US Olympic great Michael  Phelps at the American Century Championship on Thursday, July 18. 2013  is Phelps’ first year at the Lake Tahoe-based celebrity golf tournament. Answering questions at a press conference, he commented on how long it  would take him to traverse Lake Tahoe. “Six hours. I’m not very fast anymore. I don’t swim anymore,” Phelps quipped. Phelps, who estimates his golf handicap to be 18 or 19, has participated in several pro-am  golf tournaments since appearing on The Haney Project on the Golf  Channel. On his golf game before getting help from Hank Haney, Tiger  Woods’ former swing coach: “I was terrible, like the worst,” Phelps said  lightheartedly. “I don't understand how it can be that hard to hit this little tiny white ball and hit it straight every time,” Phelps added. “It just doesn’t happen for me.” The tournament will be televised live  on NBC Sports Network Friday and NBC Saturday and Sunday. Photo by Jeff  Bayer.
