Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo went down with another back injury during the team’s preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. At first, it looked like “America’s Team” lost the 2016 season for good. Despite owner/General Manager Jerry Jones’s best ego-driven attempts at destroying their roster, the Dallas Cowboys built a team capable of contending in the NFC (credit actually goes to Jones’s son, Stephen, and his team of scouts and executives) — if an above-average starting quarterback remains on the roster. As it turns out, the Cowboys may be better off without Romo in their lineup — if Jones lets it happen. In our opinion, Dallas has the premier offensive line in the NFL.
Maybe Talladega was the “lay up” race of the third round? Joe Gibbs Racing’s four cars represent half of the eight drivers advancing to the third round of the Chase. Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth entered Sunday’s race with hefty points advantages over ninth place.
Hillary Clinton's travelling press secretary captured the moment that the Democratic presidential candidate learned that her beloved Chicago Cubs are headed to the World Series. Nick Merrill snapped the photo Saturday night onboard the campaign plane, where Clinton -- who was raised in the Chicago suburb of Park Ridge -- was handed a phone and watched highlights from the game. The Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-0. It will be the team's first time in the World Series since 1945. "That look when you cap off a day on the trail by watching the @Cubs cement their trip to the #WorldSeries. #FlyTheW," tweeted Merrill. The game had just ended as Clinton was boarding a plane in Philadelphia, where
On paper, Chinese center Yi Jianlian made a lot of sense for the Lakers, especially in Luke Walton’s system — he was the only floor spacing big on the roster. Watching Yi at the Olympics, it was easy to imagine it working out for him in the NBA this time around. In practice, he was struggling to find a consistent role with the team. He had averaged less than 11 minutes a game in the preseason, shooting 35 percent overall and 16.7 percent from three. His defense wasn’t good, and he remains a player who doesn’t exactly have a high motor. With Julius Randle, Larry Nance, Timofey Mozgov, and Tarik Black, Yi wasn’t finding a consistent niche. So he has asked out of his contract and the Lakers are

She represented Germany at the 1928 Amsterdam Summer Olympics, bringing home a gold medal. Four years later, she competed in the Los Angeles Games. Two hours before her final matches, she learned that her boyfriend had died in a military training accident. She finished fifth. Mayer stayed in California and attended college for international law, hoping to perhaps become a diplomat for her country one day. In 1933, Hitler and the Nazi Party took power in Germany, and quickly set to work stripping away the rights of Jewish citizens — including Mayer, whose father was Jewish. Mayer’s membership in her hometown fencing club was revoked, and it became clear she could not return to Germany. The former
The Los Angeles Kings’ goaltending injuries this season have had a trickle-down effect with their minor league team, the AHL’s Ontario Reign. Jack Campbell was an emergency recall for the Kings after goalie Jeff Zatkoff was injured in a morning skate, leaving the Reign to start 22-year-old prospect Jonah Imoo against San Jose on Saturday night. It’s his AHL debut, having previously played in the Federal Hockey League and the Southern Professional Hockey League.
LONDON — Chelsea beat Manchester United 4-0 on Sunday in an unhappy return to Stamford Bridge for Jose Mourinho. First half goals from Pedro and Gary Cahill set them on their way and then Eden Hazard and N'Golo Kante added gloss to the scoreline as United unraveled as Chelsea went into the top four. Here’s what we learned from a humbling afternoon for Mourinho back in west London. NIGHTMARE RETURN FOR MOURINHO “You’re not special anymore!” “You’re getting sacked in the morning!” “Who are ya? Who are ya?” Those were just sum of the chants directed at Manchester United’s manager Jose Mourinho on his first return to Chelsea since he was sacked last December. It was an incredibly uncomfortable afternoon
There’s a little more than a week until the first official College Football Playoff rankings are announced, and there are still a handful of teams that could make the Top 4. As we saw Saturday with Ohio State, it’s difficult to stay at the top of the heap and more often than not the teams that appear at the top of the first CFP rankings aren’t necessarily the teams that go on to actually play in the playoff. Alabama: Can anyone topple the Tide? For a moment on Saturday, Texas A&M made it look possible, but a few mistakes later and the Tide were heading off the field with another dominant victory.
Michael Crabtree is one unsportsmanlike conduct penalty from an automatic ejection after getting penalized for doing nothing wrong. Oakland Raiders wide receiver Michael Crabtree wasn’t able to avoid the penalty Sunday, even though he didn’t even do one. Crabtree celebrated a 2-yard touchdown pass against the Jacksonville Jaguars just before halftime by tossing the ball.

Two more former NFL players have weighed in on NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and his mishandling of the situation with New York Giants kicker Josh Brown. Randy Moss, during a segment on ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown” discussing Brown and the league continuing to bungle domestic violence cases, put things squarely on Goodell’s shoulders.
