Athlete Profile

  • At 2006 Olympics at Turin, Italy, finished 7th in super-G, 8th in downhill and 14th in slalom; DNF in combined and DNS first run in giant slalom; at 2002 Olympics at Salt Lake City, finished 6th in combined and 32nd in slalom; looking for a stronger showing in Vancouver after an injury hindered her in Turin in 2006; was a medal favorite coming into those Games but had a scary crash during a downhill training run and was airlifted to a hospital. Vonn, who said at the time that she thought she had broken her back and her career was over, miraculously returned and within two days was competing but did not medal; known as the most successful female ski racer in American history, Vonn is the only U.S. woman to have won two World Cup overall titles; also has two downhill titles and super-G title; only American woman to win at Italy's Trofeo Topolino (for skiers 11-14) and earn Junior Worlds medals and U.S. titles - all while a teenager; six weeks after she turned 20, produced her first World Cup victory; has more World Cup wins (30) and podium finishes (58) than any American woman; has four World Championship medals, including two golds in 2009; married to 2002 Olympian Thomas Vonn.
