OT? (Trending Topics)

A little more than a year ago, the NHL announced that it had officially adopted a 3-on-3 overtime as a means of juicing goal-scoring in the league and avoiding the shootout to as great an extent as possible. At the time, we had little understanding of what the NHL looked like at 3-on-3. From 2007 through the end of 2014-15, all NHL teams combined had played a grand combined total of just 87 minutes in that strength situation.

Pedroia sent a line drive foul ball into the stands behind the first-base dugout where a boy raised his mitt and snagged the ball, undoubtedly saving someone in the crowd from either being hit or coming close to a painful experience. The catch was nice enough but what made this moment even better was the crowd giving the young Boston fan a nice ovation and him soaking it in with a bow.

It’s not the prettiest picture, but it means a lot: While setting up the first sheet of ice is a physical sign that things are coming together, the front office side will dictate the sort of team that eventually plays on it. For more insight into that process, Puck Daddy takes a look at Murray Craven, who appears to be a key part of bringing things together … even if it’s difficult to