TALLADEGA, Ala.—Teammates Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch are moving on together to the next round of the Chase. Harvick was angry enough that he stormed over to Busch’s car on pit road and punched at something—helmet, post, whatever—hard enough to rock the entire car on its chassis. Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch have words.
Former U.S. women’s national team star Lauren Holiday had surgery on Thursday to remove a brain tumor. She was diagnosed with a benign, operable brain tumor in June while carrying her child with New Orleans Pelicans player Jrue Holiday, and doctors induced birth early to expedite surgery which was slated for Thursday. Many friends and fans sent well-wishes to Holiday on social media as she prepared to undergo surgery: At their game on Wednesday, USWNT players wore wristbands that said LH12, for Holiday’s initials and the number she wore on her jersey. Teammates still call her “Cheney,” which is her maiden name: There have been no updates from Holiday or her husband since the surgery and information
After the Cleveland Indians knocked off the Toronto Blue Jays last week to win the American League pennant, Northeast Ohioans found their elation at the Tribe earning the right to play for their first Major League Baseball championship in 68 years briefly punctured by a sticky sports fandom dilemma. Game 1 of the 2016 World Series between the Indians and Chicago Cubs — who, as you might have heard, also haven’t won a title in a while — will take place at Progressive Field in Cleveland, and begin Tuesday night, Oct. 25, at 8:08 p.m. Eastern time.
The “Clayton Kershaw can’t pitch in the postseason” narrative is alive and well. After coming up big during the Los Angeles Dodgers’ first two playoff series, Kershaw was saddled with the loss as the Chicago Cubs beat the Dodgers 5-0 in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series. With the Dodgers facing elimination, the 28-year-old ace gave up five runs, four earned, on seven hits over five innings.
The knock on James Franklin during his time at Penn State has been his teams coming up small in the biggest games. In front of a raucous whiteout crowd Saturday night at Beaver Stadium, the unranked Nittany Lions upset No. 2 Ohio State, 24-21. The Nittany Lions overcame a 21-7 fourth-quarter deficit to complete the comeback.
Dressed in sparkling gold, Gracie Gold arrived at Skate America, the kickoff event of the new figure skating season, hoping to reassert herself as the nation’s pre-eminent skater 16 months before the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. Instead, she followed a shaky short program Friday evening with a poor long program Saturday afternoon, falling twice to drop to fifth place in the 11-woman field, finishing 12 points behind the winner, Ashley Wagner, her American teammate and rival who is still riding the momentum of winning the world silver medal last spring. Within minutes of leaving the ice, Gold, 21, the two-time U.S. national champion, spoke alarmingly about the pressure she feels. “We just need to adjust my physical shape and mental shape to see if the program can be salvaged for the rest of the year,” she said.
AMG Mercedes F1 team driver Lewis Hamilton took the pole in the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The 31-year-old Brit turned a lap nearly a quarter second faster than his teammate, Nico Rosberg. That’s practically
The Steelers knew that without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger yesterday, other parts of the roster were going to have to play better. They decidedly did not, and Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier owned his part of it. “We’re looking like garbage right now,” Shazier said, via Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “[Opposing offenses] can do whatever they want to do right now.” While harsh in tone, it may also not be inaccurate, as the Patriots hit them for enough big plays to turn an otherwise decent day into a loss. Of the 362 yards allowed (below their average), the Patriots gained 117 of them on four plays, two of them deep balls to tight end Rob Gronkowski. Those chunk plays were
Car owner Roger Penske’s Sprint Cup teams never won a restrictor-plate race until the 2008 Daytona 500. Joey Logano’s victory Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway — the sixth in the last nine plate races for Team Penske — evokes memories of Dale Earnhardt Inc.’s dominance and Hendrick Motorsports’ success. Only DEI, which won nine of 12 plate races from 2001-03, has a better winning percentage over multiple seasons at such tracks than Penske.
"I just want to do a positive dialogue because I'm sick of arguing over race all the time," Barkley said. "Like, I'm very aware that racism does exist, it always has and probably always will, but the media does a really poor job. There's more good than bad, but the bad pops off the newspaper and on television. And like I said, the truth is somewhere in the middle." On one hand, he seems an unlikely choice to be looking for it. In a Nike commercial during his playing career, he said himself he's no role model , and he still doesn't like the term now. And wearing a Ralph Lauren sweater and matching brown slacks during a lunch at a Manhattan restaurant Tuesday before slipping into a tuxedo for the
The Mets want to bring back Yoenis Cespedes, "but they probably wouldn't chase him if he got an enormous long-term deal elsewhere," given his age and the streaky nature of his production, according to weekend report from ESPN.com's Buster Olney. According to multiple reports, Cespedes is expected to opt out of his three-year contract and become a free agent. There is mutual interest in having him return to the Mets. However, "There is no urgency," a source told Olney, who says the Mets are open to effectively updating his current deal with another opt-out clause. Cespedes has until three days after the end of the World Series to decide whether to opt out of his current contract with the Mets, ESPN.com's
