As hundreds of VHP leaders were arrested by the UP police on Sunday, a few political leaders have labelled the Ayodhya showdown as “match-fixing” between Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “Food Security Bill is hanging. I am not speaking against Mulayam Singh Yadav. There is match fixing. This is a case of friendly fight,” Congress leader Beni Prasad Verma was quoted by First Post as saying when asked about SP's ban on VHP's yatra in Ayodhya.

Earlier, a defiant VHP had declared that it will go ahead with the 'Chaurasi Kosi Parikrama' yatra from August 25 to September 13. The yatra has been banned by the ruling Samajwadi Party govt fearing a communal flare-up.
