• This video of Lionel Messi in training is just glorious (Luis Suárez nutmeg included)

Lionel Messi is awesome. Not only did he cut his vacation short so he could rejoin the Barcelona squad a week earlier to train with his teammates in England and play every friendly match in preseason, he is also using the training sessions  to show just how amazing he is. These are just 140 seconds of greatness. Messi is laughing in the Rondos as he makes his teammates look like fools, he's dribbling Mathieu like he's not even there, and he's even nutmegging his good friend Luis Suárez just because why not. He's also scoring goals on little posts, because every goalpost is big enough for Messi. Just wish Messi was not blonde. But hey, you can't always get what you want. Still, Messi, you're awesome.

  • Brock Lesnar WWE Wellness Policy Exemption Considered Unfair ‘Double Standard’ Backstage

When news first broke that Brock Lesnar would not be suspended by WWE for failing two UFC drug tests, superstars backstage were pretty upset. But now that the word has gotten out that Brock is completely exempt from the policy altogether, the feelings in the locker room have reportedly flowered into outrage over the double standard of the Wellness Policy. According to Dave Meltzer in the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer newsletter, when the locker room learned that Lesnar has never been tested at any time under the Wellness Policy, performers declared this to be an unfair double standard due in large part to the nature of part-timers’ contracts already: While no performer in WWE is likely

  • Two years ago, Jaworski saw clear gap between Nick Foles and Russell Wilson

Three years ago, ESPN’s Ron Jaworski cooked up one of the hottest takes of all time, taking the position that quarterback Colin Kaepernick could be one of the best quarterbacks of all time. Jaworski’s opinion somehow became news for his employer, feeding the four-letter network’s engine for several days in August 2013. A year later, Jaworski offered up an even hotter — but far less memorable — take regarding quarterbacks Nick Foles and Russell Wilson. Given a choice between the two, which would he pick? “I’m taking Foles,” Jaworski said. “Not even close. Russell Wilson is just . . . because of that system he is in. Russell Wilson plays with that defense, the best in football. He just managed

At the preceding two majors, Rory bolted from the grounds without talking to the press and then shattered a club in half. Rory McIlroy started his week at the PGA Championship saying he was "running out of patience" with his game. It will probably be an overreaction, as is often the case with Rory.

  • 2016 NFL Preview: Vikings hope to get Adrian Peterson to a Super Bowl

Shutdown Corner is previewing all 32 teams as we get ready for the NFL season, counting down the teams one per day in reverse order of our initial 2016 power rankings. There are probably two categories of Minnesota Vikings fans: Ones who have convinced themselves that Adrian Peterson is a superhero and will be a Hall of Fame running back forever, and the ones who worry if the rest of the Vikings will peak when Peterson is still in his prime. Back then Peterson was destined to be the NFL’s Ernie Banks and never play for a championship, at least for Minnesota.

  • Pat Riley: Dion Waiters ‘is not a room-exception player’

The Heat signed Dion Waiters to a room-exception contract. Heat president Pat Riley, via Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald: “Dion is not a Room Exception player. He wanted to play for the Miami Heat and chose to forgo other more lucrative financial opportunities to be a part of our championship organization. We are very honored that he made the commitment to come to South Florida and sign with us. Dion is young, athletic and explosive, which fits in with our roster. He will add a great dimension for us at the off-guard spot. I really like the depth and versatility that we now have in our perimeter positions. Welcome aboard Dion!” I’m really curious about those “more lucrative financial opportunities.”

  • Gedion Zelalem to decide future after USA tour

Gedion Zelalem, the 19-year old American midfielder, will make a decision on his future following Arsenal's pre-season camp in the United States. The midfielder has been a regular during pre-season for Arsenal, first making his name on the Asia Tour in 2013, when he was just 16. Zelalem, who played 28 times in the second division of Scottish football for Rangers, believes he is good enough to play in the Premier League after his loan campaign. Speaking in his press conference before the MLS All-Star Game, Arsène Wenger echoed those sentiments, but also added a strong indication that Zelalem would go on loan, saying, "he might take a bit longer to mature because he was physically a little bit behind on body structure but I'm sure he will be a great player." The best way for Zelalem to mature physically, beyond growth spurts and gym work, is to play regularly, and ascertain the physicality of top flight, first-team football for himself.

However, if Houston makes the jump into the Power Five, that changes. And for other schools trying to poach Houston coach Tom Herman, stealing him will be much more difficult if the Coogs head to the Big 12. Ben Baby: Right now, the next A&M QB will be either Jake Hubenak or Nick Starkel. Starkel is still pretty young, while Hubenak has started before and has an incredible career arc. It's been neat to track his journey from Georgetown. As for the person to miss more, Kyle Allen seems like the one to watch with heartbreak. Allen should do well when Greg Ward Jr. leaves Houston, and it might be two years before we see what Kyler Murray brings to the table at Oklahoma. Trevor Knight, 3,000 passing

The long summer break ends today for the New York Giants as they report to the Quest Diagnostics Training Center for physicals and conditioning. It will be the first summer in 12 years without former head coach Tom Coughlin at the helm. Ben McAdoo is now the head man and he is excited to get cracking. "We started to establish our identity- without pads- but sound, smart and tough, committed to discipline and poise," McAdoo said at the end of minicamp in June. "We know what it looks like now. We had a chance to sit down, we had a chance to define it and lay the foundation for when we do get the pads on." The first training camp session will be held on Friday morning. • The Royals are trying to package Wade Davis and Ian Kennedy for some reason

Chris Sale has had an eventful week. On Monday Sale gave an interview to Scott Merkin in which he apologized to fans and teammates and explained his rationale for the uniform shredding. The Sox didn’t heed his request and Sale took issue, as many probably would, with what he felt was the business of throwback jerseys taking precedence over on-the-field stuff. Mostly having to do with the facts that (a) the Sox have people on staff who could’ve optimized his jersey any way he needed it to be optimized if he had asked; (b) ballplayers have been wearing throwbacks for a long time now and, even if they don’t like them, they tend to endure them; and (c) he’s a ballplayer who needs to suck things up sometimes like every single ballplayer ever has done.

  • 2016 BIG TEN POWER RANKINGS: I have Ohio State 3rd, and I regret it already

At the end of each conference run-through, I take a look at how I perceive the conference's balance of power heading into the season. This is in no way based on schedules, so they are not predictions. This is just how I would rank the teams after writing thousands of words about each of them. When I finished all of the Group of Five conferences, I compiled a full mid-major power rankings list. Now we're into the power conferences; here's the ACC, and here's the Pac-12. Each team's name below links to its full preview. Tier 1 1. Michigan 2. Michigan State 3. Ohio State I've gone back and forth on this constantly. As you see below, all three of these teams have low numbers in returning production.
