Christa Harmotto Biography

Unheralded in the role of middle blocker, Harmotto will be making her first Olympic appearance to cap a steady rise since joining the U.S. program in 2009. She made key contributions in helping the U.S. win its third consecutive FIVB World Grand Prix title, averaging 3.23 points, 1.31 blocks and 1.74 kills per set in 10 matches. Harmotto, who was not on the 2011 World Cup team that finished second to secure a spot in London, was the Best Blocker statistically through the preliminary rounds of the Grand Prix and easily settled into coach Hugh McCutcheon’s blocker rotation in the final round. At the club level, Harmotto has spent the past three seasons with Italian side LIU JO Volley Modena after making her professional debut with China’s Guangdong Evergrande in 2009. She was a two-time AVCA All-American and four-time All-Big Ten selection at Penn State collegiately, helping the Nittany Lions win back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008.
